Chapter 1 - Lost

Awakening to an unfamiliar sight, the sun. My eyes had to adjust to the sudden wave of light. Lifting myself up I felt something I shouldn't. Grass? My head went on a swivel and my senses became more and more alert.

What's going on; what the hell am I doing outside? I hurriedly got up off the ground and the sounds of a nearby by waterfall came within earshot. Where am I! I could feel my chest beginning to tighten as the unfamiliar surroundings became clear. What happened? I tried to recall the night before but all I could remember was me falling asleep like usual. Am I dreaming? I quickly shook off the notion as this was all too real. Am I dead? I patted my body around to check for any wounds but couldn't find anything. If death had a feeling this wouldn't be it.

There were lush green trees and vines that swirled around them. Am I in a jungle?

"Ow!" I swiped a giant looking bug off me. That thing bit me! What is that? I almost threw up just looking at it. It was covered in red stripes and its wings were green, judging by the repeated fluttering sound its wings were making I did not kill it.

I slowly backpedaled in the opposite direction heading to the sound of the waterfall. Thankfully, I didn't have to travel too far to reach it. As a lake surrounding the waterfall came into view. I observed the area before coming any closer.

Once I made sure there wasn't anyone or anything around the lake I inched forward. I stayed away from the water as it was dark enough for me to not be able to see the bottom of it. I've heard of people getting dragged into lakes and ponds by alligators and I won't be one of them.

Though who knows if anyone would even be able to tell the story, I haven't seen or heard a sign of civilization yet. Which is becoming more worrisome with each passing second.

As I begin to leave I heard a noise that caused my heart to sink. A low heinous growl about 20 feet from me. Its giant white tiger no a bear I don't know what it is but the look in its eyes were murderous. How long has that thing been there? I could've sworn there was nothing here just a second ago. The animal continued to stare at me. I wanted to run but was afraid it would give chase. Do I attack first, with what? There was nothing to use but a few twigs on the ground, nothing to defend myself with. At a loss I saw the animal's leg twitch. I see its made the decision for me.

Without a second thought I took off as fast I could using every fiber and leg muscle to get away from there as quickly as possible. I didn't stop until I could no longer run.

After running for what felt like miles, exhausted I stopped and hugged a nearby tree. Fortunately when I turned around there wasn't any sign of that beast following me.

It took me around five minutes to recover. Just as my heart rate stabilized, a pain filled shriek covered the jungle, paralyzing me in the process.

It came from the south. My knees buckled at the thought of traveling in the same direction. I hurriedly moved in the opposite of the sound Heading north away from the shriek and definitely away from that monster. Following the noise would be my best option of finding out exactly where I am but that shout just now sounded like someone's last breath. Every movie, book I've ever seen or read tells me to go in the opposite direction!

Unfortunately, my humanity kicked in at the worst possible time. Damn it! What if they need help? My feet stopped almost involuntarily. What if they're stranded here just like me and were attacked by an animal? If the roles were reversed would I want someone to save me? It's not a stretch of the imagination to say, that shriek could have come from me just a few minutes ago had that thing given chase.

Despite my misgivings I turned and headed in the direction of the terrifying noise.
