Chapter 19 - The Teacher Who Smile's Too Much

The rest of Monday was pretty boring, with nothing important happening. Just lectures, hall passes, and Yejun trying not to fall asleep mid-spellcasting.

Tuesday wasn't much better. The most that happened was the new schedule, he would have the same one on Thursday, but as usual there was one thing that ruined everything, having Doyun in all his classes, that guy was seriously a menace. The day came and went without anything exciting. No chaos, no monsters, no weird glowing portals. Just homework and lunch. Kinda suspicious, honestly. But whatever.

By the time Wednesday rolled around, Yejun was more than ready for something interesting, in all honesty he was hoping for something exiting to happen. He got up early, finally being able to get breakfast he grabbed a piece of toast from the dining hall, and headed to his first class of the day:

History of magic.

With Mr. Rinh.

He was kinda curious about this guy now. After what Doyun said—about his voice sounding familiar—Yejun couldn't stop thinking about it. But maybe they were just overthinking it? Mr. Rinh was probably just a normal-ass teacher. Right?

The classroom looked like an old library: big shelves full of dusty tomes, floating candles, enchanted maps pinned to the walls. Mr. Rinh stood at the front, organizing his notes, wearing that same friendly smile he always had. He looked like he belonged in one of those "mysterious but handsome professor" Pinterest boards.

"Good morning, class," he greeted, voice smooth and calm. "Today we're going to discuss the Great Divide—when the magical world officially separated from the normal world, and why that decision was made."

Yejun sat down in the second row, pulling out his notebook. He didn't usually care much about school, but something about Mr. Rinh's voice made it easy to focus. He was chill but passionate. The kind of teacher who actually made things interesting.

"Now," Mr. Rinh continued, "what do you all know about the term Enkindling?"

Hands went up. The class started participating, and Yejun just… watched. He watched Mr. Rinh glide across the room, flicking his wand to bring up floating diagrams, casually making entire historical events feel like a storytime podcast. And every time a student answered, Mr. Rinh smiled like he actually cared—even if they were wrong.

By the time the bell rang, Yejun had three pages of notes and one very unexpected opinion:

Mr. Rinh was kinda cool.

Most kids filtered out immediately, but Yejun had a free period next, and honestly? He didn't feel like leaving yet. So he stayed.

Mr. Rinh raised an eyebrow as Yejun approached.

"No class after this?"

"Nah. Free period." Yejun leaned on a desk. "Can I stay here for a bit?"

Mr. Rinh smiled again. "Of course. As long as you're quiet—or willing to help me alphabetize spellbooks."

Yejun smirked. "I'll take my chances with the quiet."

They sat in silence for a minute. Mr. Rinh scribbled something onto a scroll, and Yejun just… watched.

"Hey," Yejun said eventually, "you're, like… really good at this teaching thing."

Mr. Rinh looked up, surprised. Then smiled again—softer this time.

"Thank you, Yejun. I appreciate that."

Yejun blinked. "You know my name?"

"I know all of your names. It's part of the job."

Yejun leaned back. "You don't seem like the 'strict professor' type. You're, like, weirdly chill."

"That's not the first time I've heard that," Mr. Rinh said with a light laugh. "But I think magic should be taught with care. Not fear."

Yejun paused. "Were you always a teacher?"

Mr. Rinh hesitated for half a second. It was small—but Yejun caught it.

"Not always," he finally said. "I've had other… roles. But this is where I belong now."

Something about the way he said it felt weird. Off. Like he was choosing his words too carefully.

But then he smiled again, and Yejun forgot all about it.

"Why do you ask?"

Yejun shrugged. "Just curious. You kinda remind me of someone."

"Oh?" His tone was light, but his eyes sharpened just a little. "Who?"

Yejun stared at him. That voice. That freakin' voice.

But nah—he was probably imagining it. Right?

"No one," Yejun said, brushing it off. "Just thought you seemed familiar."

Mr. Rinh nodded slowly, eyes thoughtful. "Funny. I get that a lot."

Then he stood up and started stacking papers with graceful precision. "You're welcome to stay longer if you'd like. But I do have to prep for my next class."

