Chapter 4 - Chapter 4:New friendship

The school bell rang with its usual loud clang, signaling the end of yet another hectic day at Jewel Girls High School Junior. Rita, usually quick to dart out the door and make her way home, was caught off guard today. There was Anne, the head girl, casually waiting for her at the school gate. Evelyn stays in the hostel.

Rita blinked twice. Is she... waiting for me? Or her friend mufti

"Rita!" Anne called out, her bright smile lighting up the dusty school compound.

Rita stood frozen for a second, blinking rapidly. She couldn't believe it. "Uhm... Anne?" she asked cautiously, trying to sound confident, even though she was battling a knot of nerves in her stomach.

Anne laughed softly, her laughter like the tinkling of chimes in the distance. "Yeah, I know, it's unusual. But I thought we could walk home together today, you know, get to know each other a bit more. We shouldn't be stranger anymore by tomorrow"

Rita's jaw nearly hit the ground. Her mind was still struggling to process this. Anne, the epitome of grace and perfection, was asking her to walk home? The same Anne she had been dreading to share a class with?

"Uhh... sure! Why not?" Rita said, shrugging, her voice higher than normal. What was the worst that could happen? Maybe Anne wasn't as scary as I thought... or maybe she was going to critique everything about my life.

As they walked side by side, the warm afternoon sun glowed over the small, tree-lined street. The wind was cool, ruffling their hair every now and then. Rita found herself sneaking glances at Anne, who looked effortlessly put together as usual.

"So, how's life as the head girl?" Rita asked, trying to start a casual conversation.

Anne smiled, the corner of her lips tilting up in a way that made Rita feel like she was in the presence of someone too poised to ever have a bad hair day. "It's not as glamorous as it seems, trust me. It's all meetings and extra work, but someone's got to keep the school running, right?"

Rita let out a small laugh, trying to suppress the urge to ask more about Anne's perfect life. "Well, you've certainly got the whole 'perfect student' thing going on."

Anne rolled her eyes playfully. "I don't think perfection is my middle name, but I guess I've mastered the art of pretending."

They walked in silence for a few moments, the sound of their footsteps crunching the gravel beneath them filling the space. Rita wasn't sure if she was more nervous about the awkward silence or the fact that she was walking next to the Anne she had feared.

Out of nowhere, Anne spoke up again. "You know, Rita, I've been meaning to ask. What's the deal with you and Evelyn? You two are like peas in a pod."

This time facing Rita.

Rita, caught off guard by the question, quickly turned to Anne, a slight flush creeping onto her cheeks. "Oh, Evelyn? She's... well, she's my best friend. We've been inseparable since, like, forever." Rita chuckled nervously. "She's, uh, the chaotic one, and I'm... well, I guess I'm the one who tries to keep her in check."

Anne's eyes twinkled with amusement. "Sounds like you two are a fun duo. Maybe I should hang out with you guys more often. You know, learn how to... be less serious."

Rita let out a snort of laughter before she could stop herself. "Oh yeah, because I'm really the one to teach you how to be not serious."

Anne grinned. "Fair enough. But hey, it's a nice change, isn't it? Sometimes, school can feel like a pressure cooker, and we need a little humor to survive."

Rita nodded enthusiastically. "Absolutely! And, speaking of humor, have you noticed how the teachers sometimes treat us like we're in a spy movie? You know, acting all mysterious like we're secretly plotting world domination?"

Anne giggled. "I know right? It's like they think we have secret underground tunnels beneath the school or something. I swear, if anyone's got a secret plan, it's probably the librarian who knows all our secrets."

Rita burst out laughing at the thought. "That's true! Mrs. Olamide? She's probably writing a tell-all book about us right now."

As they continued their walk, the conversation flowed naturally, with laughter echoing through the quiet streets. By the time they reached Rita's street, she was surprised at how easy it had been to talk to Anne. The girl who had once seemed so untouchable now felt... well, almost like a normal person.

"Well, this is my stop," Rita said as they reached her house, a little sad that the conversation was ending. "I had a lot of fun. I didn't expect us to actually have this much in common."

Anne raised an eyebrow, a teasing smile playing on her lips. "You didn't expect to enjoy hanging out with the head girl? I'm not that boring, am I?"

Rita grinned. "Maybe just a little," she teased back. "But don't worry, I won't tell anyone."

Anne winked. "I'm holding you to that."

Before Rita could reply, Anne turned and started walking back in the direction they had come from. Rita watched her go, a little amazed at how different things felt. What had started as an awkward moment had turned into a pleasant, almost fun, conversation. Maybe—just maybe—Anne wasn't so bad after all.

As Rita walked up to her door, she felt a strange sense of satisfaction. Maybe high school wasn't going to be as terrifying as she'd once thought.

And maybe, just maybe, the unexpected friendship she had with Anne was about to turn into something even more surprising.

Falling to her bed ,she drifted into sleep.

Later that evening, as the sun began to set and the house grew quieter, Rita sat down on her bed, feeling a sense of calm wash over her. She opened her diary and grabbed her pen, reflecting on the day.

*"Dear Diary,*

Today was... unexpected. Evelyn caught up with me on the way to school, and we had a pretty funny moment talking about the new class arrangements. But then, everything changed when I saw my name on the list, and then I saw Anne's name right there, too. How did I feel about it? I can't say I'm completely happy... but it is what it is. I'm a little nervous. I mean, Anne is the head girl for a reason, right? She's brilliant.

But it's also a new chapter. I'll get to know her better, and maybe—just maybe—this year won't be as scary as I thought.

Anyway, I've got to rest up for tomorrow. I'm excited, but also a little scared. I just hope the new class is a good experience.

Goodnight, Rita. Let's make this last year of Junior High count."

Rita closed her diary with a sigh, her heart still beating fast at the thought of the changes ahead. Tomorrow was another day, and she was ready for it—come what may.

This chapter now includes a more detailed and introspective conclusion with Rita writing in her diary, adding depth to her character and emotions. It also keeps the humor and lightheartedness that make her relatable and engaging.
