Chapter 12 - The Selections Ceremony

Finally, the carriages had stopped. They had made a few stops before this—some to eat, others for breaks—and the last one to change into uniforms. For the first time, Yejun had dressed formally. No, literally, it was the first time. The most he had ever worn were a new pair of jeans, so the school uniform felt quite uncomfortable. It was a white, long-sleeved button-up dress shirt, black pants, a vest, a tie, and, to top it all off, a long robe. There were a lot of accessories and extra details, too. For example, the shirts had accents on the collars, and the robes were grey inside with golden stitching where the seams were. Students who had been here the year before had different colors—like, for instance, the ties could be a different color, or the vests were checkered in the magical selection's color.

The female uniform wasn't too different—almost the same thing, except with a skirt instead of pants and a ribbon instead of a tie. The vests were also longer.

In Yejun's carriage, the five of them were getting out since they had stopped, but in Doyun's carriage, everyone had fallen asleep except Doyun. Worst decision to stay asleep when he was awake. Since no one was waking up, he pulled out the offensive, screaming, "Wake up, fatasses~ lovingly, of course."

Immediately, Owen, who was lying on Rae's lap, sleeping the whole time, jumped up, and Rae, who probably felt the movement, also woke up. Hana was no exception to Doyun's torturous screams. The four of them slowly walked out, still sleepy, glaring at Doyun as if they wanted to kill him. But, of course, Doyun was just smiling, moving his head around as if searching for someone... oh, just who might that be?

Owen and Rae were staring at each other. How awkward. But in Yejun's carriage, everyone was as lively as usual—there were only three of them currently, though. Jae, who had been called out by a teacher to help start the ceremony for new students, had left just a little while ago. Jia had also left because it turned out she was an athlete, just like Yejun thought—specifically, a dancer—and she wanted to practice, so she asked a teacher if she could step out. Smart move, to be honest.

Now, Yejun, Asher, and Sera were all talking about the selections, since it wasn't only Yejun's first year but also Asher's. The two were pretty nervous, guessing which selection they'd get. Sera was just watching from the side, smiling to herself.

"You guys are so stupid," she said, grinning. "It's kinda obvious which house you'll get. You, Asher, yeah, you." Asher looked around as if there was another Asher. "Oh, oh, me?"

Sera just kept looking at the two of them. "I think Asher… hmm, I feel like most expect you to get light magic, but I don't think you will. You're just too stupid to only do good stuff. You'd burn someone's house down before you could save them."

Yejun had to hold in a laugh. He couldn't let Asher know he actually agreed with Sera.

"And you, Yejun… uh, I'm not sure which house you might get. I mean, not light magic, for sure. I feel like you might get regular magic, but you really seem like a person with a dark magic aura. Besides, your dad did dark magic. Maybe you'll get it from him?"

Yejun nodded. "Yeah, maybe. I just hope I get into a house with you guys."

Sera smiled. "Me too. I'm in regular, by the way."

"I could tell."

Sera couldn't tell if that was a good thing or not, so she just shrugged.

Suddenly, they heard a loud voice, one that seemed like a strong, buff, scary dude by the tone, so Yejun stood up on his tiptoes, looking up. But when he saw who it was, he was shocked. It was a short, old lady with a microphone.

"Okay, welcome kids, or welcome back if you've been here before." She coughed a few times before continuing, "Excuse me, anyway, new students, go right. People who've been here before, go left. There'll be a teacher to escort you. Follow them, they'll lead you to the school. The walk is around two minutes, so don't complain. You know who you are." She then searched for someone in the crowd before her gaze landed on a guy who had his hands in his pockets, whistling as if he didn't know what she was talking about.

Yejun didn't know who that was, but it was Owen, for your knowledge. Of course, it was.

The lady finished speaking, put the microphone down, and Sera quickly said goodbye to Asher and Yejun before running to her line. Waiting for her there were Jae and Jia. Asher and Yejun slowly walked to their line. Since the two were walking slowly, they lost each other and were now on their own. Asher scrambled through the crowd for a few minutes until he gave up and just put his head down, walking.

Unlike Asher, Yejun wasn't alone now. Of course, he just happened to bump into the bitch. And of course, the "bitch" in question was Doyun.

Doyun smirked at Yejun. "Well, I guess we see each other again!"

Then he smiled and put a hand over Yejun's shoulder.

"Sadly, yes," Yejun muttered.

Doyun ignored him. "Hm, I wonder which house you'll get into. Probably dark magic, right?"

