Chapter 7 - chapter 7: Moon

Moon

In a small Chinese-style sanctuary, made of black stone and measuring about ten square meters, stood a young man. Thoya, his legs crossed on a small rectangular stone platform, sat surrounded by carvings of ancient gods and monsters decorating its surface and sides.

His build, bulky yet smaller than his father's, was upright, eyes closed. His demeanor resembled that of a monk, or an immortal, like those he had seen in the media while traveling across China in search of legendary martial arts techniques.

Well, he found them — but it was a real pain, especially with that old madman…

BEEP

BEEP

The sound of a ringtone, coming from an electronic alarm clock flashing "7:30 PM".

He opened his deep black eyes and gazed at the Earth, directly in front of him. Earth, now three-quarters cloaked in night, its cities lit up by glowing lights, connected by others like pulsing veins.

Thoya stared at that sphere of soil and water — the planet where he was born and raised — with detachment, as if it meant nothing to him.

As a child, he had sworn to protect it, but it was always the same story: fight, win, kill, triumph, fight, kill...

His childlike eyes, once full of purity and shining like stars, had slowly dimmed, like the final flicker of a candle as it fades.

Flashback

Thoya, 7 years old, hovered in the air with his father — Omniman — in full superhero costume, wearing a heavy expression... yet a faint smile.

Thoya tugged a bit at his collar and looked up at his father with excitement. His father had told him to wear this tight white suit with grey accents, saying it was an important day.

"Dad! What are we doing today, huh? You taught me to fly yesterday, that was awesome! What now?!"Thoya moved around his father effortlessly, as if he'd always known how to fly, even though he had only learned the day before. He stopped in front of Nolan, bouncing in the air, waiting eagerly for an answer.

"Of course, my son. Today is a big day. You awakened your powers at the age of five — earlier than your brother. But I always told you to never speak of it to anyone, remember?"Nolan floated in the air, hands behind his back, looking down at his son. The clouds below drifted slowly in the wind, just like his cape behind him.

"I listened to you!"Thoya puffed out his little chest with pride, showing he had followed his father's instructions."But why is everything so fragile? Even stuff... it's all so fragile. I broke my bedroom door handle again yesterday."Thoya realized he shouldn't have said that aloud. He quickly put his hands over his mouth, starting to sweat, and glanced nervously at his father, about to make up a lie, but a hand gently landed on his head and began stroking his hair.

"It's normal, Thoya. You're a Viltrumite. You have strength, speed, and resilience among the highest in the universe. You're a god to them. One wrong move, and you could kill a human."Nolan continued to run his fingers through his son's hair with a comforting smile.

"Hmmm! I get it."Thoya raised his little fist and began mimicking boxing moves, mumbling to himself about being careful with the weak and fighting bad guys.

He stopped. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed birds flying in a triangular formation about a hundred meters away.

He watched the migratory birds with childish curiosity, six of them grouped like a family, heading toward a more favorable climate.

Omniman turned toward them too, a determined look on his face. He took a deep breath and, in an instant, reappeared holding one of the birds by its neck.

So fast!

Thoya had only blinked… and his father was already back with a new... friend?

Thoya tilted his head and looked up at his father, silently asking why he had done that.

"Yesterday I taught you to fly. Today, I'll teach you to…

…kill."

Nolan gazed at his son — his heir — the one who would someday carry on his mission to conquer planets, one after another, as he had done for the Viltrumite Empire. For Viltrumites, it wasn't a choice — it was a necessity. He ignored the small flicker of resistance glinting in his eyes as he extended the animal toward his son.

Thoya floated backward, his hands trembling, sweat forming on his back. He looked at his father with fear as he saw him holding out the beautiful bird.

"N-No… why do we have to kill it, Dad?"Thoya floated a little further away, but stopped when he saw his father simply holding out his arm, not advancing.

"Thoya… remind me — what species are you?"Nolan's voice was stern.

"I-I'm huma—"Thoya froze. He saw something on his father's face — an expression he had never seen before. His throat dried out, sweat soaking his hands and back. It was as if his body resented him for saying those words.

"I-I'm a V-Viltrumite… haa… haa…"Thoya didn't know why he struggled to say it. Maybe it was because he had seen more humans than Viltrumites in his life — aside from his father and maybe his brother. Maybe it was because his mother was human.Or maybe… because admitting he was a Viltrumite meant he would soon see humans as mere animals...

Thoya looked down at the bird in his small hands. It was a beautiful creature, white-feathered, glowing under the afternoon sun.

"You must kill this creature now, Thoya. A Viltrumite must know how to follow orders from his superiors! Kill it now!"Nolan shouted, his posture strict. Fear and panic filled his son's eyes.

"YOU MUST KILL!""I-I can't—""KILL!""KILL!""KILL!"

Thoya's breathing grew more and more erratic, his throat tightening...

...and so did the bird's.

"KILL!!!"

*Crack*

End of Flashback

*Crack*

Thoya rose from the stone platform where he had been sitting for hours. He picked up a shimmering aqua-blue stone, about the size of a palm, from a plate beside him. He crushed it into powder with one hand and inhaled the dust.

"Mhhmmmm… A real delight. Shame the planet that made these didn't want to give me more."

Thoya tilted his head back, eyes closed, savoring the sensation. A thin blue trail spread beneath his nose as he inhaled the space-born "dust" once more.

He grabbed another of the stones, took a stance, pulled his arm back, and launched it into the distance, without even checking the direction.

Seconds later, tiny pebbles around him began to tremble. Then came a sound, deep and haunting, like the call of a whale. A projectile the size of a small car came hurtling straight toward Thoya.

Floating midair, Thoya turned to face the incoming rock. He delivered a karate strike that split the rock clean in two. The halves crashed into the lunar surface, sending debris and dust flying in every direction.

"Hahaha! Still playful, that one."

A smile a rare one, barely seen since he began his Viltrumite training with his father, crept onto his face.

Thoya shook his head and flew off toward Earth, leaving behind one of his few true sanctuaries in this vast universe.

His home, The Moon.
