There was a loud high-pitched strident coming from the hallway. We could hear the crack of the floor from where we were hiding in the old library and who I meant by We was Reece and I.
We managed to get away from the giant spider that was chasing and escaped into this rusty and old library where we remained in a total inaudibility until we were sure the spider was gone - returned to sleep as I was told by Reece.
With that we began to walk around the library, shelves to shelves like a student hoping we could find something useful.
"This is a waste of time, there's nothing useful here. They are just loads of junk," I heard Reece said in annoyance as he placed down another dusted book.
Suddenly, my focus shifted to another shelf which didn't contain as many books as the others. Curious about what it might hold, I advanced towards it. I commenced to check when I then spotted a lot of precious stones and artifacts. Amongst them was a beautiful necklace which has the name Ashroot engraved on it. It was beautiful so I kept it for myself. I don't know why I was attracted to the necklace, but I just had a feeling it would be useful one way or another. I kept digging until I found another thing, a scroll. I picked it and blew away the settled dust before opening it.
"I found a map," I announced, waving it at Reece who rushed to my side to have a look.
"Bravo, Steven. So, how are we supposed to know it's actually the map of getting out of here?" He asked, folding his arms on his chest waiting for an answer.
"I don't know. I'm not good with maps. It will be useful sooner or later," I shrugged and Reece rolled his eyes in a boring way. I folded the map and hid it in my secure pocket.
"While you're busy with your thing, I will find a way out of this place," Reece said and walked away.
I continued finding an exit as well, it was our priority right now. I started whispering shortly, u thought it might be Reece.
"Are you saying something?" I asked in a loud voice, but he quickly warned me to keep my voice down so as not to attract the spider.
"And no, I didn't. Whatever you are hearing is abominable," he responded.
Maybe I was just hallucinating. I thought. Shortly, the whispering began confirming it real. What could it be? I thought to myself and began following the voice until I reached a door which had some sort of runes carved on it. I kept glancing at the strange door and I continued hearing the whispering coming from the other side of the door. With a frightful mind, I placed my hand on the door knob, twisting it open and entered.
Everything in the room seemed to be ordinary, like a store for the library. Nothing strange or terrifying to be precise.
"Hmm. I think I'm paranoid." I said with a heavy sigh when the center floor opened up and a little halter emerged within. Having no idea of what was happening my heart raced. I wanted to run away from the room to avoid any evil thing that was about to happen, but my legs felt stuck on the spot. I couldn't move my legs or even my entire body. I was like I was frozen. I just stood there watching as the halter unfolds a glowing ball.
Dragon ball? Please do not call it dragon ball. I cackled inwardly even when my life was in serious danger.
Unpredictable, a beam of energy was suddenly released from it striking right straight on my chest like lightning and the world went dark for like three seconds. By the time I opened my eyes again, I met myself back at the little shelf I found the map earlier.
In confusion about what just happened - or didn't happen at all - I just have the map in my hand, unfold yet.
"Bravo, Steven. So, how are we supposed to know it's actually the map of getting out of here?" I heard Reece said next to me, making me jump out of fright when I wasn't aware he was there.
Also, I've heard him say that same statement before. Reece gave me a confused look about my sudden change of behavior.
"While you're busy with your thing, I will find a way out of this place," Reece said, trying to walk away but I held him before he could.
"I think something is happening..." I was interrupted by the crazy entrance of the giant spider, bringing down everything in its way.
"Why now? We still haven't found a way yet," Reece said like he was talking to a landlord that had come to chase away his tenant that refused to pay.
I seized his hand and started to run randomly - between, inside, behind shelves until we managed to get to the exit of the library and back to the long hallway. There's no stopping now, we must run.
"You can drop my hand now, I will be able to run better," Reece said in a panting voice as he grew exhausted. I had forgotten I was still holding him.
The loud screeching of the spider rang in our heart as we saw the chasing behind us without slowing down.
"Steven... I'm tired," Reece uttered. I could see his face was drained of hope and strength. Like he has given up escaping from the restless beast.
"We can't stop now, not when I found you. I'm taking you back to your sister. I have not given up on you yet. Come on, forget the beast and think about your sister." I said as we kept running. The spider screams again, making the boy look back making him weaker. "Reece, imagine it's your sister waiting at the end of the hall for you. Picture her face when she sees you well and unharmed," I tried hoping it would level up his spirit.
I saw him smile, I guess it worked. While I was still looking at his face, I saw the sudden change in his expression of that shock as he opened his mouth in an "O". I quickly turned my face forward to see what appeared to be a portal just a little far from us.
Could this be the exit? I thought hoping it was our way of getting out.
"Uhh, are we running inside or what?" I heard him ask.
"Anything to get out of here, away from this demon," I responded and when we got there we entered.
