A thick Hyper Beam shot straight toward Liam at an incredible speed. He had already been on high alert, and the moment the Aerodactyl turned its head, he began dodging.
However, completely evading the attack was impossible—so much for the anime making it look easy!
In the blink of an eye, the Hyper Beam was right in front of him. Liam felt utterly hopeless; half his body was already engulfed by the attack. Would he even survive this?
Time seemed to slow down as a montage of his life flashed before his eyes. He saw Delia, Professor Oak, Aunt Fumiko, and his other friends.. And his Pokémon… They…?!
Woosh!
Just as his thoughts spiraled out of control, a white figure shot toward him like a lightning bolt, carrying a torrent of sand in its wake.
Liam saw only a white flash before he felt a powerful force shove him away. In the next instant, that white figure was struck by the Hyper Beam and sent hurtling through the air.
Boom!
The Hyper Beam tore through the ground, carving out a deep trench before blasting into the depths of the cavern. A deafening explosion followed, sending flames and shockwaves in all directions.
"GARCHOMP!"
Liam, knocked to the ground by the impact, quickly got up—only to witness Garchomp being blasted away. A sharp pain stabbed his chest, and he let out a heart-wrenching scream.
"GRAAAAHHH!"
But then—following the explosion—a furious roar echoed through the cavern. From the depths of the chasm, a battered figure burst forth. Garchomp's eyes burned with rage as it glared at Aerodactyl.
With a powerful flick of its fins, it enveloped itself in a surging aura of Dragon-type energy, becoming a furious dragon streaking upward toward its airborne foe.
Garchomp was livid. It didn't care about getting hurt, but Liam's life had been in danger. Even though he was unharmed, Aerodactyl's actions had crossed the line.
Liam was the one who had hatched Garchomp, the most important person in its life. Watching someone attack its trainer right before its eyes sent its fury into overdrive.
"Aero!"
Aerodactyl saw Garchomp charging and immediately sensed the sheer power behind its attack.
It roared and, despite the lingering exhaustion from firing Hyper Beam, gathered swirling white energy around its body, forming an egg-shaped barrier before launching itself downward to meet Garchomp's assault.
Liam's eyes widened. Both Pokémon were using high-power charging moves—Garchomp with Dragon Rush and Aerodactyl with what seemed to be Giga Impact.
Garchomp was already injured. This collision would likely decide the battle!
The two clashed in midair with a thunderous impact, sending shockwaves in all directions. The force of the collision shattered nearby rock formations, reducing them to rubble.
"ROOOAR!"
"AERO!"
Both Pokémon were violently repelled by the impact, flung in opposite directions like cannonballs.
Garchomp crashed into a towering rock pillar, snapping it in half before using the momentum to stabilize itself, spreading its fins wide and summoning a gust of wind to slow its descent.
As soon as it landed, it fell to one knee, gasping for breath.
Aerodactyl, on the other hand, smashed directly into the cavern ceiling. The rock cracked and crumbled, embedding the massive Pokémon into the stone.
It didn't move.
"Garchomp! Are you okay? Can you hold on?"
Liam ran to his Pokémon's side, immediately retrieving a Full Restore from his bag and pouring it into Garchomp's mouth.
Unlike in the games, where a Full Restore instantly healed a Pokémon's HP and removed status conditions, real-life Full Restores didn't operate on a strict HP system.
Instead, they provided a massive boost to stamina and removed status effects. They were expensive, costing 200 exchange points per bottle—but Liam didn't hesitate, wishing he could give Garchomp even more.
Fortunately, the medicine worked quickly. Garchomp's breathing steadied, its wounds closed at a visible rate, and soon, it stood up again.
"Gar..!"
Fully recovered, Garchomp affectionately nuzzled Liam's head before turning to glare at the Aerodactyl still embedded in the rock ceiling.
"Graa! Graah!"
It pointed at Aerodactyl with an expression of smug satisfaction, clearly boasting about its victory.
Liam finally relaxed. He patted Garchomp's large head before taking out a PokéBall. Walking beneath the suspended Aerodactyl, he tossed the ball upward with ease—after all, the ceiling was only about ten meters high.
Click.
The PokéBall struck Aerodactyl, opened, and sucked it inside. Then, it fell back down, landing neatly in Liam's hand. The ball shook twice before falling still.
[Ding!]
[Mission Complete: Battle the King of Grampa Canyon.]
[Rewards: 1000 Exchange Points, TM Flamethrower x1.]
The mission was over. There was no additional follow-up. He had claimed his rewards, captured a powerful Aerodactyl, and even caught a few other ancient Pokémon.
This had been a massive success. It was time to leave.
According to Liam's memory, there weren't many different species of ancient Pokémon slumbering in Grampa Canyon.
He had already caught most of them—no need to get greedy.
With that decision made, Liam climbed onto Garchomp's back and patted its shoulder.
"Let's go home. You worked hard today, Garchomp. I'll make sure you get a proper reward."
Garchomp's face lit up with joy. It spread its fins and leaped into a tunnel leading upward.
The passage wasn't wide enough to allow it to fly, so it extended its fins like climbing axes, digging into the rock walls and using its powerful legs to push itself upward.
In no time, they emerged onto the surface. Just as Liam's feet touched the ground, a furious roar echoed from the depths of the cavern.
A moment later, another Hyper Beam erupted from below, shooting skyward. Liam's heart pounded—good thing they had climbed out in time, or that would've been trouble.
"Garchomp, collapse the tunnel!"
He could tell from the roar below that there were still more Aerodactyl slumbering in the canyon. The one he caught, although exceptional, wasn't the only one.
"Roar!"
Garchomp stood at the tunnel's entrance and unleashed a Dragon Rage into its depths. The energy blast slammed into the cavern walls, shattering them instantly.
Rocks of all sizes tumbled down, completely sealing off the passage. Even the roars from below became muffled.
"Alright, Garchomp. You really did work hard this time. Rest up in your PokéBall for now. We're almost at the next town, where we can relax."
Liam recalled Garchomp into its PokéBall before pulling out his Bike and speeding toward the nearest town.
According to the map, a small but bustling town lay ahead. Despite its size, it was known as a wealthy settlement, home to many rich families.
There would definitely be a Pokémon Center there. He planned to rest and send his newly captured ancient Pokémon to Professor Oak.
"Man, not having a teleportation system is such a hassle. I wonder how Bill's research is coming along… I really can't wait for a working teleportation network."
Muttering complaints, Liam pedaled onto the smooth roads, leaving behind the treasure trove of Grampa Canyon.
Who knew what would happen to the ancient Pokémon slumbering there now?
Perhaps one day, someone else would stumble upon this place. When that happened, those Pokémon would no longer have the luxury of peaceful sleep.
For now, though, Liam decided to keep this secret to himself. He had already gained plenty from this trip—consider this his way of giving back.
He hoped the ancient Pokémon could continue to sleep undisturbed.
