Chapter 3 - Hope is poison[1]

Drip drip

The sound blood echoed throughout the silent chamber.

I looked at the body of the swordsman I've been working with until now.

He was dead

All that met me were his cold lifeless eyes.

My eyes drifted to the person standing over him, the one who had killed him.

Aiden

I felt my knuckles whiten.

The person in question, calmly picked up the pendant out of the pool his victim's blood.

The bloody pendant reflected his cold eyes.

"W-why. Why did you kill him," Henry questioned, his voice shaking.

"He... He was our teamm-" He didn't get to finish his sentence as black dagger came flying at his face.

Shingg!

The dark dagger was deflected by a heavy war axe.

"Henry, focus!" Adam yelled as he got his axe into position.

But Aiden didn't give him time to recuperate as he already moving in to strike.

Adam swung his Axe toward the incoming traitor.

But Aiden proved to fast—he ducked below the strike and lunged for Henry's side.

But this time he was ready. He pulled out his sword with stunning speed and pushed Aiden back.

Not giving up pressure, Henry gave a swift diagonal slash toward the pale man.

Aiden deflected the blow but was pushed back a few meters due to the force.

"Don't forget about me." Bellowed Adam as he swung his axe horizontally with an immense amount of force.

Caught of guard, Aiden wasn't able to dodge and was forced to block the attack head on.

He skidded across the ground before flipping back into a standing position.

It might not have been visible but that blow must have done some damage.

"You okay, kiddo." Adam questioned without looking back.

Henry answered while wiping the sweat of his forehead "I'm okay."

Adam quickly glanced back at my direction. "You should leave Crow. This isn't a place for unawakened."

I clicked my tongue. "I know that. But this ruin doesn't seem to have any clear exits." I replied while looking around the mysterious ruins. All that was here were bookshelves, a desk and old stone walls.

We just appeared here out of nowhere. Where the hell am I supposed to run to? I should have never accepted a random person into the party. I'm such an idiot.

Well nothing I can do about it now. We can only fight to survive.

I silently cursed my luck as I turned towards my only options of survival.

"You two," They kept looking at the pale traitor but they're bodies shifted slightly so I could tell they were listening.

"I don't think that's all he had. He's gonna come at us with everything he's capable of now. He might be fast, but his power isn't that impressive. Make sure to cover each other and tire him out. I'll cover you. He can't keep fighting the 3 of us forever."

"Right"

"Got it, kid"

Our short exchange seems to have been enough for the pale man to recover from Adam's strike.

"He's coming!" Adam screamed.

Like a flash, the scrawny man dashed towards the duo at even faster speeds than before.

Henry took the initiative this time as he ran to meet him.

He slashed his sword diagonally downward once again.

Aiden being ready for it this time, deflected the blow downward and spun around, aiming straight for Henry's throat.

Within a split second Henry ducked avoiding the lethal blow but took a kick straight in the abdomen.

Coming to Henry's rescue once again was Adam as he swung his axe from below trying to catch the assassin moving.

Aiden jumped back and wanted to retaliate but just as he wanted to swing against the tanned giant—a familiar black dagger came flying at him.

'That kid' His eyes zoned in on the black haired youth in the back of the chamber.

He deflected the knife with relative ease but failed to see the young knight coming from behind.

Henry exhaled loudly as a blue veil covered his body once again.

For the first time in the fight, Aiden's expression changed from relaxed to worried.

With a burst of speed Henry's sword closed in on his shoulder.

Using all of his might the assassin pushed his dagger in front of the swords trajectory blocking it but breaking his clavicle in the process.

As the pale man hit the ground, he felt a mighty presence above him.

"You can't dodge now." said Adam as he dropped his battle axe from the sky.

Scrambling to get his dagger, he realized that he had dropped it when he got hit in the shoulder.

Finally desperation set into his face as the mighty axe fell into his chest, creating a diagonal cut form his left shoulder to his right hip.

Silence

All that was heard were the heavy pants from the duo and blood dripping onto the cold floor.

"We... We got him, right" Said Henry, not willing to let down his guard.

"I think we did, smiley," replied Adam as both looked in the direction of the rugged young man who threw the dagger to distract the enemy.

'Those two did it. They killed Aiden. And I helped.'

It felt a little weird being relieved after killing a person. But this was warranted.

After all, he tried to kill us for a pendant. An expensive one but still.

I returned my focus back to the two awakened.

I saw Henry looking somewhat uncomfortable. Because he killed someone? Maybe.

I turned to Adam who was looking over his- our old teammate with a wistful expression.

I slowly made my way toward him.

"We... should take his body back after we figure out how we're leaving this place," I said while patting his back.

Realizing we were still stuck here he nodded his head. "Give me a minute, I'll be right there."

I nodded my head and moved toward the corpse of the traitor,

Aiden

He had a heavy cut spanning his entire torso. No human could survive such a blow. Not even an awakened. Of this level at least.

I picked up the shiny pendant next to his corpse and observe it closely. There seemed to be something off about this pendant. As if it was more than just some jewelry. As if it was--

"KAELITH!"

A chill ran down my spine as I heard Henry shouting my name full of terror. Before I could turn around something sharp slammed into my side—and the scent of metal reached my nostrils.

'Ah'

I should have never let my guard down
