Chapter 15 - Chapter 15

The academy grounds were unusually quiet that afternoon, the usual hum of eager training replaced by a strange sense of tension that hung in the air. The students, including Aiden and Riko, gathered in small clusters, preparing for the next phase of their training. The air felt thick, as if the calm before a storm had settled over them. Aiden stood at the edge of the training field, his mind still occupied by the black holes he'd struggled to control earlier.

"Hey," Riko's voice broke through his thoughts, pulling his attention away from the swirling voids he still saw in his mind.

"Yeah?" Aiden turned to face his friend, his eyes betraying the fatigue that had begun to set in after his relentless training sessions. The black holes weren't easy to control—especially when he was trying to push himself beyond his limits.

"You've been quiet today," Riko said, stepping closer. He raised an eyebrow, sensing Aiden's inner turmoil. "Not like you. You're always talking about your next big breakthrough."

Aiden shrugged, his gaze drifting to the horizon, where the sky was painted with the golden hues of the late afternoon sun. "I don't know, man. I feel like I'm hitting a wall. I've been trying to control multiple black holes at once, and it's just... it's just not coming together. Every time I think I've got it, it slips right through my fingers."

Riko could see the frustration in Aiden's posture. His shoulders were tense, his jaw clenched, as if the weight of his own expectations was starting to suffocate him.

"Listen," Riko began, his tone softer now. "You're pushing yourself too hard. It's like you're trying to leap straight to the top without realizing that the climb itself is part of the journey. You're not going to master it in a single day."

Aiden turned to face Riko fully, a wry smile tugging at his lips, though it didn't quite reach his eyes. "You're right. But I feel like I have to get it right. There's no time to waste."

Riko's eyes softened. "I get it. But you can't force it. You'll break before the power ever does. Just... take a step back. Give yourself some time to breathe. You're already so far ahead of where you started. And you're not in this alone."

Aiden stood there for a long moment, his eyes fixed on the ground, the weight of his friend's words sinking in. It was hard to slow down, hard to admit that he couldn't always control everything. But deep down, Aiden knew Riko was right. The pressure he'd been putting on himself was only making things harder. He needed to learn how to trust in his progress—how to give himself permission to fail, and then try again.

A sudden voice broke through the silence, and both of them turned. A small group of students from another academy were approaching, led by a familiar face. Kai, a skilled combatant with lightning-fast reflexes, flashed them a grin as he walked up to the pair.

"Well, well," Kai said, his gaze flicking between Aiden and Riko, "looks like you two are deep in thought. Plotting your next moves, I assume?"

Riko chuckled, but Aiden didn't seem amused. "Just... thinking about my training. Not sure where to go from here."

Kai raised an eyebrow. "Still stuck on the black holes, huh?"

Aiden nodded, though his expression was more resigned than frustrated. "Yeah. It's like every time I think I'm making progress, I lose control. It's frustrating."

Kai's grin softened, and he shrugged. "You're not the only one. Everyone's dealing with their own demons. We all hit a wall at some point. But let me tell you something—it's not about controlling everything. Sometimes, it's about letting go."

Riko tilted his head in confusion. "Letting go?"

Kai nodded, his tone turning serious. "Yeah. If you hold on too tight, you'll break what you're holding. But if you learn how to work with it, instead of forcing it into something it's not, then that's when the real power comes through. It's about finding that balance."

Aiden absorbed the words in silence, his mind swirling with the implications of what Kai had said. Was he trying too hard? Was the key to unlocking his full potential not about forcing his powers into submission, but about accepting them for what they were?

The thought lingered, but before Aiden could voice his questions, a sharp whistle sliced through the air. The students' heads turned to see Instructor Halston, their mentor, standing at the edge of the training field, a stern expression on his face.

"Gather up!" Halston called, his voice cutting through the air with authority. "We've got a special assignment today."

Riko's eyes narrowed with curiosity, but Aiden's thoughts were elsewhere. He wasn't sure he was ready for any more surprises today, but as always, there was no avoiding it. He and Riko exchanged a look, and both of them knew that whatever was coming next, they would face it together.

The students gathered, forming a loose circle around their instructor. Halston's eyes scanned the group, his usual stern expression softening just a fraction.

"We're going to test your progress in a more real-world scenario today," he said, his voice steady. "There are reports of a localized breach along the outskirts of the city. A few... creatures have found their way into our territory. We need to see how well you can handle yourselves under pressure."

Aiden's heart skipped a beat, and Riko's gaze hardened. The idea of facing creatures—of being tested outside the controlled safety of the academy—was both exhilarating and terrifying. But it was also exactly what they needed.

"Get ready," Halston continued, "we leave in thirty minutes. Prepare yourself."

The group disbanded, and Aiden turned to Riko, his face set with determination. "This is it, huh?"

Riko nodded, his eyes shining with the same fire Aiden felt burning inside of him. "Yeah. Time to see if we're really ready."

Aiden glanced back at the swirling black holes in the distance, still lingering in his thoughts. He knew his powers weren't fully under control, but maybe that was okay. Maybe, just maybe, he'd learn to let go and let the black holes do what they did best—control the chaos around him.

As he and Riko prepared for the mission ahead, they both knew that this was just the beginning. The world outside the academy was waiting, and the storm they were about to face would challenge them in ways they couldn't even begin to imagine.

But Aiden wasn't worried anymore.

He was ready.