Yejun stood, stretching. "Nah, I'll head out. Thanks for letting me chill here though."

"Of course." Mr. Rinh smiled, but this time it didn't reach his eyes.

Yejun didn't notice.

He walked out of the classroom, hands in his pockets, brain full of historical facts and half-formed suspicions. But every time he started to think too hard about it, he just told himself:

 "Its whatever"

Thursday came around, same schedule as Tuesday.

Yejun was already out the door. First class? Charms. Of course, he had it with Doyun. But apart from that... he also had Charms with Asher, Jae, Jia, and Sera—the whole group.

He practically burst into class, hyped to finally have everyone in one place. Sera hadn't come Tuesday 'cause she had a fever, so this was their first proper reunion.

When Yejun walked in, he immediately spotted Doyun across the room, deep in conversation with Owen. Rolling his eyes, he made his way all the way to the other side of the room. A few minutes later, Asher and Jia strolled in, spotted Yejun, and sat down beside him.

"Hey Yejun!"

"Hey Asher, hey Jia."

The three of them started chatting about their other classes, their voices bouncing around lazily until Sera and Jae showed up—bickering like always. Sera had apparently stolen Jae's book and was now playing keep-away with it, while Jae tried (and failed) to look intimidating. Eventually, they gave up the fight and joined the group.

"Hey guys," Sera said casually, tossing the book back at Jae like nothing happened.

Before anyone could reply, the door creaked open. Ms. Keira had entered.

The Charms teacher moved slowly but with a kind of quiet threat in every step. Her icy gaze scanned the room, instantly shutting people up. She didn't say a word—just waved her wand, and a thick book on her desk flipped itself open to the exact page she needed.

"Okay," she finally said, her voice sharp. "Today we're taking independent notes for the first half of class. Then you'll be testing those spells out... on each other."

Instant chaos.

Wasn't this literally the first week?

Murmurs rose around the room—half confusion, half panic. Then, as always, Damian opened his mouth. The same Damian who was basically on a first-name basis with the principal from how much he was getting sent to the office.

"Miss, how are we supposed to test spells on each other? Just like me, everyone here is stupid, we don't know shi—"

Before he could finish, his friend smacked him hard on the back and whispered, "Sit your ass down. You're on the verge of getting kicked out. First week, dumbass."

Damian blinked, looked around, and sat the hell down.

Lowkey, his friend had more authority than any teacher here.

For a few more minutes the room was filled with whispering and side-eyes, Damian looking like he still wanted to say something but thought better of it. Eventually, things chilled out.

Yejun, for one, was actually kinda excited.

Did he know what he was doing? No.

Was he probably gonna mess it up? Definitely.

But whatever. It's not like he was gonna blow something up. Probably.

He flipped open his book and scanned for a spell that looked interesting. The classroom went mostly quiet, save for the occasional page flip... and Jia and Sera launching paper airplanes across the aisle. Typical.

And of course—

Yejun could hear it. That voice.

Doyun.

From the other side of the room, Doyun and Owen were whispering... playing rock-paper-scissors-shoe like children.

Owen leaned in whispering "Whoever loses has to stand in the middle of class and... hmm... throw a book at some kid."

Yejun nearly choked on air trying not to laugh.

Owen was so stupid it was kind of impressive.

"Rock, paper, scissors, shoe!"

Doyun picked paper. Owen picked scissors.

Owen grinned. "Well, well. You go, Doyun. Good luck."

Doyun rolled his eyes. He clearly wanted to argue but knew Owen wasn't gonna let him off the hook. So, he got up, cleared his throat, snatched a book from some random kid—

"Hey—"

"Sorry!"

—and threw it. A little too hard.

The book hit the kid square in the back. The whole class gasped.

"DOYUN! Get out of my class! Now!"

Doyun didn't argue, he knew there was no way out of it, I mean at least its not the office. Doyun then just smirked and walked out, casual as ever.

Yejun watched him leave, lips twitching. That same cocky smirk, always.

Asher nudged his arm. "See? What'd I say? That guy's suspicious as hell."

Jae raised an eyebrow. "Asher, shut up or you'll be the next one getting a book thrown at you."
