Chapter 8 - Just a normal day

I woke up, turning so I faced upwards I looked at the clock on the wall 5:00 am.

Groaning I got up, I never really needed much sleep, none of us did but some of us enjoyed sleeping in till late.

I started my daily exercise, 200 pushups then 100 pistol squats. That was basically all.

I didn't really see a need for exercises since my energy was basically doping me to abnormal levels, but I kinda liked the feeling it gave me.

I was sweating, I checked the time 5:35, I bathed quickly. Or relatively quickly, I always loved the feeling of water on my body which always made me spend extra time in the bathroom.

5:55 I dressed and watered all the plants in my room, My school didn't have a uniform, anything appropriate was alright.

I wore a shirt and trousers, cooperate attire. It was untucked and a tie lay loosely on my neck.

Getting my phone off the table, I didn't carry the same bag as yesterday, today I wasn't going to the ring. This would just be a regular school day.

By the time I got downstairs, the smell of breakfast was overpowering, The food was already arranged on the table.

I caught a brief glimpse of my mum walking into the kitchen with an apron, she must have been carrying dishes back and forth.

I was the first one down, the scent filled the entire ground floor, the portions of chicken looked tender and juicy, there were fruits piled around the table, cut watermelons and pineapples, there was even soup, and boiled potatoes.

I gulped a mouthful of saliva, the scent alone was a meal, the fruits were cold, I could feel it, it just gave off a cold vibe I guess.

The food often didn't look all together to me, my mum often did that, it's almost Iike it was a mash of everyone's favourite things.

I helped my mum set the table, I often did that a lot. We worked wordlessly, as was normal most of the time.

But... today was different, I could tell she was angry today.

"I'm sorry.... about yesterday. " I blurted out, she didn't even turn, fuck... I thought to myself, "I....", "You could have quit" She cut me off, her voice was calm and she still didn't look at me.

I walked toward her slowly, "You fight like it means something..., like as though winning would lead you anywhere, but no matter what happened you are a part of this family." Her voice started to break.

I wrapped my hands around her lightly.

"I'm sorry..."I whispered, "And yet you still don't get it.... You go out boxing and come in challenging your father to duels..., and none... none of it makes sense." She was sobbing now.

I released her from my hug, hurriedly getting a tissue, what have I been doing my whole life? I asked myself.

As I brought the tissues the sight of her almost brought tears to my eyes, but I couldn't cry now, she'll only hide her tears to comfort me.

"I'm sor...." I tried to talk and she cut me off, "Tell me you'll stop"she said firmly, I looked away, she was glaring at me now.

She left the kitchen, I could hear everyone heading down now, but I stayed in the kitchen, my appetite was gone.

A tear dropped down an eye, it's how I've always cried, since a long time ago, since the accident.

I joined the table few seconds later, my mum didn't look at me, my sister talked as though she couldn't sense what was happening.

I sat on the closest table from the kitchen, I avoided glancing at my sister as usual, her eyes had nothing to do with her powers but I didn't want to see how she looked at me.

The table was more silent today, I sat inbetween my dad and brother, my brother was his normal reserved self, the only thing weird about him today was the fact that he was all dressed as though heading out to work.

I could have sworn this was the first time he was dressed like that this month, and yet the month was halfway through.

Must have been unavoidable work. I suspected he had managed to animate a real life clone, but that would be too much even for him.

My Dad looked out of it, and he ate slowly, Dahlia called out to him twice, No response, I touched him.

He snapped back to reality immediately, he looked shocked, then he smiled. "Just thinking about work, I got a serious call today, don't pay me much mind." He lied

I recognised that smile, that rushed hurried tone, the way he just rushed answers back at us.

I always knew where I got my poor lying skills from.

Something was up, I looked at Dahlia and she winked at me, she knew something was up. Theo looked unbothered, he probably didn't pick up on it, and mum tried to hide the fact that she was concerned.

Soon after, breakfast was done and we all went our various ways as the dolls cleared up as usual.

I picked up my phone texting Alex.

"Off to school" I sent, she replied almost immediately.

"Same

I'll be outside my house"

I opened the door heading outside for school.

It was cold and cloudy, but no matter how dull the day felt I preferred it to a sunny morning any day.

I took in the environment, people bustled about to their various jobs.

The street was filled with colorful buildings it seemed like my house was the only sane one as it was just white.

We didn't live on the same street so I left the street, entering the road where public transport vehicles whizzed about.

It was a different path from where I jogged yesterday, the road was lively and even the sidewalks were filled with people.

The distance between our houses wasn't far, and soon enough I was at her street, I walked in heading to her house.

She waited outside, no matter how dull the day looked she was untouched by it all, I admired her.

She wore a yellow dress with a long sleeved purple shirt underneath, and her hair was braided into many fine strands, a golden heart shaped necklace lay on her chest.

Her eyes caught mine, they were rich green pearls on her face, I looked down for a second before raising my head back up.

The motion let me notice her black shoes, as she walked towards me. "Is there a problem?" She asked staring into my eyes, it was an odd first question.

"Nothing at all" I said with a smile, I must have looked bothered, I kept a slight smile on my face.

She stared at me as if to say I'm not buying your act. Nothing really was bothering me, I probably just needed some rest, maybe I was sleepy or worn out from the fights, or maybe it was the weather.

"Your outfit is nice" I said, She muttered a thanks, the mood instantly became dull.

She always got like this whenever she felt I was hiding something.

I sighed heavily causing her to look at me. "I'm alright it must be the weather or something".

"Are you sick?" She asked. "Nah... my mum would have noticed first" I replied, I never really got sick, thankfully the mood had picked up a little.

We continued idle chatter as we left the street and walked to school.

We stood in front of the building gates, "I can't wait to leave this place" I muttered as we walked in.

Alex stared at me with her green eyes, they made me feel like my brown black ones were so plain.

"If your plan after school was to join your mum you could always leave." She said, her words made me consider my future, what really was my plan with school.

"What do you plan to do after school?" I asked her, she looked at me like I was dumb for asking, either that or she was pissed that I was just asking now.

"I'm going to be an Engineer, biomedical to be exact, I'll make prostetic limbs and keep hospital equipment maintained, that way I can protect people and aid the vulnerable."

She spoke with so much passion I almost felt scared for her, people with that much dreams and hopes don't recover well if everything crumbles down on them.

"Why not become a doctor then?, you'll save lives, and be able to keep people safe.". "It's not the same thing, I want to be an Engineer and then save lives. I can't really explain it well enough to you but that's what I want to do" Her voice was rising now.

The discussion continued till we reached our class. We both sat away from each other, I was in the middle seat at the back while she was in front ahead of me.

I didn't talk to anyone, I just played games on my phone until class began.

Class started soon and I dropped my phone. Not long after the teacher started talking I swiftly lost track of the world around me.

I spotted a yellow and purple shape ahead of me, it tried to keep me grounded to reality.

I could have sworn something supernatural was happening, I couldn't focus on anything, and it felt like my eyes wouldn't stay open even if i physically held it open.

I fell asleep.
