Chapter 10 - A Confident Troublemaker

Succubi Chapter 10. A Confident Troublemaker.

Her smirk widened slightly, like she knew exactly what she was doing. And yeah, that was definitely a bad sign. Because the next thing I knew, she leaned in closer—way too close—without letting go of my hand. Her eyes locked onto mine, sharp and unwavering, like she was studying something deeply.

I immediately pulled back a little.

What the hell was she doing?

I frowned. "Is there something on my face?"

Rivy's lips curled into a small smile. "No," she said smoothly. "You're quite cute. And handsome."

I internally cringed so hard that I nearly collapsed into another plane of existence.

Did she just—?

What?

I blinked at her, my brain short-circuiting. "Cute?" I repeated slowly, like I was trying to process the words correctly. "That's the first time someone's ever said that."

She tilted her head, eyes glinting with amusement. "Then people clearly lack taste."

I opened my mouth—then immediately shut it again.

Nope. Not engaging with that.

I tried to pull my hand away subtly, but Rivy's grip didn't loosen. If anything, she tightened it. And then, with zero warning, she added, "And menace." I snapped my gaze back to her.

Huh?

"A menace?" I repeated. "What does that even—?" Before I could finish my sentence, she suddenly pulled my hand toward her. I barely had time to react. It was fast, forceful, and deliberate. Like she was either trying to throw me… or kiss me. And judging by the way she moved, it could've been either one.

I didn't budge.

Somehow, some way, I held my ground.

Rivy's eyes widened slightly. Like she wasn't expecting me to match her strength. She blinked, her grip twitching. Then, with a slow, interested hum, she said, "Oh. You're strong."

I scoffed, still not letting go. "Is this some kind of game? Or are you actually trying to bully me?"

The words must have caught her off guard, because her face suddenly turned red. Like, actual blush red. She let go of my hand immediately, stepping back like she had just realized what she was doing.

"N-No," she muttered quickly, looking away for a split second. "I'm not trying to bully you."

I raised an eyebrow.

The shift in her demeanor was so sudden I almost thought I imagined it.

One second, she was smirking like a confident troublemaker.

The next?

She looked almost flustered.

Almost.

She cleared her throat, forcing herself back to neutral.

"You are…" she started slowly. Then, in a softer, more serious tone. "Interesting."

I frowned, still not sure how to respond.

Because what the hell was that supposed to mean?

I stared at Rivy, still trying to process everything that just happened.

Interesting?

Why did all the people around me keep saying that? That was way too vague, and considering she almost threw me or kissed me—still not sure which, I was not exactly reassured.

Before I could figure out a response, the sound of footsteps echoed down the hall. Both of us turned our heads at the same time.

There, standing at the end of the corridor, was Evelyn. The second her emerald eyes locked onto Rivy, she stopped.

"Oh," she said, her voice unreadable.

And then, for some reason, they just stared at each other. For way too long. It wasn't an awkward silence. It was something else. Like a silent exchange was happening between them. A conversation without words. They definitely recognized each other.

Or, at the very least—they knew something about each other.

But before I could comment on it, Evelyn finally approached. "You must be Rivy," she said smoothly.

Rivy smirked slightly. "And you're Evelyn? That new student?"

I frowned.

Wait.

So they didn't know each other?

Then what was that silent staring contest just now?

I kept my mouth shut, watching as Evelyn extended her hand. Rivy took it.

Unlike our earlier handshake-turned-power-struggle, this one was… normal.

A simple shake. No mind games. No strength flexing. Just two girls introducing themselves.

"I hope we can get along well," Evelyn said, her tone polite but firm.

Rivy nodded. "Yeah, I hope so too."

Then, without missing a beat, Evelyn glanced at me. "Do you still want to talk to Evan? I won't bother."

Rivy shook her head. "Nah. I just introduced myself." She turned her amber eyes back to me, her smirk reappearing slightly. "And I can tell," she murmured, "he's quite interesting."

I internally groaned.

Not this again.

Rivy then stretched her arms. "I guess this will be fun."

Evelyn nodded, smiling slightly. "Yes, he is interesting." Then, in the most casual tone possible. "I really hope he can get along well with us."

I blinked.

Okay.

That sounded way too ominous.

Rivy simply shrugged. "I guess. Anyway, I'll go back to my room. My class starts soon. I just came back to grab the books I left behind."

She turned, walking away without another word. But just before disappearing into her room, she called out, not even looking back. "See you guys at dinner."

I stared at the empty hallway. Then muttered under my breath. "That was the fastest and weirdest confession I have ever had."

Evelyn, still standing beside me, let out a small chuckle. "That wasn't a confession," she corrected.

I looked at her. "Excuse me?"

"She only said 'interesting.' Not 'love.'"

I frowned, crossing my arms. "Same thing."

Evelyn's smile deepened. "Not at all. Interest and love are different."

I sighed. "Yeah, yeah, I guess you have a point."

She nodded, then glanced toward the main hall. "Do you want to have lunch with me?"

I blinked, slightly caught off guard. Then quickly nodded. "Uh, yeah, sure. But," I added, "I hope you don't mind if my friend comes with us."

Evelyn tilted her head slightly, her emerald eyes studying me with that calm, unreadable gaze. "I don't mind," she said smoothly. "We go together."

Simple answer. No hesitation.

I nodded, falling into step beside her as we made our way toward the main building.

She glanced at me again. "Is he your childhood friend?"

I blinked. "Huh?"

"He looks very close to you," she clarified.

I paused mid-step.

My gaze subtly flicked to her, as if asking—Did you know him? Or have you seen him before?

