Nathan's POV
"Father, where is Derrick…" a five-year-old me was asking my father for the hundredth time. I was confused about why we were now in Derrick's home and why we were seated in their dining room, eating breakfast, but I hadn't seen Derrick or his parents.
My father, clearly annoyed, grunted. "Nathan, Derrick and his parents are no longer here," my father said frustratedly, sounding pissed off by my question.
My frown deepened. "Where did they go? Can I please talk to Derrick? When are they coming back?" I asked, worried. Derrick was more than a friend to me, he was like a big brother—someone I looked up to.
Father, clearly annoyed by my constant whining, growled and stared at me with anger-filled eyes.
"Derrick is gone, and he is never coming back… this should be the last time you ask of him," he warned abruptly.
Tears gathered in my eyes, and heartbroken, I left the dining table and ran away crying, with my father calling after me.
