"They never do," Ellie muttered, her Falcon's Eye sharpening her vision as she scanned her surroundings. "But we'll make it through. We always do."

His gaze snapped to her. She was still staring at her screen, her fingers clenched around nothing, shoulders taut. The words she had spoken —"I'm finally safe"— kept replaying in his head. But she didn't look safe. She looked...lost.
