Chapter 5 - Atrocitus

(Hal POV)

"... removing the air from his lungs was a simple solution. Without it, his telekinetic brain had no choice but to shut down. Not bad thinking. I noticed that you weren't affected by his telepathy, even before you had your ring on. That is a strong will you have. That's good, it will serve you well.", Sinestro says.

"Thank you for the compliment.", I say as we fly into the desert, where Abin Sur crashed.

"What did they teach you?"

"Kilowog taught me how to ring sling, among other things."

"Poorly."

"Salaak had me test the charging limitations, which I am unhappy about."

"Salaak's 'tests' are worthless when faced with the reality of a 'dead' ring.", Sinestro says, confirming my thoughts exactly.

"And everyone warned me about the yellow impurity. No one could tell me what that is or why it's there, of course."

"Hm."

"What?"

"I have been attempting to seek the truth about the yellow impurity for years. I was suspended after accusing the Guardians of putting it there themselves when I was a rookie.", Sinestro tells me.

"I have concluded that the colour yellow must represent an emotion, just like green seems to represent the emotional spectrum of will. Yellow probably also represents something like that. And if I had to guess, I would say it is ..."

"What?! What do you think?" Sinestro has stopped flying and looks at me.

"Fear."

"Fear?"

"Yes. It makes sense. Fear is the weakness of will. If you are afraid, your willpower will be weaker and therefore create an impurity or weakness for Green Lanterns."

"... That is quite a clever theory. We will have to dig deeper for that.", Sinestro says.

.

"Did you know, Abin Sur?" I ask Sinestro.

"Abin Sur was my mentor. I suppose I questioned him and disrespected him as much as you do me. He showed me how to temper that. And why it was necessary for a member of the Green Lantern Corps."

"I didn't disrespect you, though."

"I am an individualistic thinker, as you are. I'd never belonged to a group like the Corps before. so I had never learned how to trust the beings around me. In part, that's where my questioning came from. Abin Sur helped me learn to trust my fellow Corpsman. thankfully, it didn't change my drive to seek the truth or my determination to argue against the theologies I disagree with.", Sinestro says, ignoring my comment.

"I see. How about that message then?"

"Yes."

[Sinestro. Green Lantern 1417 registered in the direct vicinity. Message 22 unlocked.]

[Message ready.]

A green hologram of Abin Sur appears from my ring.

{Greetings, Sinestro. My friend. I realise I have not been as righteous and effective an officer as you have been of late. But this teacher fears not being surpassed by his student. Your success is all I hope for, Sinestro.

I have learned the secrets of life. And to understand the severity of my mission is to understand the greatest tragedy that has ever befallen the universe. A crime so horrendous and unfathomable, it is a myth.

Long before the Guardians of the Universe recruited sentient life forms into the Green Lantern Corps, they created a different police force. One they believed would never be manipulated by emotion. The Guardians saw emotion as a weakness in intelligent life.

They constructed thousands of artificial soldiers. Manhunters. They dispatched them across the universe to maintain order. And for aeons, they did just that. Until the massacre.

The massacre of Triple 6.

It happened in an instant. A glitch was triggered. Accidentally or with purpose, within the Manhunters. They came to the conclusion that there could only be order in our universe if life were eradicated. They annihilated world after world. Trillions of intelligent beings.

There were only five survivors. Five within an entire Sector, once full of life.

Those five became known as the Five Inversions. A terrorist cell bent on the destruction of the Guardians of the Universe. Chief among them, Atrocitus. Along with Quill, they sought the inner powers of the Universe. With their rituals and sacrifices, they peered into the deepest depths of the future. And they saw darkness.

A black so devoid of life that even the Guardians' light could not penetrate it. They seek to take this darkness for themselves and turn it against us.

It was foretold that power would be found on Earth. I know you do not believe these prophecies, Sinestro, nor do the Guardians. But I ask, in the name of our friendship, trust me.

You must stop them from unleashing this darkness. It will destroy the Universe.}

.

The message finished.

"When you spoke to Abin Sur, did you see another boy?"

"No. Abin Sur was the only one I saw in the ship. Do you think he got his wounds from a fight and not from the crash?"

"Yes. Atrocitus survived. We have to find him."

.

.

We reach the graveyard that the ring told us about and see a red monster attacking a young man.

"William Hand. Your insides hold the doorway to absolute darkness."

"Atrocitus.", Sinestro says, announcing our presence, "You are under arrest."

Sinestro binds Atrocitus in chains and tries to restrict his movement.

"Green Lanterns. You are as guilty as your masters."

"Feel my rage!" he screams and breaks the chains. He hits me with his claws, and I am shot backwards. I land next to William Hand, who I know will play an important role in the future.

"Run, kid! Get out of here.", I tell him and help him stand up. I also stand back up and prepare to face Atrocitus when the ring warns me of something.

[Warning. Power levels are depleting. Power Levels at 38.7%]

I use my willpower, and immediately, the draining effect stops.

"He's built a cosmic divining rod. It can locate power ... and take it away.", Sinestro says. However, I am not greatly affected, as I have forcefully stopped the draining effect using my willpower.

