"Yes," Malakai agreed. "You've basically just proven Patro's claim."
Eve swallowed. "That's exactly what he wanted—the outcome he was after." She added, "But it would have made no difference."
"What do you mean?"
"My silence would have ended with the very same result. And if I had countered his claims, it would be a breach of our deal. It was either I kept silent or agreed his claims were true. There is truly no way out of the situation. It was still going to be the same result in the end."
Her teeth dug into her lip. "Though, I strangely feel better. Now, they can go to hell. I'm tired of their curiosity. If this will make them shut up, then so be it." She looked at him. "I'm sorry, though… I'm sure, I'm dragging you deeper into this mess."
