Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Previous Life

So, she no longer had any reservations.

"What do you mean by that?" Lu Zhen was alarmed by Leng Pan's claim.

He didn't think she would joke about something like that, but he also didn't want to accept what he thought she meant.

"The apocalypse will start in two days and this world as we know it will collapse. Flesh-eating monsters will be roaming the streets as almost 90% of the human population turn into zombies.

There will be torrential rains, extreme weather which will include temperatures rising to over 50° or falling below -50°.

Meteorites will fall from the sky causing even more devastation, and communication will completely collapse as the meteorites will smash and ruin some of the satellites.

In short, the world will come to an end and humans who are left will do anything to survive.

Hence, humanity will go back to the dark era wielding the law of the jungle where the strongest survive. There will be no morality as people will kill and sell others or themselves for the sake of a single moldy bun.

In the last few days, I have been trying to stock up on as many supplies as possible to ensure that even if we face other problems, at least we won't die of hunger or thirst.

That's also why I asked you to bring your family here. That way we can protect them."

Leng Pan said a lot in one breath and finally to a deep breath after everything was said.

She didn't know if Lu Zhen believed her. She was afraid he would think that she had gone crazy and laugh at her. So, she lowered her head.

Thus, she missed the heartache that flashed in Lu Zhen's eyes.

He actually knew that Leng Pan was not a delusional person. So, everything she said must be true.

But when he thought about how she knew about things that had yet to happen, and how she said she had lived through the apocalypse once. It was not difficult to deduce what had happened.

Even though it might be unfathomable, the idea of rebirth was not completely foreign. Since it could be written in novels, it meant that the authors got those ideas from past real events.

He just couldn't accept that he had failed to protect her and let her die.

"I am sorry Panpan." He said as he moved closer to her and pulled her into his arms.

His eyes were red with glistening tears that he didn't let fall. The pain in his heart was more than he had felt even when his grandfather who had raised him died.

Leng Pan felt the arms around her tighten and she was shocked. She hadn't even told him everything yet and he already believed her.

From his reaction, she could tell that he had already figured out about her 'rebirth'.

She raised her hands and wrapped them around his waist. It was the only way she knew she could comfort him.

"It's okay. I am here and prepared this time." She said in a way to comfort the guy, but that only made his heart feel like it was on fire.

"Why didn't I protect you? If I had protected you well, nothing would have happened to you." Lu Zhen was still blaming himself.

Figuring that if he didn't get past this huddle, it might become his heart demon, she decided to tell him everything about the plot.

"You did protect me. In fact, you protected me with your life many times and eventually died protecting me. It was me who didn't deserve your care. You sacrificed so much for me but I was caught up being a loyal friend to Bai Yinyin that I couldn't see clearly.

Only after you left did I realize how much I wanted to be with you. I just didn't figure it out earlier because you were always there.

I am sorry it took me so long and the price you paid for me to realize what I wanted was so high."

Even though Leng Pan was not the one who had gone through the apocalypse, for some reason she felt as if she had. She was extremely sad because of this and tears had started to trickle down her face.

Lu Zhen felt his shirt become damp and he panicked.

He pulled Leng Pan out of his arms and clumsily wiped her tears with his rough fingers.

"Don't cry. I would never blame you. It's already good enough that you let me protect you." He was telling the truth. Hearing Leng Pan say that he had protected her many times.

He was happy because that meant that she had let him stay by her side.

Knowing that he had died to protect her actually made him a little proud and he felt much better.

He was really a masochist. Who would be happy dying for a person who didn't even know how to appreciate them?

Leng Pan looked at Lu Zhen whose face had gone from being gloomy to sunny and was surprised.

He just found out he had died in vain and was still happy? What a weirdo!

"How did you…?" Lu Zhen didn't know how to ask that question. He wanted to know how she had died but was worried it would upset her.

"Bai Yinyin. After protecting her, scavenging for supplies and giving most of them to her. She didn't appreciate it and when she thought I had outlived my usefulness, she pushed me into a horde of zombies.

I never guarded against her so when she did that I was shocked and didn't even have time to defend myself before those monsters tore me to pieces."

When Lu Zhen heard that, he was fuming. He wanted to get up and go kill that woman that instant.

Leng Pan perceived his intention and held him down.

"Don't be impulsive. Law and order will collapse but not today. I don't want my newlywed husband to usher the apocalypse in jail. That could only guarantee that you won't live past the first day."

"But I can't let her off the hook. I know she is your friend but…" Lu Zhen started but was cut off by Leng Pan.

"She is no friend of mine. A friend will not use me then throw me aside when she deemed me useless. I want to get my revenge too, but not now. Let her keep her cheap life.

I know she knows about the apocalypse but never said a word. She doesn't know how to fight and never awakened any superpower. So, this time without me, I want to see how she survives."

"What do you mean by awakening a superpower?" Lu Zhen caught new information.
