Amanda Smith had originally planned to wait for Samuel Johnson to come back at noon and clarify things with him. Although conflicts were building up and Samuel was being unreasonable, she still wanted to talk to him properly. She didn't want a small matter to escalate into something this severe.
But she waited all day and didn't see Samuel Johnson return.
This was very unusual, as although he sometimes went out for business, he would still come back for lunch. Today he hadn't returned, which easily led Amanda to speculate why he wasn't coming back.
He was avoiding her.
The thought made Amanda grind her teeth in frustration.
She was restless all day until just before dinner when Samuel finally came back.
