"Morning, Hourglass. And did someone not get enough beauty sleep last night?"
She slowly lifted her head from the drowsiness induced by her first morning tea, which she had prepared with care as the very first ritual of her day.
Haley angrily slammed her plate of pancakes down in front of her after shooting her a disappointed glare. "And it's been a full week since she promised to clean up that trashed room!"
Wish offered a sheepish smile at her friend, who only groaned, rolled her eyes, and then went to settle beside her charming boyfriend.
Wish sat up straight and watched them closely. There they were, sitting so comfortably together—even donning matching pajamas from the previous night.
Could this be the reason she hated it whenever they made love in this house?
Perhaps it was because she secretly envied her friend's life—so easy, so perfect, so effortlessly beautiful.
Her skin prickled with every time he reached out to hold her hand while they ate at the dining table. Deep inside, she longed for that tender connection for herself—with her dream man Tyler. No one had ever held her hand so lovingly before; she craved that sensation even while dreading its intimacy.
"Oh, would you let Hourglass have a break? I could call someone later today to get her room fixed up and made brand new again. It's probably why she can't sleep properly—the room looks like that."
Haley groaned in frustration, as if utterly exhausted by all the nonsense, though deep down she knew that, at this point in her life, they were the only ones who truly cared about her.
"While you're at it, could you tell her to stop wrecking the room if it's only going to disturb her sleep? And, by the way, remind her that slicing her wrist is definitely not cool either."
Haley carried her plate and left the kitchen, climbing the spiral stairs to dine in the master room she shared with her boyfriend. Meanwhile, Wish sipped her tea in silence as Ash gazed at her in amused disbelief.
"What?" she finally asked when he wouldn't stop staring. The rising rockstar simply smirked and looked away.
"Have you ever wondered why I call you Hourglass?"
For a long moment, Wish's brown eyes searched for a secret meaning behind that persistent nickname her friend's boyfriend had given her—beyond the obvious reference to her curvaceous figure.
"Because…I look like a real hourglass?" she ventured.
He chuckled and nodded. "Yeah, well. It only takes you twenty-four hours to drive my girlfriend absolutely mad with you."
Grabbing his plate and a glass of milk, he followed after his girl. Wish stared at the rockstar in disbelief at his cringe-worthy antics. None of this would be happening if she were financially stable enough to afford a house of her own. With a roll of her eyes, she tossed her untouched food into a nearby trash can, finished her cup of coffee, and then changed into the hoodie and sweatpants she'd once borrowed from Haley but never had the chance to return.
Determined, she set out to resume her early morning jog and workout. Ariana's latest album played softly in her earphones as she pounded down the lonely road.
Her long ponytail bounced in perfect sync with each determined stride.
She paused at the iron gates of the peculiar graveyard for a moment, wondering if it had always been there and she had simply been too blind to notice. She scolded herself for being overly superstitious—this was not an illusion of the storm. The graveyard remained constant no matter how many times she walked that path. Each time, she would pause before it, sometimes even stepping inside to revisit that particularly flashy graveyard.
Even when driving past, she would turn her head as far as possible to catch a quick glimpse of it. In time, it had become her second home—her most frequented refuge when boredom struck or when she needed a quiet space to reflect on her failures and ponder over her deepest insecurities.
One beautiful morning, when the sun shone too brightly for an eight‐o'clock start, the intense heat left her feeling utterly drained from her jog. She decided then to take a small, well-deserved break in her little sanctuary of buried bones and forgotten souls.
She paused the music playing on her phone and removed her ear pods. That was when she noticed—a single red rose lay waiting for her delicately on top of the golden grave.
