Chapter 7 - Chapter 6:Life of a Ninja

[Fail!]

[Success! Got a standard kunai!]

[Success! Got a detonating talisman!]

[Success! Got three Bingliang Pills!]

[Fail!]

[Success! Got a random +1 upgrade card for one stat!]

Kifune used up all six chances to touch the corpse.

Sure, Bai Shi's success rate is high, but most of the stuff he gets is pretty basic.

Out of six tries, he only got one card that gave a random +1 boost to a single stat.

But hey, something's better than nothing, right?

Kifune used the card without thinking twice.

The system's spinning wheel landed on "Essence," giving his chakra a tiny boost.

After finishing his daily corpse-touching quota, he cleaned up the morgue, locked the door, and headed to the Ninja School.

He had to deliver a pair of earrings to his little sister on behalf of his older sister. Not exactly happy news, but it had to be done.

As for the info he got from the Anbu ninja's forehead protector—about Iwagakure stirring up trouble and the Third Ninja World War possibly starting anytime—he decided not to report it.

Not that he didn't care. He just didn't think it was his place as a corpse collector to worry about it.

First, how would he explain how he got the info? The Anbu had already checked the body and found nothing. If he suddenly showed up with intel, they'd probably think he was making stuff up.

Second, the Anbu ninja was there for a reason. It wasn't a coincidence. The Third Hokage, Sarutobi Hiruzen, probably sent him to investigate.

"I'm just a small-time Genin corpse collector. Let the big shots handle protecting Konoha," Kifune thought, trying to make himself feel better as he walked through the busy streets.

Konoha is the richest ninja village in the world. The streets are packed with cool shops, and everyone looks happy.

Even though war is brutal, Konoha's ninjas have made this place feel like a safe haven.

Kifune's mood lightened a bit as he soaked in the peaceful vibe.

He reached the Ninja School.

He'd spent six years here, and even though he didn't graduate at the top of his class, the security guard still recognized him.

"It's Kifune," the guard said.

Kifune gave a shy smile and scratched the back of his head. "Uncle Tianfu, you're still looking sharp!"

"Hahahaha—you bet! What brings you here, kid?"

"I need to ask Mr. Futian a few questions," Kifune said, feeling a little awkward.

Futian was his old homeroom teacher.

"Oh, got it. Go on in, but Mr. Futian might still be teaching, so don't disturb him," Uncle Tianfu said with a nod.

It wasn't unusual for graduates to come back and ask their old teachers for advice.

After graduating, students usually join a team led by a senior Chunin, Special Jonin, or even a Jonin.

The team leader guides three students for a year, called the adaptation period.

After that, students can stick with their team or leave.

Kifune wasn't the most talented, so he left to avoid holding his team back.

With his team leader's help, he got a stable job—corpse collecting.

The pay wasn't great, but it was enough to get by.

And the job was pretty safe, especially during peacetime.

Students who stayed with their teams could ask their teachers for help. For Kifune, his old teacher at the Ninja School was the next best thing.

"Okay, thanks," Kifune said, heading into the school filled with energetic kids.

Watching him go, Uncle Tianfu sighed, "He's a good kid... They're all good kids."

Using the memory from the earring, Kifune found Chana's classroom.

But the room was empty.

Probably out for an outdoor class.

"That's good. Saves us the awkward small talk," Kifune muttered to himself.

He checked the seating chart on the door and found Chana's desk.

The desk was neat and clean, but when he looked at the corner, he froze.

There were a few faint marks, barely visible but clear. The number matched exactly how many days his sister had been on her mission.

Each mark was a reminder of his sister's longing and hope for her safe return...

Kifune sighed.

"This is the life of a ninja," he thought.

He placed the beautifully wrapped gift box on the desk and turned to leave.

Instead of heading out right away, he leaned against the hallway wall.

It was a simple story, but the emotions were real.

Writer's Note:

Kifune's out here delivering earrings and uncovering war secrets like it's just another Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Ninja School's still full of kids dreaming of becoming the next Hokage. Life's weird like that.
