Chapter 16 - Chase the Black-Masked Man

Following the instructions that Nicholas gave him over the phone, Jonathan proceeded to take a bag that was left inside a locker at the train station.

Proceeding to the local predetermined, Jonathan walked lazily with his hands inside his pockets.

After arriving at Times Square, he looked for his target. A Hispanic man in his mid to late twenties named Henrique, who was selling CDs to the passerby.

After a few hours of observing the guy, Jonathan noticed as Henrique finally went home because it was already night.

Getting inside an alley, Henrique was ready to take a piss when he felt something heavy hit his head. Falling headfirst into the wall, Henrique felt dizzy.

Jonathan used his foot to kick Henrique around so that the latter could face him.

"I'm sorry, nothing personal. But you just have to die." Jonathan said as he was chewing gum. His eyes were narrow, with the same lazy expression.

He didn't even give a chance for Henrique to understand what happened.

Jonathan reached for the bag strapped to his shoulder across his chest and took out a black Glock 17 with a suppressor, his hands equipped with black rubber gloves. He pointed the gun at Henrique's head and said with a low pitch voice.

"Bang."

At the same time that the word came out of his mouth, the gun was fired. The sound of a suppressed gunshot spread around the alley.

After putting a slip of paper inside Henrique's jacket, Jonathan left the alley.

Looking at the pool of rainwater on the ground, Jonathan noticed something weird.

Above the building, a black-masked man was looking straight at Jonathan, the latter noticed the reflection of that same man. The mask had white eye sockets, making them look extremely grim. It looked like the mask was looking into your soul, it was summed up with the black outfit that the man had and the fact that it was night.

Turning around and looking at the man, they both stayed staring at each other for a few seconds.

Just suddenly, Jonathan started to run in his direction. But as the man was above the building, he had to go up in some way. The alley was black as the walls carried a grey-blackish color, associated with the bad maintenance and dirt from the passage of time. It also had trash bins and using this last one as a stepping stone to reach closer to the emergency stairs from the building and climb to the roof, Jonathan showed great maneuverability as he climbed the walls like what closely resembled a parkour specialist.

What made him want to chase this guy the most was the fact that Jonathan actually felt fear, which he hadn't felt in a long time.

When he looked at that black mask with white eye sockets, he felt like the impression of that same mask had become extremely bigger as it overwhelmed him in its mouth and swallowed him whole. Like it was some kind of spirit that had a mind of its own, coming straight from hell just to eat him.

Jonathan knew what it was, despite the fear that he felt. It's an enhanced item. More specifically an artifact.

Artifacts can assume almost any property, from illusions, offensive spells, defensive spells, or even concealing spells. It looked like that black mask had an illusion for fear and concealing spell engraved upon it.

That's why he hadn't noticed the masked man's presence. And that's why he stayed calm despite the fear after witnessing that illusion, as he already knew it wasn't real.

To add more, he had seen Jonathan killing Henrique, leaving a huge loose tie as he didn't know the intentions of that creature, and if it was possible for him to interfere later.

After running and jumping with superhuman strength over the buildings for a while, Jonathan had managed to catch up to him slightly.

As he jumped, Jonathan embraced the masked man and pulled him down, which made them fall in between two buildings inside another alley.

Falling from such heights, coupled with the momentum of the jump, they crashed on the wall as they completely fell to the ground in the dark alley.

Hitting the floor, Jonathan immediately recovered as he got up and ran in the direction of the masked man. Trying to immobilize him, Jonathan lunged forward and grabbed the man's throat with both his hands, and started to roll on the ground as the black-masked man didn't have enough balance when Jonathan attacked him.

Both rolling around, the masked man used his right fist to punch Jonathan in his face a lot of times, trying to make Jonathan let go.

When that didn't work, he used the same hand to gouge Jonathan's eyes. Momentarily losing his sight, Jonathan let go of the man.

Momentarily because moments after losing both his eyes, it had already regenerated. Deciding to get serious, Jonathan's eyes now shinned red as his speed more than tripled.

Closing the gap between him and the fleeting black-masked man, Jonathan punched the man's back with great force.

Flying through the air and hitting a trash bin, the black-masked man didn't expect to be hit with such a great force. Now walking slowly towards the still in recovery black-masked man, Jonathan's eyes continued to glow red as his expression lost all the laziness that it had showed until now. His face was solemn, and the only other emotion that could be noticed was the slight anger that escaped.

Jonathan now looked the definition of frightening, instead of the lazy bored man with the mentality of a teenager.

Getting out of the destroyed metal trash bin in which he had fallen, the black-masked man staggered as he struggled to walk straight. Jonathan was about to speed towards him.

But surprising the latter, the black-masked man showed what looked like a grenade and took off the pin.

No explosions happened, but specs of shadows appeared, covering Jonathan wholly, making the latter lose his vision for a few moments. Enough for the black-masked man to truly escape this time.
