Chapter 39 - The Forbidden Zone

The trio made their way into the school building, their conversation turning to mundane topics as they headed toward their classroom.

As they entered the hallway, students turned to stare.

Whispers followed them.

"That's him."

"The guy who's fighting Lucas."

"No way he wins, right?"

Ethan ignored them; his gaze focused straight ahead.

He could feel the attention, but it didn't faze him anymore.

They reached their classroom, and as always, his seat was in the middle—between Evelyn and Everly.

As he made his way toward it, the door slammed open, and a figure entered.

Lucas Grayson walked in, flanked by his usual group of cronies.

He was tall and muscular, his short blond hair styled to perfection, his uniform slightly undone like he couldn't care less.

One of his lackeys leaned toward him and whispered something, probably letting him know that Ethan was already there.

His emerald eyes flashed as he looked over the classroom, and when they landed on Ethan, a predatory smile crossed his face.

He raised his hand slowly—then ran his thumb across his throat in a mock cutting gesture, all while locking eyes with Ethan.

His grin widened, full of arrogance and challenge.

Ethan didn't blink.

He simply returned the look with a small, amused smile, then turned around and took his seat.

"That guy…" Evelyn muttered.

"He's not worth your time," Everly added.

Ethan nodded. "I know. But it's fun to watch him try so hard."

More whispers filled the room as students took their places, excitement buzzing in the air.

Everyone was waiting for the match.

Ethan leaned back in his seat, arms folded behind his head, a calm look on his face.

Lucas may have thought that his display was intimidating, but the truth was, it was anything but.

If Lucas wanted to fight, Ethan would be happy to oblige.

All he had to do was wait.

After all, he was sure the idiot would be the first to throw the first punch.

Time passed, and the tension mounted, students eagerly anticipating a brawl.

But eventually, the door opened again, and their homeroom teacher entered—Mr. Halden.

He was a tall, thin man in his early forties with graying hair and kind eyes that hid a sharp mind.

"Good morning, everyone," he greeted with a slight nod. "Let's get started."

The class quieted down, and everyone focused on him.

"I know many of you are excited about today's match," he began, glancing briefly at Ethan and Lucas, "but before we get into that, there are a few important announcements regarding the upcoming Superpower College Entrance Exams."

A low murmur swept through the classroom.

"As you all know, we have about a month until the official exams begin. The first part of the exam is the written and cultural knowledge test, which hasn't changed from previous years.

It'll test your understanding of power history, superpower ethics, global culture, and theory-based applications of your gifts."

A series of groans rose up, the students clearly dreading the hours of tedious study ahead.

"But for all of you, the second part of the exam is the most important," Mr. Halden continued, "As it is the practical combat assessment. That's where things usually change.

However, from what I've heard—though it's not confirmed yet—the top colleges are likely going to use the same testing ground they've used for the last ten years."

He paused.

"The Forbidden Zone."

Another round of murmurs spread, but most have heard about the testing place and know people from the last few years so they know a thing or two about the forbidden zone.

"Now, the Forbidden Zone is a vast territory that is under the control of a powerful Beast who rules over the forbidden zone.

It's home to a wide variety of wildlife and ecosystems, and it has a reputation for being dangerous due to the unpredictable creatures that live there.

However, over the years, it has become a popular training site for college-bound superpower users because the challenges there provide a unique and realistic environment for developing one's powers.

In addition, the terrain and vegetation can change at any moment, forcing you to adapt and react to the ever-changing situation."

Mr. Halden's expression grew serious.

"So, keep that in mind when preparing for the exam.

Remember, the Forbidden Zone is dangerous, even for superpower users. And while the area has been cleared and marked off as a testing zone, there are still plenty of threats.

If you're not prepared, it could cost you dearly. So take this opportunity seriously and put in the necessary effort."

"Yes, sir," the class echoed.

"But it's also fair. Everyone gets evaluated based on how well they adapt, survive, and make use of their powers."

He sighed. "I can't tell you the exact requirements because even I don't know. They change the details every year to make it more challenging."

He chuckled.

"Well, then, enough lecturing. We can discuss this in greater detail during our afternoon sessions. For now, let's get back to the reason you're all here today."

He nodded toward Ethan and Lucas.

"Today, we're having a match. This is an excellent opportunity to see the strengths and weaknesses of each student and, thus, gain insight into how to train effectively. So pay close attention.

The rules are simple: no using lethal attacks, no killing, no leaving the school grounds.

Now, are both parties ready?"

"Yes," Ethan and Lucas answered, standing up and facing each other.

The classroom buzzed with anticipation.
