The old camp and morgue were prime targets for surprise attacks. If you weren't careful, you could easily get caught in a massive area attack and end up as just another body on the pile. Even without big attacks, stealing corpses, information, or even bloodlines was a favorite hobby of the major hidden villages. Every village had a corpse-collecting team, and they also had teams dedicated to stealing corpses. Even a tiny piece of key info could change the course of a war. Because of this, corpse collectors didn't live long—their survival rate was terrible. Only slightly better than the poor guys fighting on the front lines. But for now, it was peacetime, and Kifune was safe. He stood in the morgue, the flickering candlelight casting creepy shadows on the walls. Thankfully, there are no ghosts in the Naruto world, he thought. Otherwise, I'd have died of a heart attack by now. But he had to admit, he was hooked on the thrill of "opening blind boxes." Looking at these cold, lifeless bodies, he felt a strange sense of familiarity. He couldn't wait to touch a few more corpses, even if they were just basic white-tier ones. But he'd used up his daily attempts. He'd have to wait until tomorrow. Grumbling, he stood up, locked the morgue with a chain as thick as his arm, and grabbed an umbrella. Time to head home! Oh, and by "home," he meant the tiny shack next door. The sun rose, and the morning mist thinned. The streets were fresh and clean after a night of rain. Maruyama Kifune stepped outside, stretched, and took a deep breath. To better guard the morgue, the orphan had moved his home nearby. To others, this seemed lonely—and for a while, he'd thought so too. But ever since the system appeared, he'd changed his mind. This isn't a morgue next door.
It's a goldmine! With light steps, he began his day the only way he knew how: by touching corpses. From a distance, he spotted two figures standing at the morgue door. Their outfits marked them as Anbu ninjas. Kifune knew all about the Anbu—the shadowy group directly under the Hokage's command, with a lot of power in Konoha. They noticed him too and stood there, staring. "Your Excellencies," Kifune greeted respectfully, walking up to them with his usual humble attitude. The two Anbu ninjas didn't waste time. In a cold, routine voice, one of them said, "This is the body of an Anbu ninja who died on a mission last night. You know what to do." Kifune nodded. Anbu ninjas were different from regular ninjas. They worked in the shadows, with no names—only code names. Their missions were their top priority. Normally, the Anbu handled their own corpses, often destroying them on the spot to prevent leaks. But since this one had been sent here, it meant all traces of their Anbu identity would be erased. Their family would be told they were just an ordinary ninja. Without another word, the two Anbu ninjas dropped a scroll and vanished. Kifune picked up the scroll, unlocked the morgue, and stepped inside. The cold air hit him like a slap, raising goosebumps all over his body. To prevent decay, the morgue was equipped with a special cooling system. He found an empty bed, unsealed the scroll, and laid out the body. It was an Anbu ninja, cleanly beheaded. "One slash... the gap in strength must've been huge," Kifune muttered, examining the corpse. Such a clean kill only happened when there was a massive difference in power. He didn't touch the corpse right away. Instead, he stood silently for a moment, then reached out and gently closed the ninja's eyes, which were still wide with horror. After putting on leather gloves, he changed the corpse into clean clothes, reattached the head, and stitched it up. The dead are sacred, he reminded himself. While he wanted the benefits the corpses offered, he wouldn't take them without giving something in return. In his mind, reshaping the corpse for burial was his contribution, and the items he received were his reward. Only this way could he take those things with a clear conscience. Even in the world of Naruto, he was a human first and a ninja second. And as a human, he had to hold onto his humanity. Endless greed would only lead him further down a dark path. It didn't take long, and it was his job anyway. Once done, he bowed to the deceased and silently apologized in his heart. The corpse had a yellow glow—no doubt, this was a Jonin. But compared to Miura Kazuo's brilliance, this one was much dimmer. Is he a weaker Jonin or a Special Jonin? He placed his hand on the glowing spot. [Yellow Corpse, Success Rate: 30%. Would you like to touch the corpse? (Attempts remaining: 3/3 today, 9/9 total)] He selected [Yes]. Perhaps because he'd treated the corpse with respect, the system rewarded him with a success on the first try. [Success! Obtained Fire Style: Great Fireball Technique Ninjutsu Card!] Ninjutsu! He recognized the B-rank ninjutsu, Great Fireball Technique. It was practical, flashy, and—most importantly—cool. [Yellow Corpse, Success Rate: 30%. Would you like to touch the corpse? (Attempts remaining: 2/3 today, 8/9 total)] No hesitation this time. [Success! Obtained the exclusive forehead protector of Konoha Special Jonin Nakano Sora!] Forehead protector? While he was happy with the 30% success rate, he couldn't help feeling a little disappointed. The third attempt, however, was a bust. [Fail!]
Overall, it wasn't a bad haul. Still, he couldn't shake the feeling that these items had a special purpose. With a thought, he pulled out the slightly worn forehead protector and examined it closely. As his vision blurred, a brief slideshow of memories played before his eyes—seen through the eyes of the Anbu ninja. "Oishi Jonin, the Land of Fire's defenses are weak. Should we...?" "Wait. Konoha's strength isn't to be underestimated." "Then what about us?" "Someone's here!" A flash of silver light, and the scene shattered like glass, dissolving into nothingness. So, it's Iwagakure. Kifune's eyes widened as the implications sank in. The Third Ninja World War was coming.
