Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

The laboratory was unusually free on a cold Thursday morning, even though it was uncommon for there to be less workload during a workday. Upon arriving that morning, Sienna discovered that the laboratory was not in a rush. She stepped inside, the cool air inside greeting her like a second skin, the usual hustle of the day missing from the sterile walls of the building.

"Good morning," she greeted her coworkers, offering the same polite smile she had perfected over the years. Her voice had an easy cadence as she glanced around. "No newbies today?" she asked, pushing her long coat off her shoulders, her eyes scanning the room with casual curiosity.

Hannah, her closest coworker and longtime accomplice, exhaled sharply, looking somewhat relieved. "None," she replied, leaning against the counter, her arms crossed as she looked at Sienna with a wry smile.

Sienna stretched her arms, a sigh escaping her lips. "It's nice not to have any work to do this morning; I feel so exhausted," she said, her voice betraying the fatigue she usually hid under her cheerful demeanor. The long hours and ever-growing responsibilities had taken a toll on her lately, and even though there was always more work to do, a brief reprieve felt like a small victory.

Her words were barely out of her mouth when the emergency door at the far end of the lab exploded open, sending a wave of tension through the room. The abrupt sound of hurried footsteps echoed in the hallways, and the air seemed to shift as an unsettling energy flooded in. Sienna's heartbeat quickened as she turned toward the commotion. A man was being wheeled into the laboratory, his face pale, unconscious, and barely clinging to life. His presence was accompanied by two figures dressed in immaculate suits that practically screamed wealth—Sterling & Co.'s CEO and his wife, leaders of the Country Cs Women Association. Both had the kind of refined elegance that made them stand out in any crowd.

It was clear to Sienna that this wasn't just another emergency; this was a crisis. The air in the room grew heavier, the usual bustle momentarily silenced by the intrusion of the powerful couple. The CEO's expression was hard, eyes flashing with concern. His wife, however, looked far more discomposed, her movements shaky as she clung to his side. Their presence alone screamed wealth and influence, yet there was something else in their demeanor—a frantic desperation that was hard to ignore.

As they rushed past her, Sienna's pulse quickened. She recognized the person in the wheelchair immediately. Alexander Miller, the youngest of the prestigious Miller family, was a name that commanded attention in both social and academic circles. He had a reputation for brilliance—a genius by anyone's standards—and his rapid rise through the elite private university had solidified his place as one of the most talked-about figures of his generation. He was a legend in the making.

The moment the Millers entered, Sienna knew that she was about to deal with a situation far more complicated than her usual day-to-day tasks. The Millers were known for their privacy. Their lives were shrouded in secrecy, their wealth and influence something to be protected at all costs. But seeing them here, in the lab, at this hour, spoke volumes about how dire the situation must be.

"Get him stabilized. Now," the head scientist, Mr. Atlas, ordered, snapping Sienna out of her reverie. His sharp command cut through the tension, pulling her into action.

Her mind raced as she hurried to the sterile room where Alexander was being prepped. The moment she entered, the severity of the situation hit her. His vital signs were dangerously low—his heart rate faint, blood pressure barely there, and his body cold. The sterile scent of the lab mixed with the metallic tang of blood in the air. She had dealt with her fair share of emergencies, but something about this—about Alexander—felt different. The magnitude of his family's status, the secrets surrounding him, and now, the state of his health—it all felt like too much for her to handle.

But this was her job. She had trained for moments like this, even if her nerves were now running wild beneath her calm exterior. She moved quickly, efficiently, methodically—stopping only to ensure that every procedure was followed precisely. Sweat beaded on her forehead as she worked to stabilize him, her hands shaking slightly as she adjusted the IV and checked the monitors. Her heart raced with every passing minute. It wasn't just her training at stake here. This was her first real test, her moment to prove herself.

As she worked, she could feel her nerves rising with every beat of Alexander's weakening heart. But she refused to give up on him. Not now. Not after everything she had seen and heard about him. His story was a complicated one, and as a scientist, she couldn't help but feel a strange sense of empathy for the young man lying in front of her. The cold, calculated genius that everyone admired now lay on the edge of death, and she was the one who held his fate in her hands.

