Chapter 3 - Chapter 2 : Life and Death

"Hello, Ryan" An extremely loud and annoying voice said.

"You have been selected for a chance at a new life, a once in a million years kind of thing. You will be put into a new world full of combat, magic, and monsters where you will need to grow powerful in order to survive. "

What!? My head is so... foggy. I can't really understand exactly what she is saying but her voice is so goddamn loud.

"Where am I?"

"You are currently in a place in-between life and death. Does that satisfy your curiosity?"

"I'm sorry, but Magic? Combat? Life and death? That's just stuff in mangas and animes. It's not real, never has been, never was."

"To answer your question of magic, combat, life, and death, Earth was a planet that had no specific god or entity to grant it their blessing. While we are able to interact with Earth to a certain extent, such as retrieving souls, we aren't able to provide it with magic."

Okay, that settles . . . some questions. Alright, let me think... What can I ask right now that will give me an explanation to why I'm here and what I have to do next? . . . "HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO THINK WHEN MY BRAIN ISN'T WORKING"

"I understand your frustration but it's a side effect of transmitting your soul and we are unable to do anything about it."

Ryan took a deep breath, calming himself down. He didn't want to offend this "almighty being".

"Okay then, how do I develop my powers in this new world?"

"You will have access to two main systems. The general one is known as the Status. Everybody in this world has the status and it displays their overall information, magic, power level, and combat ability."

"The second one is known as the reincarnation system. Only reincarnates such as your self have access to this system. It is designed to help you develop at a faster rate than other people."

Well, at least I have that. "Please define magic and combat ability. I've noticed how these power thingies vary from manga to manga."

"Of course. Magic is a skill type system. Every person in this world gets one skill at birth, via blessing of the magic god. Each skill is divided into eight ranks. I will now show you the rankings."

Suddenly, he could open his eyes, which was restricted before. He couldn't see anything, not even himself, just the text floating in front of him.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Skill Rankings and Destructibility.

Common - Skills that can destroy a small creature/human.

Intermediate - Skills that can destroy small buildings.

Advanced - skills that can destroy a large building.

Adept - Skills that can destroy a city.

Master - Skills that can destroy multiple cities.

Grandmaster - Skills that can destroy a small country.

Paragon - Skills that are able to destroy continents/worlds.

Divine - Skills that are able to destroy worlds/universes.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Types

Usage - Skills that perform a basic function or task. For example, creating fresh water.

Destruction/Combat - Skills that are designed to be used in combat or to destroy things.

Passive - Skills that grant the user a passive effect.

Enhancing - Skills that allow the user to enhance their own or other peoples skills.

Healing - Skills that allow the user to heal other people/themselves.

Other - Any skill that doesn't fall into the other categories or has multiple functions.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Those are the skill rankings and the types of skills. Each skill ranking is split between minus, no sign, and plus. (Adept-, Adept, Adept+)Your skills are able to evolve in strength as your proficiency increases. It becomes increasingly difficult to increase your rank the higher you go."

"Combat ability is more of an overall ranking of what level of creature you can fight. For example, if you have a divine enhancing skill but you're extremely terrible at fighting, you might only get to adept or master. Combat ability follows the same rankings as skills but can be extremely different depending on how well you're able to use them."

"I'd like to apologize but we're running out of time here. You only have time for potentially two more questions."

Okay, okay, okay. Breathe..... Alright I know my two questions.

"What is the first thing I should do in order to get stronger?"

"That's an interesting question. We recommend joining the Royal Academy of Leinburg. They only accept nobles but with the new headmaster it's possible for you to join as a commoner. Focus on growing as strong as possible before you're able to be admitted. You might have a headstart on age, but the nobles have a headstart on resources."

"Alright, and for my last question, what were the two pebbles outside my hospital?"

.

.

.

Silence.

Ryan couldn't see the person talking, and the voice went straight inside his head. He didn't know how exactly. But he knew. He knew that they were smirking.

"The first pebble, the blue one, was the orb of reincarnation. We place it in front of candidates for reincarnation and it uses magic to make them curious enough to pick it up and absorb it."

"Hold on, the ORB? That thing was round but not at all an orb."

"That's really your main concern here? Funny, you'll be an interesting one. Now moving on to the next orb.... Looks like we're out of time!"

"I truly wish you luck on your journey... Receiver of #####."

"Wait! I still have more questions!"

And it all faded to black.
