Cherreads

Chapter 4 - Seeker of Beauty

In the family café of Mr. Qwiz, Dayas sits at one of the staff tables sipping his coffee while listening with boredom to his brother Scorpy, who is reproaching him:

"Haven't you read your horse's contract yet!" It's been a week since it was completed.

Dayas replies:

"I told you, it's not a horse but a donkey, and I read it... there was only a summoning method in it."

Scorpy:

"What! But that's impossible, there should be a detailed explanation of the horse's powers."

Dayas:

"I told you, it's not a horse but..."

And before Dayas can finish his sentence, an attention-grabbing blind old man suddenly enters the place, wearing a tattered white cloak resembling that of biologists, saying loudly:

"Where is that boy with the wishes, they told me he works here."

Scorpy:

"Aah, here we go again."

Dayas calling out:

"I'm sitting here, old man."

The old man approaches Dayas with his white cane for the blind and then sits next to him, feeling his face with the tip of his cane as he says:

"I'm here to make a deal with you, young man."

Dayas replies while trying to push the cane away from his face, saying:

"What deal?"

The blind old man:

"I can restore your feelings, but with a condition."

Dayas is shocked upon hearing the old man's words and says:

"Really! How?"

The old man:

"I want to marry a beautiful girl. If you can find one and convince her to marry me, I will return your feelings."

Scorpy adds:

"That's impossible."

Dayas:

"That's strange... why would a blind person need beauty?"

The blind old man:

"To show off to others, of course."

Dayas:

"But what's the point of showing off to others something you can't see yourself? That's foolishness."

The blind old man:

"That's my only condition; either you fulfill it or there's no deal."

Dayas grabs Scorby's arm, turning him around and then whispers:

"He's blind; let's marry him Cinnamon as if she were a beautiful girl."

Scorpy:

"My friend... your morals are in the gutter."

The old man interrupts them, saying:

"This won't work with me, young man... As you know, when one sense is taken away, the others compensate for the loss, including hearing, of course."

At that moment, a beautiful girl with short black hair calls out to Dayas while putting on the waitress's apron, saying:

"Dayas, I'm sorry I'm late..."

But the girl notices Scorpy and shyly shifts her address to him, saying:

"Oh Scorpy... you're here too."

At that moment, an idea strikes Dayas, and he grabs his brother's arm again, turning him around and speaking in a low voice:

"Scorpy, what do you think about marrying 'Loris'?"

Scorpy responds angrily:

"You're crazy, she's Professor Qwiz's daughter..."

The blind old man joins their conversation:

"Great idea, but how will we convince her?"

Dayas:

"That's what I'm thinking about now."

Loris firmly:

"Don't even think about it."

The Blind Old Man:

"Ah, I think there's no other choice then, we will have to go to the guarded spring of the nymphs."

Dayas:

"Wow, I'm interested now, but do you know where it is?"

The Blind Old Man:

"It's clear that the place is magical, it must be in the second universe."

Then he adds, asking:

"But I don't know its exact location, and also how we will get there?"

At that moment, the two brothers turn to each other, answering in unison:

"We know someone who might help us."

A little later, inside the Gorky ship, Scorpy thanks the ship owner sitting next to him at the helm, saying:

"Thank you for the ride, my friend, it really means a lot."

Gorky replies, smiling shyly as usual while driving:

"Anything for the heroes of our city."

Dayas from the back, complaining:

"Haven't we arrived yet? I'm starting to feel dizzy again."

Gorky:

"We're almost there, Mr. Dayas."

Dayas to Scorpy, mocking:

"Ha, did you hear that? He said Mr. Daias.

Scorpy:

"Come on, yes, he doesn't know you're just a fool."

Dayas, annoyed:

"Hey!"

The blind old man interrupts the three friends, asking Gorky with a strange eagerness:

"So, Gorky, isn't that right? What do you know about the fountain of the fairies?"

Dayas:

"Whoa, my friend, take it easy."

