Chapter 25: The Quirk Apprehension Test
The classroom buzzed with quiet conversations, students introducing themselves, trading stories about the entrance exam, and speculating about their homeroom teacher. Some were already forming friendships, others simply observing. Izuku, seated comfortably in the back row, watched it all with mild amusement. He already knew how things would play out, more or less. But that didn't mean it wasn't fun to see it unfold firsthand.
Then the door slid open, and a sleeping bag shuffled into the room.
Or rather, a man inside a sleeping bag.
The class fell silent, all eyes fixed on the bizarre sight as the cocoon of fabric rustled, then unzipped itself to reveal a tired-looking man with messy black hair and half-lidded, dead fish eyes. He stared at them for a long moment, as if already regretting his life choices.
"It took you all eight seconds to shut up," he muttered. "That's not gonna work. We don't have time for pointless introductions. Here."
Without another word, he reached into his sleeping bag and pulled out a stack of U.A. gym uniforms, tossing them onto the podium.
"Put these on and meet me at the field."
Then, just as lazily as he arrived, he walked out.
The students sat there, blinking in stunned silence.
Finally, Iida shot up from his seat, his glasses flashing. "Sir! Shouldn't we introduce ourselves first? As a class, it's important that..."
Aizawa didn't even acknowledge him.
"U.A. is not like other schools," he called over his shoulder. "If you're looking for icebreakers, go somewhere else."
And he was gone.
The room remained quiet for a moment longer before Kaminari sighed. "Did we just get scammed out of introductions?"
"Looks like it," Izuku said, already standing up with a small smirk.
Without further hesitation, the class grabbed their uniforms and headed off to change.
The Training Field
Field Gamma was massive, the perfect open space for physical exercises and Quirk training. The sun sat high in the sky, casting shadows across the neatly maintained grass. Despite the clear weather, a heavy atmosphere settled over the class as they stood in front of their homeroom teacher, who looked just as tired as before.
"U.A. is known for its freedom in hero education," Aizawa began, his voice dry and uninterested. "That freedom comes with one rule, do well, or get lost."
That got everyone's attention.
"We're starting with a Quirk Assessment Test," he continued, pulling a small ball from his pocket. "The entrance exam only measured your ability to fight robots. That's not an accurate measure of a hero's potential. Today, we'll be testing your physical capabilities with your Quirks."
The mood shifted instantly. Excitement.
"So we get to use our Quirks for everything?" Kirishima grinned.
"This is gonna be fun!" Mina added.
Aizawa's gaze turned sharp. "Fun, huh?"
The slight edge in his tone sent a shiver through the students.
"Midoriya," Aizawa suddenly called.
Izuku blinked, slightly surprised.
Wait. Him? Not Bakugo? Then he remembered, It was because he was the first place holder.
That was new.
He stepped forward, feeling the eyes of his classmates shift toward him. Aizawa held out the ball. "You got the highest score on the entrance exam. Let's see how far you can throw this."
Bakugo's glare burned into his back, but Izuku ignored him as he took the ball.
Alright. If Aizawa wanted a demonstration, he'd get one.
Izuku rolled the ball in his palm, exhaling as heat built up in his body. Golden-orange flames flickered to life across his fingertips, licking at the surface of the ball. He cocked his arm back, flames surging up his shoulder.
Then, with a burst of fire, he launched it forward.
The ball became a streak of fire, soaring high into the air before vanishing into the distance.
Aizawa glanced at the device in his hand.
"Eight hundred forty-six meters."
For a second, the field was silent.
Then—
"DUDE!" Kirishima shouted. "That was insane!"
"You literally set the sky on fire!" Kaminari added.
"Holy crap, That was so cool!" Mina laughed.
That last comment was perfect. Izuku smirked and turned slightly, just enough to see Bakugo's face twist in rage. His fists clenched at his sides, his whole body shaking with restrained anger.
Izuku simply grinned.
Yeah. This year was gonna be fun.
The Tests Begin
One by one, the students lined up for the remaining tests.
50-Meter Dash. Izuku was paired against Iida, who obviously smoked him with his Engine Quirk, but Izuku still managed a solid 3.5 seconds using fire bursts to accelerate.
Grip Strength. He squeezed the device, muscles tensing. 110 kg. Strong, but nowhere near Shoji, who had mutant arms.
Standing Long Jump. With a well-timed explosion of flames from his feet, Izuku easily cleared the entire sand pit.
Repeated Side Steps. A simple agility drill. His training had made him fast and balanced. No problems here.
Sit-Ups. He knocked out 72 sit-ups in one minute. Easy.
Seated Toe-Touch. His flexibility was already excellent. No struggles.
Long-Distance Run. While most of the class tired out quickly, Izuku paced himself with controlled fire bursts, keeping his speed consistent without overexertion.
By the time the final student finished, some were exhausted, others looked relieved, and a select few were as composed as ever.
Aizawa pulled out his tablet, clicking a few buttons before turning it toward the class.
"Here are the results."
The rankings appeared on the screen.
At the very top: Shoto Todoroki.
Just behind him, in second place: Izuku Midoriya.
And in third: Katsuki Bakugo.
Izuku smirked slightly as he heard the gritted teeth coming from behind him.
At the bottom of the list, trembling in horror, was Mineta.
Aizawa let out a tired sigh. "I was lying about the expulsion."
Silence.
Then—
"WHAT?!"
"You mean we went through all that stress for nothing?!" Kaminari yelled.
Aizawa looked completely unbothered. "The real world isn't fair. If you're going to survive as heroes, learn to work under pressure."
Izuku chuckled to himself. Classic Eraserhead.
"That's all for today," Aizawa muttered. "Tomorrow, hero training begins. Don't be late."
As the class began to disperse, Izuku stole a glance at Bakugo.
His former childhood friend sat stiffly on the grass, hands clenched into fists, staring at the rankings with a scowl deep enough to burn a hole through the screen.
Izuku turned away with a smirk.
This year was already shaping up to be very, very interesting.
