Chapter 2 - waking from a dream

At first, it felt like a dream—one Corey didn't want to wake up from. No more second-guessing his assessments, no more flipping through drug guides in a panic. He could see vitals, lab values, even the name of a diagnosis hovering above each patient like a heads-up display. He breezed through clinicals with a precision that stunned his instructors. His confidence grew with every successful intervention, every life saved with ease.

But as days passed, the shine began to wear off. Corey noticed things the system couldn't tell him—like the fear behind a patient's eyes, or the way someone clung to hope in silence. He watched fellow students struggle to connect with patients the way he used to before the system dulled his instincts. His care became efficient, robotic, almost too perfect.

Then came the first patient the system couldn't read.

No diagnosis. No treatment plan. Just a blinking question mark and a human being in pain.

Corey stood frozen, the comfort of certainty stripped away. For the first time since waking up in this strange new world, he had to rely on something deeper—his own knowledge, his empathy, his gut. Maybe this system was a gift, but it couldn't replace the heart of a nurse.

And as Corey leaned in to listen, to really listen, he realized something powerful: maybe the real magic wasn't in the system at all. Maybe it was in him.