Evelyn didn't even flinch under my silent question. She simply continued walking, her tone still as composed as ever. "I saw him and you before," she said, "in the scanning room. When they determined our class and houses."

I frowned. 'So that means… she's been watching us since then?' It wasn't exactly a weird thing to notice—the scanning room had dozens of students in it. But the way she said it… Like she had been paying attention specifically to me.

She must've caught on to my thoughts, because her lips twitched slightly in amusement. "Don't give me weird looks," she said casually. "When Rivy told you you're attractive, she was right."

I nearly tripped.

"What?" I blurted, eyes snapping to her.

"There's something about you that attracts us," she continued smoothly, as if she wasn't just casually dropping confusing statements. "Don't blame yourself."

I stared at her, my brain lagging.

What the hell was that supposed to mean?

"Mind explaining?" I asked.

Evelyn shook her head. "If I knew, I would've told you."

"But I also don't know," she admitted, her voice carrying the slightest trace of uncertainty. "What I feel," she murmured, looking ahead thoughtfully, "is that you're different from the others."

I frowned. "How so?"

She hummed softly, her gaze focused on something unseen. "I can't explain it either," she said. "It's like… your aura, maybe?"

I raised an eyebrow. "My aura?"

She nodded. "But it's not like you have a killing aura or something," she added. "It's just… different." She tilted her head slightly, as if trying to find the right words. "I can't explain it," she repeated.

I sighed, rubbing the back of my neck. "Yeah, well, you're not the first person to say I'm weird today, so I guess I'll just add that to my growing list of things I don't understand."

Evelyn let out a soft chuckle, her emerald eyes glinting slightly. "You'll figure it out eventually. Or maybe someone else will."

Not ominous at all.

I exhaled. "Right. Anyway, let's get lunch before my brain implodes."

She nodded, and we continued walking toward the main building.

The Academy's main building was massive, towering over the surrounding training facilities and dorms. Its sleek architecture blended modern technology with classic elegance, giving it the kind of prestigious atmosphere that made it clear only the elite trained here.

As soon as we stepped into the cafeteria, the scent of freshly cooked meals filled the air.

It was huge.

High ceilings, sleek tables, and a massive selection of food counters lined up with everything from grilled meats and salads to pasta, sushi, and desserts.

I spotted Leon immediately. He was standing near the entrance, arms crossed, clearly waiting for me. But the second he saw who I was with, his expression froze. I could physically see the gears in his head struggling to turn. His brows furrowed. Then he blinked rapidly, like he was trying to reboot.

"The hell am I looking at?" he muttered, staring at me.

I raised an eyebrow. "Uh. Me?"

He pointed at Evelyn. "Why the hell are you with her?"

Evelyn, to her credit, just smiled slightly, completely unbothered.

I sighed. "We live in the same dorm."

Leon's entire brain short-circuited on the spot. He stared at me, then at Evelyn, then back at me. Then, in the most deadpan voice possible, he spoke. "You're telling me that not only did you get thrown into an all-girls dorm, but one of the girls in that dorm is her?"

I shrugged. "Yeah, that's about right."

Leon dragged a hand down his face. "I hate you." He gestured wildly at me. "This is some next-level bullshit."

I rolled my eyes. "Are we eating, or are we just gonna stand here while you have a crisis?"

Leon grumbled something under his breath but waved us forward. "Come on, let's eat before I pass out."

We grabbed our trays and moved toward the food counters. And holy hell, the selection was insane. I piled my plate with grilled chicken, steamed veggies, and some buttered rice. Evelyn's tray had a bowl of soup, some sushi, and what looked like a side of fruit.

Leon? Dude stacked his plate so high it looked like a tower of food.

I raised an eyebrow. "You good?"

He nodded seriously. "I fight better when I'm full. I'm still holding a grudge against that Ares guy."

I scoffed. "That's a fancy way of saying you're a glutton."

Leon just grinned. "Survival instincts, my dude."

We found a table in the corner of the cafeteria, away from the busiest sections.

As soon as we sat down, Leon wasted no time interrogating me.

"So," he said, shoving a bite of food into his mouth. "Are the girls in your dorm trying to kill you yet?"

I sighed. "Not yet."

Leon narrowed his eyes. "That means they will."

Evelyn, still eating calmly, chimed in. "He's exaggerating."

Leon turned to her. "Are you sure? Because you live there too."

Evelyn just smiled slightly. "If someone wanted to kill him, he'd already be dead."

I paused mid-bite.

Leon stared at her.

Then at me.

Then back at her.

"…Holy shit," he muttered. "That wasn't even a joke, was it?"

Evelyn tilted her head, her face unreadable.

I sighed. "Leon, stop assuming I'm gonna die."

He shook his head. "No promises."

For a moment, we just ate in relative peace. But then—because Leon is Leon—he gave me a suspicious look. "Okay, but for real," he said, lowering his voice slightly. "Are there any… you know?"

I blinked. "What?"

He wiggled his eyebrows. "Hot girls."

Evelyn blinked at him.

I slowly set my fork down.

Leon leaned forward. "Come on, man. You're living in an all-girls dorm. Statistically, there's gotta be at least one—"

"Leon," I deadpanned.

"What?"

Evelyn simply took a sip of her drink. Then, in the calmest voice possible. "You're aware I'm part of that dorm, right?"

Leon froze. Then his face immediately went blank.

I snorted.

Evelyn's lips curled into the faintest smirk.

Leon coughed into his fist. "Uh. Right. Yeah. Okay. I'm gonna shut up now."

I laughed, shaking my head. "Good choice."

Despite everything, the lunch actually wasn't bad.
