Chapter 55 - Fading Hope (One Last Time)

Hwan stood motionless in the middle of the living room. His back pressed against the wall, his head slightly bowed. His eyes were weary, but the weariness wasn't from lack of sleep—it was the weight of the pain inside him.

Sehun sat across from him. The silence, which had lasted for so long, was finally broken by Sehun's voice. It echoed in the room:

"Eunwoo… He left Yuna's place at midnight."

Hwan didn't move. His eyes shifted to Sehun's, but there was no emotion on his face.

Sehun continued, his voice growing heavier: "He had the red pill… in his hand. So, he didn't give it to Yuna." "When he left, he threw it in the trash can outside. I went and checked."

For a brief moment, a tiny light flickered inside Hwan. Maybe… there was still hope.

But that light was soon drowned by the overwhelming darkness. He understood now: Eunwoo had clashed with his fate once again.

"So… I really won't be with her forever," he whispered.

Sehun was about to say something, but Hwan silenced him with a slight gesture.

"Go, Sehun. I want to be alone today."

Sehun quietly left through the door. Once it closed, Hwan remained where he was, motionless. He didn't move. He was swallowed up by the endless darkness surrounding him. His last hope was dead.

The final words that echoed inside him were:

"I chose kindness… but kindness didn't choose me."

Morning

The sun rose. But for him, the sun never rose. In his house, in a room with the curtains drawn, he sat for hours. He was angry at himself, at life… and maybe even at Yuna. But as much as he wanted to, he couldn't be angry with her.

He stood up. The wall he had built around his heart was now complete.

And in that moment… Hwan died. The demon was reborn.

---

The Invisible Demon

The city… Glittering but slowly decaying from within. On top of a tall building, a young man stands at the edge of a suicide attempt.

(Hwan, in all his demon glory. But no one can see him.)

"No one wanted you. If you jump… you'll be free."

The young man closes his eyes… and lets himself fall into the abyss.

Hwan doesn't even blink. He just watches. Silent, merciless, cold.

---

Another Street

Two men are fighting in the street. One is trying to pull away.

Hwan leans close to his ear: "What if he kills you? You should do it first."

A darkness appears in the eyes. And a few seconds later… a knife plunges into a body. A life falls to the ground.

Hwan stands in the corner, watching. And with the pleasure he gets, he laughs. His invisible form allows him to commit crimes with greater freedom.

---

Another Street

Inside a house. A married couple is arguing. They still love each other, really.

But Hwan whispers little things to their hearts: "How many times has he cheated on you… How many more times will you forgive him?"

"He doesn't understand you. Leave him."

Minutes later, bags are packed. As tears of separation fall, Hwan looks through the window: Destruction has now become his art.

The Final Victim

Yuna hears a scream. She runs. Her heart is racing. The bad feeling inside her burns her eyes.

And then, she sees him.

Hwan. He's cornered a young girl against a wall. Fear in her eyes, and in Hwan's… nothing.

"Hwan!" she cries out.

Hwan looks up. His eyes are dark… but his voice is still familiar:

"Yuna… Why are you here? You should be with Eunwoo. You're in the wrong place. Go away."

Yuna doesn't know what to do. With trembling hands, she takes a step toward him. "Hwan… What are you doing?"

Hwan lets out a bitter laugh. "What? You've seen me like this before. Why are you surprised, Yuna?"

"I'm a demon. I was a demon even when I loved you. But… I thought maybe if I became like Eunwoo, you'd love me."

Tears begin to fall from Yuna's eyes. She steps closer to him.

"You're not like this. Please… come back to yourself. Let the girl go."

Hwan shakes his head. "I've always been like this, Yuna. Go away."

But Yuna doesn't leave. They struggle. Yuna tries to stop him. During the struggle, Hwan notices her tears.

"Why are you crying?" Hwan asks. "Is it for me… or for him?"

A long silence follows, and then Hwan shouts: "No matter what I do, you never loved me, Yuna! Why… Why was I ready to give you everything, but every time, you chose Eunwoo?!"

At that moment, the girl escapes from Hwan's weakening grip. But Hwan raises his hand. A force flies through the air. The girl rises by her throat, choking.

"Hwan! No! Please!" Yuna screams.

And then… Hwan's pupils turn blood red. Darkness wraps around him completely.

But Yuna… Despite the darkness, she runs toward him. And with all her strength, she embraces him.

"Stay the way I know you… Don't change… Please."

"I saw the person inside you. And I won't let him go."

These words… They were more real than anything anyone had ever said to him before.

Hwan's hand slowly lowers. The girl falls to the ground and runs away.

As Yuna still holds on to him… Hwan's eyes slowly return to normal.

A few seconds later… (flashback) Hwan recalls the happy memories from when he and Yuna were married in their contract life.

And then… his eyes slowly close.

"Yuna…" he whispers.

A single tear falls from his eyes.

And he loses consciousness. His head falls onto Yuna's shoulder.