An hour passed before she finally stepped out of the sterile room, drenched in sweat, her body trembling with exhaustion. She had managed to stabilize his condition, but it was only temporary. His heart was weak, and although she had bought him some time, it could stop again at any moment. His situation was far from stable. He was in a coma, and the road to recovery would be long, if he even recovered at all.

As Sienna emerged from the room, she was greeted by the anxious stares of Mr. and Mrs. Miller. Their expressions were a mix of hope, fear, and uncertainty. Mrs. Miller's eyes were wide with worry, her hands clasped tightly in front of her as she approached Sienna.

"How is he doing?" Mrs. Miller asked, her voice trembling with an anxiety Sienna hadn't expected to hear from someone so poised.

Sienna lowered her gaze for a moment, taking a breath before speaking. "Well, he's no longer close to death, but he's still in a critical condition. His heart is weak. It could stop at any time. It's best if he stays here for now, so we can monitor him closely."

Mrs. Miller's face softened for a brief moment, a flicker of relief passing through her eyes. But it was short-lived, and soon, the anxiety returned.

Mr. Miller spoke then, his voice firm and unyielding. "We cannot allow him to stay here."

Sienna felt a frown tug at the corner of her lips. "Why is that?" she asked, a note of confusion creeping into her voice.

Mr. Miller hesitated, his jaw tightening before he spoke again. "We've already gone public with a story about his whereabouts. Last week, we held a press conference. The media has been asking questions about him—about his disappearance. So, we told them he was recovering from an injury at home, that it wasn't life-threatening. Now that we've found him, we can't let the truth come out. It could ruin everything."

Sienna felt a pang of frustration, her pulse quickening. She had seen this kind of thing before—the lengths people would go to protect their image, to control the narrative. But this wasn't just about their reputation anymore. A life was at stake.

"And you want me to... what?" Sienna's voice faltered as she tried to understand what they were asking of her. "You want to move him? Put him somewhere else?"

"Yes," Mr. Miller said, his voice softening. "We can create a sterile room at our estate, and we need someone to stay with him. We need someone who can monitor him around the clock, someone we trust."

Sienna blinked, the absurdity of the request hitting her in waves. "A live-in doctor?" she repeated, disbelief creeping into her voice. "Why can't you just let us keep him here where we have the proper equipment?"

Mr. Miller's gaze turned cold, calculating. "The rumors surrounding our family are already out of control. We need to keep things quiet, to protect his privacy—and ours."

Sienna's chest tightened. This wasn't just about medical care anymore. It was about secrecy, about maintaining control over an image. And she wasn't sure how much of herself she was willing to sacrifice for that.

"I'm not a doctor," she replied, her voice tight with frustration. "I'm a scientist. There are others who are more qualified. Why me?"

Mr. Atlas, the head scientist, interjected, his voice low but authoritative. "Do you understand the gravity of the situation here? This family needs someone they can trust—someone who can maintain discretion. You have the skills, Sienna. You can handle this. And as for your position here, don't worry. The Millers will compensate you generously. Once Alexander is well, you'll return to your role here, exactly as you left it."

Sienna stared at him, her mind racing. She wasn't sure if it was the prospect of more money, the pressure to prove herself, or the strange connection she felt to Alexander, but something inside her shifted.

After a long silence, she nodded. "Okay. I'll do it."

Mr. Atlas gave her a satisfied smile. "Good. I knew you'd make the right choice."

As she left the office, the weight of her decision pressed down on her. She was about to step into a world of secrecy and luxury, a world where nothing was as it seemed. But even as she walked away, one thought kept nagging at her—what exactly was she getting herself into?

That evening, as she entered her apartment, Sienna felt the weight of the day settle in. She kicked off her shoes and sank into the couch, her mind racing with what lay ahead. There was a world of unknowns waiting for her, and she had no idea where it would lead.

But one thing was certain: her life had just changed forever.
