Chapter 6 - The Current Problems of the Uchiha Clan!
"Renji, which side do you belong to?"
After arguing for a while, Uchiha Tetsu and Uchiha Setsuna finally realized something was off.
Their arguments didn't matter—they needed to hear Renji's own stance.
His words had elements that leaned toward both the radicals and the conservatives.
It was somewhat ambiguous. Although Renji had finally expressed his opinion, and the suggestions he gave were considered reasonable by both elders and even the neutral faction, it would be better if he could be more specific.
"I don't belong to any faction. I just think that whether you're conservatives or radicals, what you need to do now is reform internally and make changes externally. At least in my opinion, if no one in the village was targeting us, the Uchiha clan wouldn't be in this situation. We need to find and deal with the people behind the scenes."
Has constant compromise worked?
Not at all!
The Third Hokage might tolerate it, but Danzo definitely won't. He'll just slowly wear down the Uchiha clan's strength.
Once the Uchiha realize their power is being eroded, they'll start to stir internally. Won't that just lead to another massacre night?
So, to prevent the Uchiha clan from being wiped out, the most important thing is to deal with the Konoha F4, led by Hiruzen Sarutobi and Danzo.
"How should we reform internally? And what changes should we make externally?"
Uchiha Fugaku's eyes flashed with excitement. Finally, someone had proposed a useful suggestion.
Unlike before, where the radicals and conservatives just argued without offering any real solutions.
"First, the Military Police Force. From now on, when we encounter problems, we should just muddle through. There's no need to offend people over trivial matters. After all, it's not our problem. Even if it escalates to the village, the worst we'll get is a slap on the wrist for incompetence. If they want to strip us of our responsibilities, let them. I doubt they'd dare, since no one else would want to take on this mess!"
Renji truly didn't understand why the Uchiha clan was clinging to this hot potato. Just slack off and let it go.
"But wouldn't that create even more tension between the village and the Uchiha clan?"
Fugaku started to worry again, which made Renji roll his eyes.
It was clear that Fugaku was completely unfit to be the clan head during this period.
Having him as the leader was practically dooming the Uchiha clan.
"Let me ask you this: does the Uchiha clan pay the Military Police Force, or does the village?"
"We pay them internally."
The members of the Military Police Force receive salaries. During the Second Hokage's era, the village covered the costs. But after the Second and Third Great Ninja Wars, as well as the Nine-Tails incident, the village claimed financial difficulties and approached Fugaku to discuss whether the Uchiha clan could cover the expenses internally.
At the time, Fugaku was thinking about the aftermath of the Nine-Tails incident.
Since the Sharingan in the Nine-Tails' eyes had been seen by many, rumors spread that the Uchiha clan was planning a rebellion.
To prevent further accusations and considering that the Uchiha clan, being wealthy, could afford the expense, Fugaku decided to cover the costs internally.
Thus, the responsibility for paying the Military Police Force shifted from the village to the Uchiha clan.
"Look, the village isn't paying us, so why should we be so responsible toward them? You've always been too moralistic. If we stop caring about morality, then these problems won't be our concern, right?
We've already become the most hated group in the village. Why should we keep doing this? The village reaps all the benefits, while the Uchiha clan bears all the blame. How is that fair? So, in my opinion, the first step to solving our current predicament is to stop trying so hard!"
That's right!
The best thing to do is to stop trying!
Since the village isn't paying us, and doing our jobs only earns us criticism and complaints, why bother?
The village pacifies the villagers, scolds the Uchiha, and gains their goodwill. Meanwhile, the Uchiha get scolded and hated by the villagers. All the benefits go to Hiruzen Sarutobi, while we're left fuming. Isn't that just asking for a rebellion?
Who doesn't want to be respected?
Being criticized and pointed at every day, trying to do things fairly only to be accused of bias—why bother? Let's just stop playing this game and slack off!
"I agree. Elder, even though I'm part of the conservative faction, I'm tired of putting up with this nonsense. Every day, someone's either yelling at me or accusing me of doing a bad job!"
Even among the conservatives led by Uchiha Tetsu, many agreed with this sentiment.
After all, they had tried their best to change the villagers' perception of the Uchiha clan.
But instead of gratitude, they were met with hostility.
Of course, they weren't happy about it.
"But if we do this, I won't have any leverage when dealing with the village..."
Fugaku was at a loss.
If they took this approach, he knew there would be no room for negotiation with the village in the future.
"Who cares? Look at how the village is treating the Uchiha clan. What's wrong with us doing this?"
Uchiha Setsuna frowned, clearly annoyed with Fugaku. Once, he had considered Fugaku a great clan leader, but now, the way Fugaku handled things was becoming increasingly frustrating.
Why was he so indecisive?
"Clan Head, I think you should hold off on making a decision for now. I still have more to say. Let me finish, and then we can discuss further, okay?"
Renji knew Fugaku's indecisiveness was kicking in again.
On one hand, Fugaku wanted to change the Uchiha clan's situation and take a stronger stance.
On the other hand, he feared that being too强硬 (strong) would widen the rift between the Uchiha clan and Konoha, eventually leading to conflict.
It was this constant wavering between the two that ultimately led Fugaku to lead the entire clan to their doom.
"Alright!"
After some deep thought, Fugaku nodded in agreement.
"Then, based on what I've said earlier, let me share my thoughts on the relationship between the Uchiha clan and Konoha. You can all go back and think about it.
I've already talked about the Military Police Force. Now, let's move on to the second issue—the external problems facing the Uchiha clan. This is the most critical issue that must be resolved!"
