What was inside? And why had someone gone through all the trouble of delivering it in such a cryptic, hostile way?
Her thoughts returned to Mrs. Reynolds, the kindly woman who had lived in the apartment building for years. Claire trusted her, but Mrs. Reynolds' account of the situation had only added more uncertainty.
When Claire had arrived at the building, Mrs. Reynolds was sitting on the stoop, her hands wet from washing clothes outside. Her face was lined with worry, and Claire could see that she had been expecting her.
"I'm sorry to bother you, Mrs. Reynolds, but did you happen to see who delivered the package?" Claire had asked, trying to keep her voice calm, though she couldn't suppress the growing anxiety in her chest.