Gorky, answering the old man:

"Well, to be precise, I don't know the location of the fountain of the fairies; I only know the entrance, which is guarded by one of the strongest guardians on our planet."

Gorky continues, his tone becoming more serious, adding:

"But there is something important you all need to know, guys; there is a very dangerous secret that no one knows about, so please be careful."

Gorky drops off Dayas, Scorpy, and the old man when they arrive in front of a long path made of thorny pink flowers amidst an expansive green meadow, then says:

"Alright, I will wait for you here; you should follow this path."

The three take the path and find themselves in a small green courtyard surrounded by three mountains, with the last one having a path that looks exactly like the first one. Dayas then complains:

"Ugh, another long corridor; I'm tired."

The three head towards the passage, and Dayas notices to his right, while walking with his companions, a massive cave filled with a dark gloom. He stares into it intently, but suddenly two huge eyes shine in front of him, causing Dayas to cautiously step back, saying to his companions:

"Hey guys, I think we're going to face a huge problem."

He then steps forward slowly, revealing himself from the cave's darkness as a giant centaur while saying:

"I am the guardian of the entrance to the spring of the nymphs, and my task is to not allow any creature to pass through this passage. I ask you to return safely from where you came."

Scorpy then interjects, looking in astonishment at the centaur, saying:

"Wow, I never knew there were centaurs this size."

Dayas, questioning:

"Centaurs?"

Scorpy:

"Yes, centaurs don't have a specific home; they are always scattered, and their main task is to guard treasure mazes... but this centaur... it's much larger than those we studied in the academy's books."

Dayas:

"And that's why I don't like the academy; it always gives you incomplete information."

Scorpy:

"Well, I think we should head back now... it looks very strong."

The blind old man interrupts Scorby, saying to Dayas:

"No, we should continue. Don't forget our agreement, young one."

Dayas:

"If so, we have no choice but to fight as a team."

The blind old man, with a serious expression:

"I'm sorry, boy, but I promised never to fight."

Dayas:

"Why! Is it because you're too strong and don't want to hurt others?"

The blind old man:

"No, it's because I am very weak and don't want to hurt my back."

Dayas smiles then says:

"Let you two run towards the entrance while I try to distract it; I'll catch up with you when the opportunity arises."

Scorpy replies as he runs with the old man towards the entrance:

"Don't fight it, just keep avoiding its attacks until we cross."

Dayas starts running around the giant centaur to draw its attention, prompting the centaur to try to catch him. Meanwhile, Scorpy stops after entering the passage, telling the old man:

"Wait, I forgot to warn him; continue without me, Daais and I will catch up."

The old man replies with a smile:

"Good, I'll be waiting for you."

Scorpy returns for Dayas to find him exhausted as he continues to avoid the centaur's attacks. Scorpy warns him:

"Hey, Dayas, the centaurs control the ground; you need to hurry before it gets more annoyed."

At that moment, the centaur turns to Scorpy, who is standing in the passage, and goes wild, striking its front hooves against the ground with force, causing a strong earthquake. This earthquake lifts Dayas up, and he exclaims:

"Why does everyone always forget my warning?"

Dayas begins to fall from a great height and somehow finds himself on a large pile of hay, then escapes from the centaur, heading towards the entrance. The two friends finally succeed in crossing, and Dayas asks Scorpy:

"Was that pile of hay there when we arrived?"

Scorpy replies:

"What pile? I couldn't see anything because of the dust."

Dayas says:

"Don't worry about it, let's just continue."

Dayas and Scorpy continue their path until they soon arrive in front of a stunning spring surrounded by five towering mountains, from the middle mountain flows a huge waterfall. The brothers move slowly, showing their astonishment at the magnificent scene, as the thick steam begins to dissipate little by little, revealing something strange: all the nymphs are unconscious. Dayas and Scorpy cautiously approach the nymphs when suddenly one of them calls out to them, struggling to maintain her composure, saying:

"You two, this place is forbidden...

