Cherreads

Chapter 6 - transition into nursing

After graduation, Corey landed his first job on a high-acuity med-surg unit. The transition was intense. No longer shielded by instructors or preceptors, the full weight of responsibility hit him. Codes, rapid responses, family grief, ethical gray zones—it was real, raw, and unforgiving.

But Corey didn't break.

The system, now a silent presence integrated into his perception, offered subtle flashes of guidance—a hunch to check that patient *one more time*, a quiet tug to re-read a lab value, a whisper of a forgotten pathophysiology fact that turned out to be critical. It never took over. It didn't make the hard decisions for him. It simply sharpened what was already inside.

Over time, Corey began mentoring new grads. They gravitated toward him, not because he had all the answers, but because he never pretended to. He taught them to listen—to their patients, to their team, to themselves. He reminded them that medicine wasn't just about knowledge or technology—it was about presence. Humanity. Heart.

But the story didn't end at bedside nursing.

One night, after a particularly difficult shift involving a young sepsis patient he couldn't save, the interface pulsed again for the first time in months.

**"New Pathway Unlocked: Nurse Leader. Advocate. Educator."**

Corey stared at the message, eyes heavy but mind awake.

He had spent so long trying to survive the system.

Now, maybe, it was time to *change* it.

With a deep breath, Corey began charting his next level—not in code or data—but in courage, truth, and the power of nursing.
