Chapter 12 - Email To The Doctors

During lunchtime, Chuck, Sandra, and Mr. Miller were still engaged in their work at the office. Chuck relished the opportunity to work alongside his grandfather and enjoyed Sandra's company as well; he stole glances at her whenever he had the chance.

"Are you hungry, my child?" Mr. Miller inquired.

"Yes, I am quite hungry, though it appears we have a substantial amount of work to complete here," Chuck replied.

"That's alright, my child. Sandra will escort you to the cafeteria for lunch. What about you, Grandpa?" Chuck asked.

"Sandra will bring me some fruit on your way back," Mr. Miller responded. With that, Sandra and Chuck made their way to the cafeteria.

Upon arriving at the café, Sandra ordered a meal for both of them, and they took a seat at a small table designed for two. In no time, their food was served, and they began to eat. After approximately half an hour, Chuck had finished his lunch and, once Sandra completed her meal, he couldn't resist asking, "How long have you been working for my grandfather?"

"About six years," Sandra replied.

"That's wonderful; it sounds like you and my grandfather have a good relationship."

"Something like that," Sandra acknowledged.

"Since I began working for your grandfather, he has been an excellent boss and treats me like family. He once mentioned having a grandson he has never met—he's only seen a picture of you as a small child, taken by a private detective he hired to safeguard his son and his family. Tragically, the son and his wife later perished in a road accident, but their son survived. He has been searching for you ever since, and now here you are, safe, energetic, and quite handsome."

"Are you flattering me?" Chuck teased, noting how comfortable they were in conversation despite having only met that morning.

As the time approached for their return to the office, Sandra placed an order for Mr. Miller's fruit, and they exited the cafeteria, located on the 95th floor, exclusively accessible to the board of directors. They boarded the elevator and returned to the office.

Upon their arrival, Mr. Miller was pleased to see them walking side by side and commented on their apparent rapport. "It seems you are both getting along well," he observed. Chuck nodded in agreement, which caused Sandra to appear a bit shy. She proceeded to wash the fruit at the sink and presented it to Mr. Miller, who was seated on the couch watching television.

"Thank you, Sandra, my child," Mr. Miller said appreciatively. With that, both Chuck and Sandra returned to their desks and continued their work.

At approximately 3 PM, both Mr. Miller and Chuck were diligently engaged in their responsibilities, although the workload proved to be quite substantial. Just as they were preparing to conclude their day, Mr. Smith, the Vice President, entered the office, carrying a file. He took a seat on the couch adjacent to Mr. Miller, and they began a discussion regarding the promotion of one of the doctors to the position of Director of Clinical Services, as the current Director was nearing retirement after more than a decade of service at the hospital.

During their conversation, Mr. Miller requested that Sandra draft an email to inform all doctors about an upcoming meeting in the conference room located on the 103rd floor. Sandra promptly acknowledged the request and composed the email, which was subsequently distributed to all physicians, including Dr. Allison and Dr. Dorothy, who had attended to a patient named Chuck on the night he sought treatment at the hospital.

At that time, Dr. Allison was enjoying a late lunch with a colleague, Louis, at a nearby hotel when she received an email directly from the President's office. It was a rare occurrence for anyone at the hospital to receive correspondence from the President, so she was quite surprised. Upon opening the email, she discovered the meeting would address not only a farewell for Dr. Hoffman, the outgoing Director of Clinical Services, but also a discussion on potential candidates for his successor.

The meeting was scheduled to take place in three days. Dr. Allison, who had long aspired to a promotion, felt optimistic upon reading the email, envisioning the possibility of being considered for the director role. Despite her complicated history with Chuck, she remained dedicated to her work and had recently been promoted to the head of the medical team. She eagerly anticipated the chance to ascend to the position of Director of Clinical Services.

Later, Mr. Smith departed the office, prompting Mr. Miller to inform Chuck and Sandra that it was time to end their day. Sandra powered down her computer, while Chuck organized the documents that were left scattered across his desk.

Together, they exited the office, accompanied by their security detail, and proceeded to the elevator. Upon reaching the basement level designated for the President and Vice President, they found the driver waiting for them. Sandra bid them farewell and proceeded to her vehicle, departing promptly.

Chuck and his grandfather soon exited the building and headed straight home. After arriving, they each retreated to their rooms to freshen up. Later that evening, Chuck joined his grandfather for dinner, and following their meal, they settled in the living room. Once the news segment concluded, Chuck's grandfather retired to his room, leaving Chuck in the television room alone.

Feeling both sleepy and fatigued, Chuck eventually went to his room to rest. Once there, he sent a text to Sandra, inquiring about their agenda for the following day. Sandra, being an exceptionally organized secretary, promptly provided her to-do list. Chuck expressed his gratitude with a thank-you message and wished her a good night before turning in. Sandra responded with her own goodnight message, and soon after, Chuck was enveloped in slumber.
