Chapter 9 - She's Innocent

Gu Kai's Office

The rich aroma of coffee intermingled with the delicate fragrance of tea, quickly pervading the entire office.

In a genuine leather sofa, Gu Kai leaned forward, his long, fair fingers caressing the rim of a cherished jade tea cup, while his scrutinizing gaze fixed on his friend seated opposite—a friend whose languid expression he found hard to believe. The man, who normally shunned any closeness with women, had just admitted that he felt no aversion toward Wen Ran!

This news was so shocking that Gu Kai could hardly believe it.

After a long moment, he took a deep breath to reconfirm what he had just heard:

"Xiuchen, you really aren't repulsed by Wen Ran? But tell me—how do you know? Have you held hands, kissed, or even gone all the way?"

Mo Xiuchen's eyes flashed icily as he swept his gaze toward him. He picked up the coffee in front of him, took a sip, and after setting it down, replied coolly, "Everyone in G City knows that I, Mo Xiuchen, am 'incapable' in bed!"

Gu Kai's mouth twitched as he pointed out without a trace of sympathy, "If it weren't for your help, how could those rumors have turned out so 'real'?"

A trace of coldness flickered in Mo Xiuchen's eyes; at that time, circumstances forced him to become the one who spread the rumors.

Sensing the chill emanating from him, Gu Kai sighed softly and said with heartfelt emotion,

"I used to think that you would always be that little girl from back then. Who would have guessed that in the blink of an eye you would marry someone else? Honestly, I don't agree with what you're doing—Wen Ran is innocent."

Back then, Mo Xiuchen had indeed come dangerously close to something...

"And when did you become so motherly?" Gu Kai asked, not ready to let it go.

Mo Xiuchen's eyes suddenly narrowed, his gaze piercing as he fixed on Gu Kai. Uncomfortable under that scrutiny, Gu Kai forced a smile and said, "I speak out of a doctor's heart—I can't stand to see innocent people dragged into this mess."

"I'm just helping her!" Mo Xiuchen retorted, his aura of coldness receding as he reclined back on the sofa. He explained lazily, pausing for a second before adding,

"She lost her parents all at once, and when Wen Zixuan betrayed her at the time when she was most helpless, and with the Wen family beset by internal and external troubles, a girl who had just stepped out of the ivory tower would be torn apart in no time if no one protected her!"

His words were not exaggerations at all. In that terrible car accident, Wen Ran's parents died; her brother, who tried to protect her, ended up in a coma and could die at any moment. And with so many people eyeing the Wen family hungrily, there was no way a small girl like her could cope alone.

Gu Kai frowned, thought for a moment, then persisted, "But if you find that little girl from back then, what about Wen Ran?"

A deep, wistful look clouded Mo Xiuchen's eyes. His thin lips pressed into a determined line. He hardly remembered what that little girl looked like—only that her voice was beautiful and that she once mentioned having a mole on her chin...

It wasn't just him searching for that little girl; Gu Kai was too—because his lost sister also had a mole on her chin.

Half an hour later, Wen Ran emerged from the ICU, her eyes red and swollen.

Her features still bore traces of unspeakable sorrow, but her clear, luminous eyes—like sparkling stars—now shone with determination and strength.

Noticing her swollen, red eyes, Mo Xiuchen frowned in displeasure, "You were crying in there for half an hour?"

Had she not cried for so long as to make her eyes like that?

Wen Ran pursed her lips and avoided his piercing gaze, replying coldly, "No, I was just talking with my brother in the ward."

"If you keep making yourself look like this every time, then you'd better not come to the hospital in the future," Mo Xiuchen snapped coldly, then turned and walked away.
