Nora's pov
Leaves crunched beneath my feet as I sprinted away. The cool night breeze fanned my face, drying all traces of tears. My breath came out in ragged gasps and my heart pounded loudly in my chest. I dodged the low hanging branches as I delved deeper into the forest. I had no idea where I was headed all I knew was I had to keep going.
"Danger lurks just around the corner" my mum's voice rang in my ear once more. My eyes darted from side to side as I took in the dense foilage, try as I might I just couldn't shake off the icy fear which coursed within me.
A twig snapped behind me alerting me of a presence. I stilled and took in my surroundings, wondering if I actually heard a sound or if it was a figment of my imagination.
"She couldn't have gotten far" Selene's unmistakable voice rings out not too far from where I am.
I tried to calm my racing heart as I darted behind a tree, taking cover so as not to be discovered by them.
"She might already be gone mum, she's not worth the time" Cassian replied.
I placed a hand over my mouth, scared that my heavy breathing would reveal my presence.
"Alpha Damien did not stick to the plan. The plan was to kill her, not to exile her" she complained as I tried to stifle a gasp.
"She's gone that's all that matters" he retorted.
"What about the prophesy?" She asked him.
"She doesn't know about the prophesy. Nobody knows about the prophesy except you and I and as long as it remains that way we won't have any problems. Besides, she doesn't know how to live as a rogue, she'll eventually get killed" he explained.
"I don't like leaving anything to chance" Selene muttered after a moment, her voice drew nearer to where I was hiding.
"Nora I can hear your little pounding heart" she whispered as I heard the crunch of leaves beneath her feet.
Tears prickled the back of my eyes in anticipation, knowing there was no way I would outrun them.
"Nora I'm sorry it has to come to this but you are in the path of our destiny. I don't know why the moon goddess chose you of all people but what has to be done, has to be done." she continued, her voice right in front of the tree.
My eyes darted around, looking for anything I could possibly use to protect myself but all I saw was a helpless branch and some stones that would barely leave them with a scratch.
"I'll give you till three to come out. One-" she began but I cut her off by springing out from my hiding place and slamming a rock right into her face before I take off in the opposite direction, ignoring her howl of pain and string of curses.
"Don't just stand there get her" she shrieked.
I ran as fast as my legs could carry me, the green foilage passing before me in a blur as adrenaline pumped through me.
I ignored the scratches and scrapes I got from branches, my only thought was to find a way to live.
Just as I was about to grab a branch for support a hard body rammed into me, sending me rolling unto the floor with a loud huff. It was then it hit me, the unmistakable stench of rogues.
'Could this day get any worse?' I silently asked myself as I tried to pick myself off the floor, ignoring my aching bones.
"The rogues are sure to kill her, let's go" I heard Selene's voice in the distance and I knew she and Cassian had left me for dead. The only family I thought I had had not only left me for dead but tried to kill me themselves.
So many emotions surged through me but before I had a chance to identify them a growl brought me out of my thoughts. It was then I noticed the red eyes lurking in the shadows, the menacing growls surrounding me and the constant snapping of twigs that seems to be getting closer.
"Stay back" I cried desperately, holding up the flimsy branch in my hand.
I stared at the first wolf in fear as it prowled closer to me, baring it's teeth threateningly.
I gulped as I summoned courage and I shakily stood on my feet.
"Just let me go" a sob raked through me. I slowly stumbled back, hoping they wouldn't give chase but the menacing growl told me otherwise.
As the first wolf prowled towards me, I gripped the branch with both hands and held on as though my life depended on it.
I waited in anticipation and when the wolf lunged at me with it's jaw wide open, I swung the branch with wild desperation, enjoying the satisfying sound of wood meeting flesh as it fell onto the floor and whimpered.
Without lingering on my momentary victory, I bolted into a sprint once more but I could hardly make it anywhere before claws sank into my ribs.
I screamed in pain as my legs gave out and I clutched my now bleeding side with my hands.
The wolves circled me, their crazed eyes wide in excitement as though they couldn't wait to get a taste of me. My heart slammed against my chest so hard I was scared it would leap out of me.
'This was it, this was the end for me' With resignation, I allowed the tears to freely flow down my cheeks.
I closed my eyes in fear as a wolf leaped towards me, it's canines on full display. It, however, never made it to me as I hear a loud thud before a whimper followed.
My eyes flew open and I stared at a huge black wolf standing threateningly in front of me. From the familiar stench it was obvious this was also a rogue but there was a queer scent laced around him which I couldn't place. He was magnificent and everything about him screamed power and command.
He growled and the other wolves bowed to him and bore their necks in submission to him. I gasped as I realized he was the rogue King, a wolf whispered about around the pack, stories of his ruthlessness told to scare children and here I was, standing right behind him.
He slowly turned towards me and his big black orbs met mine for a second before I lost consciousness.
