Chapter 9 - — New old friends

Luna looked at him. Curious.

"So, you've finally awakened, huh, Jack? What rank are you?"

"…I'm an E-Rank."

"Hm, that's unfortunate, you always used to tell me how you would catch up when I awakened. But, are you lying to me, Jack?"

Jack could tell she was a dangerous woman. Even though they were 'old friends' she looked as if she would kill him if he made a single step in the wrong direction.

"Why would I lie?"

"Well, Jack, I've seen my fair share of camouflage skills. But, usually I can sense even the slightest mana signature. Especially if its an E-Rank skill, so…are you lying to me, Jack?"

"No."

"Alright then."

In a split second Jack felt her fist coming down. He quickly dashed to the side.

"…surely you must be lying. E-Rankers definitely can't dodge that."

"Well, I'm an E-Rank…so…"

Jack quickly activated his camouflage and dashed away before any more trouble transpired.

'Shit, that could've done a number on me if I didn't dodge…I didn't imagine she would be so aggressive.'

He felt an impulsive strain in his heart. He was…disappointed. Though he didn't know why. He needed to be stronger. He wanted to be strong enough to face her. For some reason…

'So, this body, these memories…they leave an imprint on my soul.'

Jack chuckled a bit. It was an odd concept. He was becoming a person he wasn't. He hated it. But in a way it felt…deserving. In order to give himself another chance, he had taken it away from another 'Jack'. Perhaps it was the price he paid. Although, he couldn't be sure, he didn't exactly know how the system worked, it said it reconstructed his body…but…

'Im not so sure that's true…if it was, I don't think I would be affected by her at all. Those memories…maybe they aren't artificial.'

The system remained silent.

"Great. Aren't you feeling helpful?"

He sighed and continued home. Although, he still found the events inside the rift…interesting, to say the least.

'I don't care what bullshit the system makes up…even if it is true, how the hell was he…no, that thing…still alive…it seemed more like a zombie. It didn't even say a word. Just grunted loudly, in constant pain.'

He walked inside his apartment and sat on his bed. Looking up at the roof. Before drifting off to sleep.

This time, his dreams took him to a pitch black room. A gaping hole in front of him. He couldn't move. Paralyzed in…fear? Or something else…suddenly, two gigantic glowing green lights appeared in front of him, and they had…slits on them. And two more appeared as well. Each one was 3 times the size of him.

"Bear witness! Oracle of Destruction!"
