Chapter 10 - Star Sapphire

(Hal POV)

I am flying through the air, enjoying the speed and view from up here, as it is a sign of my freedom. Just thinking about my past life makes me sad, and here I am, free to imagine anything I want and help other people who might be in a similar situation as I used to be. I have improved again. I don't know what it is, but after spending a lot of time in Gotham, helping Batman with the War of Jokes and Riddles, I felt like something was ... changing. I enjoyed myself, true, but when Batman wanted me to leave, I just couldn't. Gotham was a terrible place to be, and I wanted to change that. I didn't want to have access to these powers without using them to improve the lives of others. So I simply hid in the sky and waited for Batman to leave and then resumed my work. I can't describe the amount of satisfaction I felt when a small girl embraced me after I saved her and her family... This might sound cringy and clichéd, but it's true. Since then, there has been no way back for me.

I continued my work in Gotham and managed to push back that darkness and hopelessness a bit. I think I saw some of them smile, but it may have been a fluke. Taking care of the villains in Gotham wasn't that hard, honestly. I suppose they were meant to be handled by a Bat with no powers, so it made sense. And yet, I enjoyed myself. It was good to have made a change by rebuilding the houses and homes of the people, helping administer first aid, and, after getting the hang of it, healing the wounded, stopping crime and imprisoning those who were responsible for it. While he wouldn't admit it, I know that Batman was thankful for my help, especially for stopping him from crossing the line. I don't know what made me take the knife instead; I just didn't want for him to be haunted by this experience as he might have been in canon.

[Crime alert. Police radio reports a bank robbery two blocks down.]

"Then let's stop a heist, shall we?"

I dive down and look into the bank, checking for heat signatures and other potential threats, like a bomb. I check the different electromagnetic pulses and find no bombs or explosives in the building or strapped to the robbers themselves. I see six individuals using semi-automatic guns and wearing masks. The civilians are lying on the ground with their hands behind their backs. I quickly check the location of all the robbers. Show time.

"You do what we say, and no one will get hurt."

"Let's move it, man! We've been here too long already!"

"I'm not givng you a choice! You either open the vault, or I start killing the people here. Your choice," the leader threatens the manager of the bank with his gun. The manager has lost all his strength and has wet himself, unable to do what the robber says.

"Just leave it! We have no more time, let's-"

"You know something, my friends? ... I'd love to be able to come up with a clever catchphrase right about now."

"What the f-"

"Green Lantern! Kill him!"

*BANG BANG BOOM*

All of them shoot at me. I check that no one else is in immediate danger and then nod my head. The bullets shoot towards me and then get slower and slower until they stand still right in front of me.

"Heh, I feel like Neo right now."

"What the..."

"What is he?"

"He's Green Lantern; I already said so!"

"Use the grenade ... lau-ncher!"

"Wha- ... what's ... happ--"

"Can't ... bre-athe ..."

I increased the air density to roughly three times normal above the waist in the entire room. And the destiny in front of me is to be far higher, stopping the bullets and making it hard for these gentlemen to breathe right now. I hold out my hand, and all of their weapons fly towards me. I crush the weapons into neat little squares and watch as they fall unconscious. Now that I'm finished, I remove the effect on the air and turn it back to normal.

"Everything is over; you can stand up again," I say, and help the people back on their feet.

"Thank you ... thank you very much."

"My pleasure."

I take flight after handing the prisoners over to the police. That was fun to do. I try to be as creative and imaginative as possible when handling such situations. Before doing that, I experiment first, of course. The Ring is very helpful in that regard since Batman has refused to answer my calls. I gave him a phone, but he hasn't called or answered my calls either. Quite a hard nut to crack. But I'll get through to him eventually. That man can use a friend, that's for sure. All those experiences have to leave some trauma. I might be the only one capable of handling that.

"Ugh!"

A sudden headache assaults my senses as something changes. I have never felt anything like that.

[Energy detected. Origin: Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum.]

"What type?"

[Type: ... ... Love]

"Love? Wait, that means-"

*WOOOOOOSH*

A pink figure wearing a pink outfit shoots past me and smiles as she does so. Oh no.

- A few hours earlier -

(Caroll Ferris POV)

As I open my eyes, a terrible headache assaults me. Where am I?

"Do not fear! All will be explained, your highness!" I hear a loud voice and see two ... women? Aliens? What is this?

"Wh-what did you call me--?!"

"Your Highness."

"You are our Queen."

"We are here on your world under an invisibility screen! We come from the planet Zamaron which, in our language, means lando fo lovely women! We came here to find you!"

"I-I don't understand."

"Then let me explain it to you, my Queen. Billions of years ago, we left our mates and became known as Zamarons. We have evolved since we no longer reproduced in different forms. We have developed a warrior-like culture and prefer to focus on developing our physical abilities over our mental ones. We have developed a method of storing our psionic energies into crystals. Over the years, we have developed a custom of choosing a female that bears some of the most beautiful appearance and name her our Queen. This person becomes Star Sapphire.' Additionally, our queen is armed with the gem, which harnesses the Emotional Spectrum of Love. Only someone who is capable of great love can ever use this power, and you, Carol Ferris of Earth, have been chosen."

