Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: The Unseen Path

The moon hung low in the sky, casting long shadows over the snow-covered forest. The hunt was over, but the silence remained thick, as if the entire forest was holding its breath.

Li Rong stood still, his eyes locked on the spirit ring that hovered above the limp body of the Shadowfang Rabbit. His hand still gripped the knife, now coated in a layer of fresh blood, but his mind was already turning, processing the power surging through him.

The Shadowstep ability pulsed within his veins, making his limbs feel lighter, quicker. He had absorbed the ring seamlessly, but the true test of this new power was yet to come.

Li Xue remained at his side, her breath forming small clouds in the cold air. She was still watching him, her icy blue eyes filled with curiosity and something else—admiration, maybe even a hint of respect. She had seen his skill during the hunt, but now, she was about to see something new.

"You're different," she murmured, her voice barely a whisper.

Rong turned to her, his eyes cool, but there was a flicker of something in his expression—something akin to pride. "I've learned something new," he said simply, wiping the blood from his blade before sheathing it.

Ren Yao stepped forward, his brows furrowed in confusion. "What do you mean?" He looked between Rong and the glowing ring. "You've already taken the spirit ring, haven't you?"

Rong didn't answer right away. Instead, he took a step back, feeling the pulse of the new ability inside him. He could feel the energy humming at the edges of his senses, the power now a part of him.

Before anyone could ask again, Rong's voice broke through the tension. "Watch closely."

Without warning, he darted forward. His movement was a blur—a shadow slipping between the trees, faster than the eye could follow. In a heartbeat, he had crossed the clearing and was standing a good twenty feet away.

Li Xue's eyes widened, and Ren Yao let out a startled gasp.

"What the—" Ren Yao stammered, his voice full of disbelief.

Rong stood still for a moment, his hand outstretched as if the movement hadn't taken a fraction of the time it should have. He turned back to the group, meeting their astonished gazes with a calm that only added to the gravity of the moment.

"I call it Shadowstep," he said, his voice steady and low. "It's a technique that lets me instantly dash in a direction, leaving behind a blur. It's perfect for evasion, or closing the gap between myself and an opponent."

He could feel the energy inside him still flowing, waiting for the next use. His heart raced with the thrill of the new power, but he knew better than to revel in it too long. This was only the beginning.

Li Xue was the first to recover from her surprise. "That's... incredible," she said, her voice laced with awe. "It's as if you just melted into the shadows."

Rong nodded. "Exactly. It lets me move faster than most can react. It's a skill meant for those who need to stay one step ahead."

Ren Yao stared at him in disbelief. "And you've had this all along? How... How did you even—"

Rong's eyes flickered briefly to the glowing spirit ring that remained, pulsing gently on the ground. "The rabbit's spirit ring gave me this power," he explained. "But it's not something I learned from the beast itself. It's a technique that I unlocked through my own abilities."

Ren Yao shook his head, trying to wrap his mind around it. "That's unreal. We've all heard of the Shadowfang Rabbit, but no one has ever been able to use its power in that way before."

"That's because most would never think to tap into it," Li Rong said with a slight smirk. "Power is not just about what you can take from a beast. It's about what you can learn and shape from it."

Li Xue looked at him with newfound respect. "You're different," she said softly. "This is more than just a hunt for you, isn't it?"

Rong met her gaze, his expression unreadable. "The hunt is just the beginning. Power is just a tool. But what you do with it—that's what matters."

The words hung in the air, the weight of them sinking into the quiet night. Elder Li Jian, who had been silent up until now, stepped forward, his eyes narrowing as he surveyed the scene.

"You've proven yourself today," Elder Li Jian said, his voice low but tinged with approval. "But this is only one step of many. The clan has more to offer than just beasts and power. The real challenge will come in the halls of the clan."

Li Rong didn't flinch at the elder's words. He had anticipated them. The true battle, the one that would define his path, was not in the wilds but within the very walls of the clan. The political maneuvering, the scheming—it would be a far greater test of his abilities.

He met Li Jian's gaze, his voice calm but firm. "I'm ready."

Li Jian's lips curled into a slight, almost imperceptible smile. "We shall see."

With that, the group began the trek back to the clan's stronghold. The snow crunched beneath their feet as they moved, but Li Rong's mind was already far ahead. He had unlocked something new, something that would serve him well in the days to come. And he knew this was just the first of many abilities he would develop.

As they walked, Li Xue's voice broke the silence once more. "Do you think... we'll be ready when the time comes?"

Li Rong glanced at her, his face impassive, yet something flickered in his eyes—a quiet determination. "We'll be ready."

The path ahead was unclear, but for the first time, Li Rong felt a true sense of purpose burning within him. The road would be difficult, but he would walk it, step by shadowy step.
