Three whole years have passed since I last saw my parents. I barely remembered what they looked like, what their voices sounded like. I forgot what my moms hugs felt like, but still longed for them. I often got memories of watching my dad cast spells, but that was all I remembered about him.
When I was ten, I was allowed to petition for my parents' search. Now the king had two petitioners asking for the same thing. Not that it mattered.
The old mage king had tragically passed away two years ago. The details of that incident are unknown, but the general theory is that he took his life. He had fallen into a great depression that he just couldn't pull himself out of.
The new mage king was a complete ass. He could care less about the people. The bastard even got the old throne demolished so he could have a new one made. And guess what it was made of. Pure flipping gold! The tax was higher than I'd ever seen, and I wasn't even paying bills!
"Denied." the Diamond king told my uncle. He didn't have the patience that the old king had. Rue tried to protest, but was dragged out of the throne room. I gulped. I was next in line and I was asking the same thing."What is a child doing in here? You can't be old enough to petition!"
The legal age to petition the king was normally 15. But if a kid had no parents, he or she could petition at the age of ten, as long as they had a guardian present.
"Where are your parents, boy?"
I inhaled, straightening up. "O' great mage king" I dropped into a deep bow. "I am the son of Ally and Remington Beydo. They… disappeared three years ago, leaving me with no parents. According to the law, I am allowed to petition when I reach the age of ten."
"This boy is well spoken. And well versed." the king muttered. Then aloud he said, "Please tell me you're not here to petition for me to send out a search party for them?"
I hesitated. "I can not lie to you my lord. That is exactly why I'm here."
The king groaned loudly. "Kid, get the hell out of my throne room. Your parents are dead or abandoned you. Get over it, and don't come back here again to waste my time." with a gesture, he commanded his mage knights to drag me away.
Outside the throne room, I flinched when the giant doors slammed. Uncle Rue looked at me. I shook my head.