"So I am the only mortal among the Zamaron? Since you are all immortal."

"That is correct. By tradition, the Queen is always mortal! And her successor has to be the exact duplicate in appearance and capable of great love. We have searched through the galaxy to find you."

"We must at once return to Zamaron where you will be crowned - Queen Star Sapphire!"

"What? You mean - leave Earth!? But I can't do that!"

"Why is that, your Highness?"

"Well ... there are things I still have to do, responsibilities. I have Ferris Air to run and ... well..." I tell them.

"Then it is because of a man-creature that you do not wish to come with us?"

"Is that true, your Highness? Do you admire one of them?"

"I admit that there is someone who I admire, but I wouldn't call it love or anything. He calls himself Green Lantern."

"A Lantern? Of all things, a Lantern. As our future Queen, you must be made to realise, Highness, how far superior even the lowest Zamaron is to any male - no matter who he is! Since it is clear to us now that you will never accept our offer as your heart still lies here, we propose something. It is true that Lanterns hold considerable power of the Green Emotional Spectrum of Will, but we will show you just how weak he is when compared to Zamarons. And you will prove it to yourself!"

"Weak? And how would you prove this?"

"Let us demonstrate."

A hatch opens up, and from it, a shining pink gem appears. It floats in the air and then slowly approaches me. In a heartbeat, it disappears into my navel, and I feel a tremendous rush of energy

*WOOOOOSH*

My attire changes into a pink one. It is made of energy, similar to how Green Lantern looks, but more ... sensual.

"What happened?" I ask.

"You have been bestowed with the powers of the Star Sapphire. You are now capable of wielding the Emotional Spectrum of Love to fight. With it, you will fight Green Lantern and realise just how inferior he truly is. Good Luck, your Highness."

For some reason, I cannot help but do as they say. I feel compelled to seek out Green Lantern and challenge him. To fight him and prove that I am stronger than he is. I soar into the sky and shoot forward, filled with this new power.

(3rd Person POV)

"Green Lantern, I challenge you!" Star Sapphire shouts and attacks Hal with a beam of power.

*BOOOOOM*

The beam hits Hal with tremendous repelling force, and he is shot through the air. However, before he crashes into the buildings below, he wills himself to phase through everything. His body phases through the buildings and the people living there without harming anyone. Adrenaline flushes his system as he realises that he is facing another Lantern, another user of the Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum. He stops himself and zooms forward, flashing through the sky and meeting Star Sapphire before she can leave.

"Where are you going?"

Hal creates a classic cage and imprisons her inside it. But he is surprised when, in the next moment, she is no longer inside the cage but outside it.

"What the-"

"It's possible to teleport a living person as easily as any object, Green Lantern! You should know that!"

She tells him and attacks him again. Several tendrils of pink energy attack Hal as he comes to the understanding that a complete amateur just teleported as if it were nothing. He dodges the tendrils easily but is surprised again when the tendrils change shape and split into hundreds of spears that shoot in his direction. Hal thinks fast and quickly creates a large platform above the houses below to protect them from the fight. He takes the spears head on.

*SHING BOOOOOM*

His armour holds, and he hits the barrier he just created. Just before he crashes into he barrier, he sees Star Sapphire coming after him with another spear in her hands. Hal alters the properties of the barrier, transforming it into bungee gum, as he often does. He has realised the potential and various applications it has. The barier bends and then sends him back with equal force. Hal accelerates and appears before Star Sapphire. A gauntlet appeared on his hand, and he punched out. His fist meets the surprised Star Sapphire's face and shoots her back. But Hal doesn't stop; he creates several rockets in the air and has them lock on Star Sapphire.

*WOOOSH* x10

Star Sapphire recovers in time and creates two shields. In each hand one. But she doesn't stop there. She adds spikes at the edge and starts to make them spin rapidly. Then, the first rocket impacts her shields.

*BOOOOM*

The shield breaks, and she realises that these rockets are far stronger than she can protect herself from. She takes flight and dodges the rockets, which have changed direction and are following her. Seeing them following her, Star Sapphire changes her tactic. She pointed her fingers at the missiles and sent out several beams of powerful energy, cutting them apart and making them explode. She doesn't stop, though, and fires another powerful beam of energy at Hal and the surroundings. She is angry and has had enough. The beams of pink energy impact Hal and the green shield he created to protect the civilians below. Star Sapphire shoots forward, through the smoke, but as she does, she is welcomed with something she didn't expect.

Hal had used all of her attacks and turned them back into energy. He absorbed that energy and transferred it through his armour. While that was happening, his armour added an extension. A cable with a gun. All of the energy he absorbed flowed into the gun, and he pointed it forward. In the moment that Star Sapphire broke through the smoke, he has it pointed in her direction, welcoming her with the barrel of the weapon.

Her eyes widened.

"That was impressive, Miss."

And then he pulls the trigger.
