Zi Ning's vision was blurry, but she forced herself to stay awake. Pain throbbed through her body, but she ignored it. The figure in black had vanished, leaving her alone in the wrecked car.

Her heart pounded. This wasn't just a warning. Whoever was behind this wanted her dead.

She fumbled for her phone, but her fingers trembled too much. Before she could unlock it, headlights flashed in her rearview mirror. A black car was speeding toward her.

Zi Ning's instincts screamed.

She unbuckled her seatbelt and threw open the door, stumbling out onto the cold pavement. A second later, the black car smashed into hers, sending sparks flying.

If she had stayed inside even a moment longer, she would have been crushed.

Ignoring the pain, she forced herself to move. The other car's engine revved. They weren't done.

Zi Ning ran.

The street was empty, the buildings dark. There was no one to call for help. The black car sped after her, its tires screeching against the road.

Zi Ning's breath was ragged. Her legs burned. But she couldn't stop. If she did, she was dead.

The car gained on her. The driver wasn't hesitating anymore.

Just as the car was about to hit her, Zi Ning dove into a narrow alley. The car couldn't fit. Its brakes screamed as it stopped at the entrance.

Zi Ning didn't slow down. She sprinted through the alley, her heart slamming against her ribs.

She had to get to safety.

She had to survive.

She reached the end of the alley and burst onto a main road. The sudden streetlights stung her eyes.

A few cars passed, their drivers unaware of the danger she was in.

Zi Ning didn't have time to stop. She looked over her shoulder.

The black car had turned around, searching for another way to cut her off.

She hailed a taxi. The driver, an old man, glanced at her messy state but didn't ask questions.

"Where to?" he asked.

"Anywhere crowded," she gasped. "Just drive."

The taxi pulled onto the road, speeding away. Zi Ning pressed her back against the seat, her breath still shaky.

Her hands clenched into fists.

This wasn't random.

Someone had sabotaged her brakes. Someone had sent that car after her.

And she knew exactly why.

She pulled out her phone and called Lu Yichen.

He answered immediately.

"Where are you?" His voice was sharp, urgent.

"I was attacked." Her voice was steady, but she was still shaken. "They tried to run me off the road."

Silence. Then, Lu Yichen's voice turned cold.

"Where are you now?"

"In a taxi. Heading downtown."

"Don't go home. Meet me at the Grand Imperial Hotel."

Zi Ning didn't argue.

She gave the new address to the driver and leaned back. Her mind was racing.

Someone had made their move tonight.

They wanted her gone.

But they had underestimated her.

She wasn't going to let them win.

When Zi Ning arrived at the Grand Imperial Hotel, Lu Yichen was already waiting in the lobby.

He took one look at her and his expression darkened. "You're hurt."

Zi Ning shook her head. "I'm fine."

Lu Yichen didn't believe her. He grabbed her wrist and pulled her into the elevator. His grip was tight, protective.

The doors closed, and he pressed the button for the top floor.

The moment they were alone, he turned to her.

"Tell me everything."

Zi Ning exhaled. "My brakes were tampered with. Someone tried to run me off the road. After the crash, a man in black warned me to stop looking into Wang Xue's case. Then, they tried to kill me again."

Lu Yichen's expression was terrifyingly calm.

"They're getting desperate."

Zi Ning met his gaze. "That means we're close to the truth."

The elevator doors opened. Lu Yichen led her into the penthouse suite. He pulled out his phone and made a call.

"Find out who was behind tonight's attack. Check every traffic camera, every suspicious movement near Zi Ning's car."

He hung up and turned back to her. "Until we know who they are, you're staying here."

Zi Ning didn't argue. She knew it was too dangerous to go home.

Lu Yichen took a step closer. His eyes softened.

"I should've been there."

Zi Ning shook her head. "You couldn't have known."

His jaw tightened. "That doesn't matter. From now on, I won't let them touch you."

His words carried a silent promise.

Zi Ning's heart skipped a beat, but she pushed it aside. Now wasn't the time.

She had a target on her back.

And she needed to find out who put it there.

The next morning, Lu Yichen's men gathered all the evidence.

Security footage showed a black sedan with fake plates. The driver wore a mask, making identification impossible.

But there was one thing they didn't expect.

A second car was seen at the scene—watching, but never interfering.

It didn't belong to the attackers.

It belonged to Jiang Yue.

Zi Ning's eyes narrowed.

The journalist?

What was she doing there?

Was she investigating?

Or was she involved?

Zi Ning's phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

Be careful who you trust. Some people are not what they seem.

Zi Ning stared at the screen.

Her mind raced.

Was this a warning? A threat?

One thing was clear.

Someone was playing a dangerous game.

And she was right in the middle of it.