Before the nymph can finish her words, she collapses, fainting as well. At that moment, the companions hear the sound of crazy laughter coming from behind the waterfall, so they rush in to find themselves inside a huge cave resembling a palace, where the blind old man sits on his throne, binding the queen beside him. Dayas then says:

"I understand now."

He then addresses Scorpy, adding:

"What do you think, brother? A real fight?"

Scorpy:

"It seems that's what's going to happen."

At the same time, Gorky has entered the green centaur's courtyard, finding him sitting and waiting in front of the second passage that his friends entered. He approaches him hesitantly and says while trying to hide his fear:

"Mr. Centaur, sorry for the disturbance, but have you seen my friend... one has a scorpion tail and the other..."

The centaur interrupts him, saying:

"Oh, so those fools are your friends. Sorry, sir, but the chances of their return are very slim."

Gorky:

"I didn't understand anything, can you explain... please?"

Dayas and Scorpy enter into a magical fight with the blind old man, and Scorpy is amazed by the strength of their opponent, saying:

"Wow, this fight is unexpectedly close!"

Dayas jokingly:

"Yeh, didn't he say his back hurts?"

The old man opens his robe, holding some chemical test tubes, and laughs:

"Chemistry and biology, my little ones, it's what makes this old man strong, ha ha ha."

Dayas:

"But why are you doing this? Didn't you say all you want is to marry a beautiful girl to show off?"

The blind old man:

"Yes, but there's no harm in conducting some experiments on rare nymphs as well."

Hearing the old man's words, Scorpy rushes towards the queen to untie her, but as soon as the tape is removed from her mouth, the queen pushes him away, causing the blind old man to yell at him:

"No, you fool, the nymph will..."

And before he finishes his sentence, the nymph emits a loud, terrifying sound that makes everyone feel dizzy, causing Scorpy to fall to the ground, holding his head in pain. The queen approaches him with fierce looks while preparing for another scream, and Scorpy puts his fingers in his ears, trying to avoid the sound shock. The queen releases her second sound shock, which is suddenly interrupted by another sound shock with a beautiful rhythm. Scorpy, with his confused gaze, looks up to find Gorky standing at his head trying to save him, but he loses consciousness. Scorpy and Dayas wake up a little later to find themselves inside Gorky's ship, and he smiles at them, saying:

"I'm glad I was able to catch up with you before it was too late."

Scorpy:

"What exactly happened?"

Gorky:

"After you left me on the ship, I became curious to discover the secret of the spring, but when I reached that centaur, I learned from him that he does not guard the spring from people, but rather guards people from the spring due to the extreme danger of the nymphs, for they never forgive those who intrude on their place."

Scorpy:

"Then how did you manage to get us out of there?"

Gorky:

"The queen of the nymphs was impressed by my vocal abilities, so she spared you for my sake."

Scorpy:

"If I'm not hallucinating, you are the owner of that voice... it seems you are hiding some surprises."

Dais, gratefully:

"Gorky, my hero... but what about that old man?"

Gorky:

"Ah, right, I discovered after entering the academy's site and reading its history that you previously had a chemistry and biology teacher known as the old madman Marv, and the director of the academy at that time removed his eyes for discovering that he was conducting horrific unknown experiments on some students."

Scorpy remembering:

"Ah, the mermaids, we must go back to save them."

Gorky laughing:

"Haha, Mr. Scorpy, it seems you weren't paying attention to my words well due to the sonic shock; the mermaids may seem delicate, but in reality, they are monsters..."

Suddenly, Gorky is interrupted by a horrific scream coming from behind them, and he continues his speech seriously, saying:

"They must be tearing the flesh from his bones right now."

One of the Queen of Mermaids' servants replies after the strangers leave that cave, saying:

"Hah, it seems they haven't discovered the secret."

The Queen:

"Yes, they don't know they haven't even crossed the entrance yet."
