Cherreads

Chapter 9 - Next morning

Yejun had been expecting to wake up to water splashed in his face—or something even worse—but instead, he was jolted awake by classical music blasting at full volume. And not just any classical music, but the old, creaky kind that made his ears bleed.

Wasn't this the same guy who told him to keep it down yesterday?

With a groan, Yejun forced his eyes open, glaring at Doyun. "Mind turning that shit off? I'm trying to sleep."

Doyun just smiled, insincere as always. "What do you mean, Yejun? This is just my usual morning routine."

Yejun sat up fully now, rubbing his temples. "What, waking me up in a new annoying way every time?"

Doyun tilted his head, feigning innocence. "Wow, why would I do that? Could never be me."

Yejun rolled his eyes and dug through his suitcase for a new outfit. Since the ride was going to be long, he figured he'd dress comfortably. Well, he always did, anyway. Today's outfit: jean Bermuda shorts, a black and gray striped long-sleeved shirt, and a simple light gray t-shirt over it.

As he glanced in the mirror, checking his outfit, he caught sight of Doyun in the corner of his eye. As always, the guy was overdressed. White long-sleeved shirt, gray vest, black pants with a belt, a black trench coat, and—of course—a black tie.

Yejun scoffed as he walked past him. "Why are you always so overdressed?"

Doyun sighed, adjusting his tie. "First off, you dress like you're homeless. Second, it's the first day of school, so I should dress appropriately."

Yejun squinted at him. "No, I just dress normally."

Doyun raised an eyebrow. "Not in this world. I'm sure you've noticed how everyone else dresses."

Yejun didn't get the chance to argue because just as he was about to step out of the room, Chandra appeared at the doorway, smiling as wide as ever.

"Good morning!"

She paused for a moment before her face turned slightly more serious. "Doyun, Yejun, I need to talk to you two before you leave today."

Yejun's mind went blank. What now?

He was about to walk out, thinking they'd head to her office again, but Chandra waved a hand. "No, no, we can talk here. I don't feel like going up and down those staircases again."

For once, Yejun agreed with her. He plopped onto the bed while Chandra pulled a chair closer.

"Okay, Yejun, first off, I really hope you're starting to believe in magic, because school won't be easy if you keep thinking it's fake."

Yejun followed her gaze out the window. Only then did he realize it wasn't actually morning anymore—had he really woken up late again?

"Well, aside from that," Chandra continued, "there's something else I need to tell you both."

Doyun, who had been idly fidgeting with the blanket's corner, finally looked up.

"I already told you most of it on the first day—about your dad and all—but there's a little more. First off, don't be surprised when people recognize you, Yejun. Your dad was a well-known wizard in this world, and as for you, Doyun, it's just your family name."

Then, her expression darkened slightly.

"Guys, seriously. Stay safe. The school should be secure, but… we still don't know who's after you."

She stood up, pushing the chair back into place. "Alright, we should get going. You woke up pretty late, so we're behind schedule."

Yejun grabbed his suitcase, and as he did, his eyes landed on Doyun's luggage. He snorted. No way he could ignore that—it was way too fancy.

The three of them headed downstairs and stepped outside when Chandra suddenly gasped. "Oh! Yejun, I almost forgot something."

She rushed back inside and returned moments later with a small bag. "I went to the bank while you two were still sleeping and checked your balance. This is the currency used here. If you need help figuring it out, ask Doyun later."

Doyun sighed. "Why me?"

Chandra ignored him. "Alright, let's go."

The three of them stood at the sidewalk, waiting.

"…Uh, why aren't we walking anywhere?" Yejun asked.

Doyun gave him a deadpan look. "Are you stupid? We're waiting for a taxi. We need to get out of the city before we can teleport."

Yejun blinked. There were cars in this world? Huh.

His fingers idly slipped into his pocket, feeling for the wand that Chandra always insisted he carry. It still felt unnatural having to bring it everywhere. He was usually used to carrying his phone everywhere so now that it had switched to a wand it just didnt sit right with him.

Before he even realized it, they were already in a taxi, and before he could process that, they were already getting out.

The air was humid but not hot. They stood in an open field, soft grass brushing against their shoes, scattered wildflowers swaying in the gentle breeze. The sun was already beginning to set, streaking the sky in warm hues of pink and orange.

It was… nice.

Suddenly, Chandra pulled out a mirror. "Alright, grab the handle. This is the standard teleportation method. You need either a mirror or a reflective body of water to travel."

Yejun looked at her, then at Doyun, whose unimpressed expression made it very clear that he was used to this.

"Alright, I'll count to three," Chandra said. "Be careful. I don't want half of you to end up here while the other half lands in another country."

"…Wait, that can actually happen—?"

"Three… two… one!"

Chandra muttered something under her breath—a spell, most likely—and suddenly, the world started spinning. Colors blurred together like a whirlwind, distorting everything around them.

And then— boom.

They had teleported. Well that was what it was most likely.