"Get on-"

*VROOOOM*

Atrocitus aims his divining rod at us and fires a beam of green energy towards us. I create a shield for both me and Sinestro and block the attack. I not only block the energy attack but channel it and use it for my next attack.

Just like when I was fighting Ke'haan on Oa, the shield changes form. But this time, not to a canon. Instead, it transforms into a giant laser. The absorbed energy from the divining rod lights up, and I fire it towards Atrocitus, adding my own power as well.

*VRRROOOOOOOOOMMM*

*BOOOOM*

"Raaaaghh! How do you still have your ring, Lantern?" Atrocitus asks after my attack nearly blows a hole through his body.

He aims the divining rod towards me again and fires two blasts of energy in quick succession. I create a wall in front of me, but I add the properties of rubber and gum to it. So basically bungee-gum.

The energy attacks impact the wall, and large dents become visible as the energy continues to dent the wall more deeply. But before it can reach my face, it stops. In the next moment, the direction changes, and the energy blasts shoot back with double the speed they came.

!!!

*BBOOOOOOOOMM*

"RRAAAAAAAHHHH", Atrocitus screams as his body is shot back by the explosion. I could see the confusion on his face. I always thought that a lot of Lantern fights lacked imagination. You could create ANYTHING, and you create a train to attack? I understand futuristic Guns and rockets, but there must be more than trains you can think of.

"Sinestro, recharge your ring. I'll keep the red hulk busy.", I say and then walk towards Atrocitus, who is slowly standing back up. I think of something that fits the situation in my opinion. My body begins to swell up, and my suit changes form.

My eyes and face started to turn green, and all of my skin also turned green. My body and muscles started to grow enormously. My mask popped off, and the straps on his legs, body, and arms changed to fit my new form. As I arrived in front of Atrocitus, not Hal Jordan stood in front of him, but the Hulk.

[Picture]

Unlike the Hulk, though, I don't function on anger, but will. I imagined having the body and power of the Hulk with his ever-growing strength the longer the fight takes. I also added another interesting property to my physical body. I got this from the Manga: Dragon Ball. GoD Vegita has the ability to grow stronger the more damage he receives. And that is just a good ability to have.

I don't know exactly how I did this, but my willpower is just overpowered, and with it, I got this. Let's put it to the test.

*Crack*

I cracked my neck and pulled my fist back. I tower over Atrocitus now and inhale. Then, with about 10% of my maximum power- my physical power, not willpower, mind you- I exhale and punch Atrocitus, who is in a daze for some reason.

*BOOOOOOM*

Atrocitus shoots back like a rocket and smashes into an excavator. In a typical Hulk-like fashion, I jump into the air and descend with my legs outstretched. My goal is to smash into Atrocitus while he is still down. However, the red monster is not yet fully tapped out. He manages to get out of the way by a hair's breadth.

*BOOOM*

Atrocitus fires the cosmic divining rod at me, and I let it hit me. I can feel it, but it does nothing. There is some smoke, but I only smirk at him and then attack again. I punch towards him, but he dodges and grabs the yellow excavator. Using his impressive strength, he smashes it on my body.

*BOOOOM*

...

!!!

"Yellow ... that is not ... possible," Atrocitus says after he sees me holding onto the broken yellow pieces of the excavator and throwing them away.

I take a powerful step forward and appear before him. I pull back my fist and punch him.

*BOOM*

I hold his body before it can fly away and punch him again.

*BOOM*

An attack to the liver follows and then an uppercut to his face.

*BOOM*

I create a structure that takes Atrocitus and hangs him upside down, simulating a punching back for me to use.

*BOOM*

*BOOM*

*BOOM*

Left hooks, right hooks, uppercuts, jabs and crosses ... all sorts of attacks rain down on Atrocitus. He is bleeding all over his body. His bones are all broken, and his teeth, which get on my nerves, are not all there anymore. With a final powerful punch, he is shot back and is knocked out for good.

(3rd Person POV)

Sinestro watched as Hal walked towards Atrocitus with only roughly 30% of his power remaining in his ring. He wanted to stop him, but something made him observe the young human. He didn't know what it was, but he felt that during this entire time, they had known each other; the human was in perfect control.

It hadn't occurred to him before, but now that he was watching closely, he could see it. Hal Jordan was a powerful Green Lantern already, and he would only grow from here. His willpower rivalled some of the greatest out there.

He watched as the peculiar transformation occurred to Hal, and he became jacked up, transforming into the Hulk. There was nothing he had ever seen like it. Normally, Green Lanterns create armours or giant figures, but he has never seen someone who transforms himself into such a form. Such power, such physical power, should not be possible.

And the change wasn't permanent. He watched Hal pummel Atrocitus and treat him like a child. And then ... he returned to his normal form.

"Impressive...", Sinestro says.

"Thank you."

[Time allotment exceeded. Ilegal fraternising between officers registered.]

[Lantern 1417 and Lantern 2814]

[You have disobeyed our territorial edict. You will report to Oa for immediate discipline.]

Both of their rings said at the same time, notifying them that they were going to be brought before the Guardians for disciplinary actions.
