Fortunately, as soon as they closed the door behind them, they found the doctor just returning with the bleaching solution.
"There's a change of plan," Richard said and extracted a puzzled look from the doctor followed by an aptly, "Sir?"
"She's waking up," Richard said, lowering his voice. "Listen carefully—she mustn't know we were in that room. Especially not me."
The doctor's eyes widened. "But—"
Richard raised his hand to cut him off. "What's there to be confused about?" he asked impatiently. "If she asks about her face, you tell her you wiped it when treating her. Say the fire left some residue, and you needed to clean it off before treatment."
The doctor blinked. "Yes, sir."
Richard stepped closer and lowered his voice into a darker and more threatening note. "You will convince her that you are the only one who's seen her like this. That no one else came in. And that as a doctor, her secret is safe with you. Got it?"
"I understand. But— "
