Chapter 4 - 4-University

In a small bakery in the outskirts of the minor city Fluxis, Vander was staring at an oven, waiting for the perfect moment. When he noticed the perfect golden color of the bread, he pulled the bread pan out of the oven as fast as he could. He didn't use any mittens, gloves, or any equipment whatsoever. With his bare hands he placed the pan of bread on the counter hurriedly and started blowing his hands.

'Even with this [Record], the heat still hurts like a…' Before he could finish his thought, Vander's [Record of Life] updated. A white digital looking screen with a golden border, gold words and accents appeared in front of him.

"Let's go, it only took two months of burning my hands. Let's see what this bad boy can do." Deciding to check out the difference between [Heat Resistance Lv-2] and [Heat Resistance Lv-1], he put his hand back into the oven. Only five seconds in, he retracted his hand and started blowing on it again.

'It hurt only a little bit less. Instead of four seconds, I could withstand the heat for five. Man, this [Record] is really bad.' Thinking about his new leveled up [Record] he decided to check out his [Record of Life]

'[Record of Life]' Thinking about it made it instantly appear in front of him.

"Vander! Stop burning yourself, it's a big day today. Are you ready?" a woman's voice was heard in the front of the bakery.

"Yeah Mom, I just finished the last batch of bread for the day. I already have my luggage in the back of the car too." Putting the freshly baked bread into a basket, Vander replied to his mother. "Already cleaned up here, are you okay closing by yourself dad?"

"I'll be fine, but you be safe on your travels. I heard it was a long way to the University. And you protect Alice alright, she's been here helping out in the bakery ever since you started working here. She's basically already a part of the family."

"I will. Once I become an official hero, I'll be back. Love you dad."

"Love you too kiddo."

"Alright alright, let's go now, you don't want to be late picking up your girlfriend right." Vander's mom rushed him outside then said her goodbyes to her husband. "I'll be back in a couple of hours after I'm done dropping them off, bye hun."

Waving goodbye, the mother and son left the shop and headed for the car parked in front. An old but decent SUV, it seemed like it'd been used for a long time.

It's been 2 months since Vander graduated and awakened. Out of the one hundred ranked universities in the nation, Vander and Alice were only qualified to the bottom ten with their common [Record]'s. The university that was the closest one to their home, was the one they decided to enroll in. After enrolling with Alice to the 100th ranked University in the nation, it is now time to start their university life.

A five minute drive is all it took to get to Alice's apartment. Right in the slums of the city, they arrived in front of a run down building. Some of the glass windows were broken, and at least half of the bricks of the building looked cracked.

Right when the car was parked, Alice walked out of the door with luggage in hand. Getting out of the car, Vander rushed toward Alice and helped her with the luggage.

"Even though you're stronger than me right now, let me help you." Vander picked up Alice's luggage and placed them in the trunk of the car with his luggage.

Vander and Alice decided to sit in the back seats. Holding hands and talking about their future plans together.

Even though the university they picked was the closest to their home city, it still was far, about five hundred miles away. A drive that far would be too dangerous. Without the support of the city and its heroes, the only outcome would be constant monster attacks. Being recently awakened, Vander and Alice wouldn't be able to do anything if they did decide to drive.

So the next stop is the train station. It was on the other side of the city, where all the wealthy and powerful people of the city resided.

The trains in the station were made of monster material making it very durable and able to withstand a horde of common monsters, but making it very dense and heavy. To counter this, the trains were equipped with mana engines powered by mana stones. These engines boosted the speed of the train to 100 MPH. They also had official heroes stationed in the trains, protecting them if any rare monsters would attack. The station was the safest way of transportation for this minor city.

Unlike the five minute ride it was to get to Alice's house, getting across the city was another matter.

As a minor city, Fluxis wasn't that big. Being only a total of five hundred square miles. From end to end it would be around 50 miles long. That drive alone would be less than an hour.

With all the traffic, monster blockades, and redirections, the total time of the drive was doubled. From a one hour drive, to a two hour drive. This kind of traffic was a common occurrence in the city, so the couple was still thirty minutes early for their scheduled train.

Leaving the car, and grabbing their luggage, they both said their goodbyes to Vanders mother.

"Bye mom, I promise to come visit if I have time."

"Thank you Mrs. Hall for taking care of me all these years, I promise we'll come back safe and sound. Drive back safe!"

"Alright you two, don't do anything dumb. Love you guys."

Waving goodbye to the couple, Vander's mom then drove off once the lane was clear.

Seeing Vander's mom off, the couple entered the station and checked in. They entered their designated seating zone and waited for their train.

Fifteen minutes later, the train arrived. It was all black and covered in some sort of monster carapace. Each of the six coaches of the train looked like a big black beatle. There were some sort of turret on top of the first coach. Which made it look like it had horns.

Vander and Alice entered the train after showing the train guard their tickets. They found their seats and put their luggage in the compartment above them. While they were waiting for the scheduled departure, the train was getting filled to the brim.

After fifteen minutes the intercom went off.

"Next stop Moridrange University City. Please make sure you have all your belongings, we are ready to depart."
