Few more days had passed since Yami had concluded that he was more than able and powerful enough to become a demon slayer and officially join the Demon Slayer Corps. And thus, he needed to leave this village and the wilderness and embark on his new journey. The first step of this journey was the final selection, which happened at Mount Fujikasane, and then to officially become a demon slayer in the Demon Slayer Corps.
Yami was kneeling on the green grass in a field not far from his home. Three gravestones had been erected side by side—these were the graves of his parents and his elder sister.
Yami's eyes were wet, and tears rolled down his cheeks.
He mumbled in a low voice, "Mother… Father… Sister… I am leaving today."
"I doubt you would believe that," he added with a pained chuckle, "the little boy you once raised has grown so much stronger."
"If only you all had been alive…" Yami added with a sob.
"But I am not the only one who has gotten stronger in these past six months…" he continued. "My hatred for the demons has also gotten stronger… a lot stronger."
"I do not know if I am right or wrong in abhorring those pieces of scum… maybe I should feel compassion for the demons as Tanjiro did, or maybe I should consider them humanly as Kanae Kocho did."
"But I cannot bring myself to love the demons," Yami sighed. "And this probably is for the best."
"I am going to kill them all… every one of them," Yami said.
"To be honest, I do not want to feel compassion or pity towards these demons…" he continued. "I want to kill them all… to slaughter them."
Yami remained silent for the next few minutes as he knelt on both knees while staring at the graves of his family. A few minutes later, an expression of resolve formed on Yami's face.
"I vow in front of all of you," he said with a determined look. "I am going to get justice… get revenge for what those demons have done to you."
"They have destroyed my family… have taken away the source of happiness from my life," he resolved. "I am going to put an end to all their menace."
"I am going to make sure that none of them are left alive to break apart any other family," he added.
"I am going to exterminate them all," Yami vowed with a deep look on his face and tears in his eyes.
Although this appeared to be an insignificant moment, something which Yami did on a whim, the demons had no idea how much this simple vow was going to affect their lives. The future was going to prove that this moment, which seemed ordinary, had in reality been extraordinary—a moment which would be etched in the pages of history in golden letters.
With his vow and resolve, in front of the graves of his family, Yami returned to his small house. He settled all his belongings and locked the house with a lock, then immediately set forth on his journey.
. . .
He had his axe strapped to his back as he crossed the mountains surrounding his village and walked toward his destination—Mount Fujikasane. In these past six months, Yami had been able to gather some tidbits of information about the final selection and the location of Mount Fujikasane. All these tidbits of information, which Yami had acquired, came from demon slayers. Yami had encountered the demon slayers in the wilderness either when they were on patrol duty or were going or returning from missions. He had, until now, not encountered any other known character, except Kanae Kocho, whom he had met on the first day of his second life.
Mount Fujikasane was not very far from his village, and it would take Yami around a month of walking to reach it. And Yami had learned, from the information he had been able to collect, that the final selection was due in another 45 days.
As per Yami's planning, he would reach Mount Fujikasane 15 days earlier than the date of the final selection, where a new chapter of his life would begin.