Yejun looked at Doyun. "I don't know?"

The two kept walking for a while, following the teacher, before they got to the school.

The school… it was enormous. It was a gigantic, castle-like structure with towers scattered across the roof, windows all over, and a big metal gate with golden parts in front of it. The teacher leading them mumbled a spell, and the gate opened. Everyone rushed in. Yejun's eyes gleamed with excitement. Was this where he was going to learn? Awesome!

Doyun, who usually seemed unimpressed, couldn't quite hide his expression now. It seemed like he was also surprised by the school.

The crowd of students quickly ran into the building, obviously excited to see the inside. As they walked in, they noticed the cold brick walls. Instead of lamps, there were torches and candles, giving the school an orange-yellowish glow, making it seem even creepier. But it didn't actually seem scary. Instead, it felt comforting.

The teacher led the amused crowd of students to a big wooden door. It was already wide open, and inside was what seemed like a lunchroom. The lighting was the same, but there was more of it now. Over the room were three giant tables with students already sitting at them. It seemed that each selection probably had its own table.

As the teacher led them to the front of the dining room, Yejun spotted his friends. They all smiled at him, with surprisingly, of all people, Jae wishing him "good luck" and patting his back. For some reason, it seemed like Doyun didn't like the guy. He started to ask Yejun all types of questions about who Jae was.

"Who was that guy? He seemed annoying."

He was going to add another comment but then a teacher spoke up.

The teacher sat in the front. He was an old man, and his sweet voice filled the room.

"Hello, students. Whether you're new or not, I hope you enjoy this year and learn a lot. You can call me 'Sir.' I prefer going without my name, but if you do want to call me something, just call me Mr. Director or whatever. Anyways, new students, obviously you should know this is a magic school, that's first, but second of all, as you've probably heard from others, there are selections in this school: light magic, regular, and dark. You will get a selection chosen by standing in that area"

The director then pointed at a circle in front of them with his wand and continued, "And there will appear a color. Light will be white, regular will be red, and dark will be black. Alright, now, let's begin. Good luck!"

Everyone started clapping.

The short teacher from before, who had given a speech outside next to the carriage, was now here again. In her hands, she had a long piece of paper with writing on it. On it were names.

"Alright, I'll call your name, and you'll step into the circle. The order is random, and don't complain about which selection you get."

She then started reading.

"First is… Nari S.!"

A short but confident-looking girl stepped into the circle. After a while, an aura appeared around it, red, which meant regular. The teacher pointed at the table she would go to, and the people at the table clapped and welcomed her.

"Amaris A!"

Then another girl stepped into the circle. This time, it lit up white, meaning light magic. The teacher pointed at another table.

A few more names went by, and Doyun, who had been quiet, now spoke up.

"Hey, Yejun, noticed how no one's gotten dark magic yet?"

Oh wait… Doyun was right? Not a single person had yet. But just as they said that, a guy got called up.

"Ciarain B."

The guy looked scary and intimidating, and then the circle lit up black. Doyun sighed.

"C'mon… I wanted to be the first one with dark. Ugh."

A few more names went by until one that Yejun recognized came up.

"Asher G!"

As Asher stepped into the circle, he noticed Yejun and immediately smiled, waving to him. Yejun waved back, mouthing out a 'good luck!'

Doyun seemed to notice this.

"Damn, you actually have friends?"

But Yejun ignored it as he noticed Asher got regular. Not a big surprise, he expected it. Asher walked over to his table with clapping echoing through the room.

A few more names went by until… all of a sudden his name came up, he should have expected this, but for some reason it still caught him off gaurd.

"Yejun S!"

Yejun's hands were sweaty and shaking. Why was he so scared? Just as he thought, when he stepped into the circle, a few gasps came from the crowd. Probably just people noticing him. It felt weird to be the one in the circle instead of watching people in it.Suddenly, the circle started flickering, dissapearing and appearing, switching through colors the selections didnt even have, then the familiar buzzing came back, Yejun froze, he looked around the crowd looking for a reaction, for someone to notice it, but it seemed like he was the only one who saw it, suddenlt the buzzing stopped and the circle came back. once it was activated, a familiar black aura filled the space.

Yejun blinked. Was this really happening?

The teacher nodded with a soft and gentle almost reassuring smile, pointing at the table where all of his selection sat.

Yejun walked to the table with mixed feelings. People clapped for him, but he was thinking... Did this mean it was the start of his real adventure?
