(Opening Scene: Kurozane and Astrid continue their journey through the darkening monster forest. The moon casts long, distorted shadows, and the air is thick with the sounds of nocturnal creatures. Astrid's falcon, Zephyr, circles silently overhead.)
A growing unease prickled at the back of Kurozane's neck. He couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. The usual sounds of the forest seemed muted in certain areas, replaced by an unnatural silence. He glanced at Astrid, who seemed focused on the path ahead, her hand resting on the hilt of her longsword.
Suddenly, Zephyr screeched a sharp warning from above, diving low over the trees ahead. Before Astrid could react, a creature of nightmare erupted from the dense undergrowth. It was large and hunched, with razor-sharp claws and glowing yellow eyes that pierced the gloom. Its body was covered in thick, thorny hide, and it moved with surprising speed and agility.
The Thornhide Beast, as such creatures were known in local lore, lunged directly at Astrid, its claws extended. Astrid reacted instantly, drawing her longsword in a swift arc. The blade clashed against the beast's thorny hide, sparks flying, but the thick armor seemed to deflect the blow.
The Thornhide Beast roared, a guttural sound filled with primal aggression, and swiped again with its massive claws. Astrid nimbly dodged, but one claw grazed her arm, tearing through her leather armor and drawing a thin line of blood.
Kurozane, initially caught off guard, felt a surge of adrenaline. He couldn't stand by and watch Astrid get hurt, especially after she had offered him help. The mental link with Eclipse pulsed faintly, a silent urging.
Without conscious thought, the shadows around Kurozane seemed to deepen and writhe. A tendril of dark energy snaked out from his hand, lashing towards the Thornhide Beast. The creature recoiled as the shadowy tendril struck its thorny hide, a hiss escaping its fanged maw.
Astrid, surprised by Kurozane's sudden action, stumbled back, her stormy eyes wide with astonishment. She had sensed a strange energy emanating from him, a darkness that seemed to twist the very shadows.
The Thornhide Beast, momentarily distracted by Kurozane's unexpected attack, turned its glowing yellow eyes on him. It roared again, its attention now fully focused on this new threat. It lumbered towards Kurozane, its thorny hide offering formidable protection against conventional attacks.
Kurozane knew his shadowy tendrils alone wouldn't be enough to defeat this creature. He focused his will, picturing the cold, sharp form of the Null Blade. The shadows around his hand intensified, swirling and solidifying. The obsidian blade began to materialize once more, its cold energy radiating into the night air.
Astrid watched in stunned silence as the shadowy weapon formed in Kurozane's hand. The vagueness of his earlier answers now seemed like a deliberate deception. Whatever he was, he was far more dangerous – and potentially more valuable – than she had initially thought. The monster forest had yielded more than just a lost boy; it had revealed someone wielding powers she had never witnessed before.
