Chapter 38 - Stare

Before this begins..

I think i must introduce a character since not many know her.

Monica Chang fury she was Fury's Ex Wife in the Ultimate Universe of marvel comics.

---

Nick Fury sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the floor in the middle of the night.

His mind felt heavy, like someone had poured cement into his skull.

Ever since he came back, he'd felt... hollow.

After surviving that traumatizing mission which he was in no way qualified for...he finally had enough time to think and strategize.

But his mind was riddled with a sense of hollowness.

He had spent years believing in something — fighting for something.

S.H.I.E.L.D. was supposed to be the last line of defense, a force that stood between the world and chaos.

But now.....He knew better...

HYDRA had been there all along.

Hell — they had built the damn thing.

The organization he'd poured his blood, sweat, and soul into had been their puppet from the start.

All those years... all that effort... for what?

He felt numb just thinking about it.

There was no rage in him — no grief, no shock — just... nothing.

If not for Leo and himself being a paranoid fucker from the start, he wasn't sure what would've kept him going....Without having actual allies beside SHIELD.

The Satan in Kid form , had pointed him toward people he could possibly trust — good people, reliable people.

People with resources he could use..

It wasn't much since it was mostly speculation, but it was something.

"Everything alright?"

Fury blinked, pulled from his thoughts by Monica's voice.

She was sitting up beside him, her hair a little messy, her bare shoulder peeking from beneath the sheets.

Her eyes — were watching him closely.

"You've been... off since you got back," she said softly.

Fury exhaled, long and slow.

He turned to her, tried to find the right words.

"Trust me," he said, voice low and tired, "you wouldn't believe half the things I've seen."

Monica's brow lifted a little. "Oh?" she asked, a hint of curiosity in her voice. "You serious?"

Fury leaned back, resting his head against the headboard.

"Well…" He gave a dry chuckle — empty, bitter. "How about this — I'm now some kind of a direct descendant of a primordial dragon goddess… one that's credited with being the origin of life."

Monica blinked. For a moment, she just stared at him.

Then, her eyebrow shot up.

"You're serious?"

"Dead serious."

There was a pause, then Monica let out a breath — part sigh, part laugh.

"Damn,Like,...Damn" she muttered, flopping back against her pillow. "And here I thought you were just stressed."

"Stressed?" Fury scoffed. "I found out my whole life's work was built on a lie, half the people I trusted were traitors, and now I've got dragon blood running through me."

Monica chuckled softly. "So... same old Nick Fury life, huh?"

Fury laughed — a little.

"Yeah," he muttered, shaking his head. "Same old life."

Monica grinned, her eyes glinting with mischief.

"Well... about that dragon blood," she teased, shifting closer. "I think you always had that running in you."

Before Fury could respond, she pushed herself up and crawled across the bed, resting her head on his shoulder. Her fingers traced slow circles on his arm — lazy, warm, familiar.

"So," she murmured, her voice softer now, "I think the only thing that's really changed... is that you need some better friends." She pressed a kiss to his cheek, her lips lingering for just a second longer than usual.

"Now…" Her voice dropped to a whisper as she leaned in close, her breath warm against his ear.

"You've been gone for weeks... so how about you let me thoroughly experience this dragon upgrade of yours again?"

---

Leo sat back in his beloved spot on the school grounds, his back pressed lazily against the wooden bench.

The sound of lunchtime chatter filled the air, but Leo's thoughts drifted back to what he'd seen earlier this morning.

On his way in, he'd witnessed Issei — the Issei — bowing his head in apology to a group of girls he had harassed in the past.

The infamous pervert, once known for peeping, groping, and generally being a walking headache for most girls on campus, now looked... humbled.

It was the news of the day and it spread like wildfire — Issei Hyoudou, the school's notorious pervert, had suddenly turned over a new leaf.

Now, here he was, back on his favorite bench with Koneko.

The rooftop — their usual spot — had been claimed by some other students, and neither of them had felt like dealing with the crowd.

So they settled here.

It had been a quiet lunch so far, the comfortable kind of quiet.

Koneko sat beside him, quietly nibbling on her bento, occasionally stealing a glance at his, but she didn't ask for it.

But then Koneko finally spoke.

"I'll be gone for a few days," she said suddenly, her voice soft but clear.

Leo paused mid-bite, lowering his sandwich. "Oh?" His brow rose. "Something important?"

Koneko shifted uncomfortably, her fingers fidgeting with the edge of her lunchbox.

She avoided his gaze, staring down at her food like it suddenly required her full concentration.

"...Family matters," she muttered after a brief pause.

Leo's eyes narrowed slightly.

That's a lie.

Still, he didn't press her.

Instead, he leaned back, feigning surprise. "Huh. That's kinda sudden,".

"Yeah..." Koneko said awkwardly, her voice barely above a mumble.

Intending to break out of whatever thing on her mind that was making her unable to express clewrly leo resorted to his horrible humor.

"You know," Leo said, a slight grin creeping onto his face, "if you're running away to join the circus, you could've just said so."

Koneko's hand twitched — and for a second, Leo thought she might actually throw a rice ball at him.

Instead, she let out a quiet snort and shook her head.

"Idiot," she muttered — but there was a faint smile on her face now.

For now, that was enough.

Leo, not wanting to drag the conversation any further, gave a casual shrug.

"Well, hope the problem resolves soon enough," he said, his tone light yet certain.

The resident cat — her sharp eyes now softer — had a small smile.

"I hope for that too," she replied, her voice quieter than usual.

---

As the school day came to an end, Leo walked down the hallway, blending in with the crowd of students heading home.

The usual noise of laughter and conversation filled the air, but something made him stop.

Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted a woman standing by one of the classroom windows.

Her hair was a strange mix of black and gold, and she was staring directly at him.

He had sensed her presence but ignored it , during class but right now she was staring at him.

She didn't look away — her gaze steady, as if she knew him.

Frowning, Leo turned to a nearby classmate — a girl he vaguely remembered.

He'd once used his ability to fix her awful temper.

Yachi... that was her name.

"Hey," he called out, stopping her.

"Who's that?" He nodded toward the woman.

Yachi glanced over and shrugged. "Oh, her? That's the new history teacher."

"History...?" Leo muttered. Something felt off.

His eyes glowed — just for a split second — and suddenly, everything became clear.

His mind was filled with information about her — every detail laid bare in an instant.

The woman's body housed a powerful presence — one he recognized as a divine being... Ishtar.
