Marcus Hale's POV
I nodded, watching her walk away. When she was gone, I let out the breath I'd been keeping. This double life was getting harder by the hour.
My phone buzzed with a message:
Phase 3 starts tonight. Is E neutralized?
The supernatural killers were getting impatient. They expected me to stop Elias from messing with their plans for Amara.
I typed back: E contained. Proceeding as planned.
Another lie. I was collecting lies like others gathered stamps, each one bringing me closer to disaster. I was too much of a coward to do otherwise. I have to hold out till things boil over; will the ever?
I rushed to my cabin, locking the door behind me. From under my bed, I pulled out the worn leather journal where I'd been tracking the assassins' actions for the past year.
It started when they approached me with a simple offer – help them watch the Artemis Pack in exchange for protection. My sister had been sick, dying from a mysterious disease. They promised to cure her.
