Cherreads

Chapter 13 - Rotten Apples(Character introductions at the end)

Yejun didn't know anyone from this selection, so he had his doubts about making friends. But as soon as he sat down, three people scooted closer—two guys and a girl. They all stared at him like they already knew who he was. Which, honestly, they probably did.

The girl spoke first. "Hey, I'm Hana. That one's Owen." She nodded toward the guy next to her. "And that one's Rae."

"We're Doyun's friends, so don't think we're creeps or something, alright?" Owen added, his tone casual but amused.

Yejun had a bad feeling about this. They were friends with Doyun? Yeah, that was already a red flag. But then again… better weird friends than no friends.

"Hm. Nice to meet you," he said, keeping it short.

Hana kept looking at him, tilting her head. "You seem like someone with regular magic… actually, no, wait." Her eyes narrowed slightly as if she were reevaluating him. "You give off that vibe, but I'm sure this selection is right for you. Trust me."

Yejun just nodded. Honestly, he agreed.

Before he could say anything else, the dining hall—previously filled with murmurs—erupted into loud cheers again. Another student was being selected.

Of course, it was light magic.

The four of them turned their heads, watching as someone stood in the selection circle. And, naturally, it was none other than Doyun, grinning like he already knew what selection he'd get. Which… yeah, he probably did.

As expected, the circle filled with black mist again. Yejun only just noticed that Doyun's uniform had changed—wait, did that mean his own had too? He glanced down, confirming it. His tie now had a black gem on it, his collar accents were black and silver, and the seams of his robe shimmered slightly with silver thread. There were probably more changes, but honestly, he didn't care much about the uniform.

Finally, Doyun walked over to their table, the cheers and claps still echoing in the background. And, of course, when he sat down, it just had to be right next to Yejun.

"There's a seat right over there. Why next to me?" Yejun muttered, his annoyance spiking.

Owen laughed. "Damn, I guess you were right, Doyun. You two really do hate each other." He glanced at Hana and Rae, and they both nodded in agreement.

The five of them sat back and observed the rest of the ceremony until it finally ended.

"Alright, that's it! Hope you all had fun," the teacher called out. "Now, let's eat!"

Before she could even finish her sentence, the entire room erupted into cheers again. Damn. People must've been starving.

In front of Yejun, plates of food appeared out of nowhere—literally anything he could ask for. Chicken? There. Pasta? There. Salads? There. His eyes widened slightly. This was way above what he usually got at home. He quickly filled up his plate, already tasting the difference between this and his usual meals.

The group started chatting while they ate. Owen and Rae were discussing the dorms, while Hana listened.

Yejun overheard and got curious. "Wait, so how do the dorms work? Are we in groups, pairs, or…?"

Hana, as always, was the first to answer. "Actually, no. Everyone gets their own separate room. It's not big, but it's comfortable."

Yejun frowned. That didn't make sense. "How? There are so many of us."

Hana smirked. "Magic, duh. Each selection has a common room—it's basically a big living room area for us to hang out in. Somewhere in it, there's a door. Say your password, and it opens to your personal room."

Yejun was still confused. "But won't people overhear my password?"

"They could, but no one cares. I've been here for a while, and no one's broken in. The worst that can happen is a friend sneaking in to prank you."

That… actually made sense.

They only realized how long they'd been talking when the teacher spoke again.

"Alright, time to head to your dorms! If you need directions, ask Jae at that table." She gestured toward a student who, as usual, had a straight, uninterested expression.

"Hm… isn't that the guy who—" Doyun started but cut himself off. "Whatever."

Hana stood up first. "New students, follow me. I know where the rooms are. When you leave the dining hall, a teacher will give you your password."

Weird. She didn't seem like the type to help teachers, but whatever.

Owen and Rae slipped away somewhere on their own. Strange. Those two always acted weird around each other.

Most students had already left, following the older students who were helping out. Now, barely anyone was left in the dining hall.

Of course, Yejun had lost track of time and was now stuck with Doyun. Great.

He started walking toward the exit before Doyun could stop him.

"Hm. Wait, Yejun," Doyun called. "Do you even know where you're going?"

…Shit. Doyun was right.

But wait—this was Doyun's first year too, so what would he know?

"Isn't it your first time here too?" Yejun shot back.

Doyun smirked. "Exactly. So I guess we'll just have to figure it out."

Yejun stared at him, completely unimpressed. "You're so stupid."

The two of them walked over to the teacher, who handed Yejun his password.

Rotten apples.

Weird.

Little did he know, Doyun had overheard it. And, of course, he didn't say anything.

Why would he?
