The early hours of the morning.
Blue Mist Manor, the reception room.
"Ha—"
Link Star let out a yawn, his eyes watering with exhaustion. Over the past three days, he had been tirelessly preparing for the recent political upheaval, drafting development plans for Piltover and Zaun, and outlining his own ambitious projects. Sleep had been a luxury he couldn't afford.
Now, having finally fulfilled the mission he had taken on since his arrival in this world, he felt a rare sense of relief. But with that relief came overwhelming fatigue.
Still, there was one last thing to do before he could rest.
"Sir—" The butler, dressed in a dark red and gold uniform, entered the room quietly. "Miss Caitlyn and Miss Vi are here."
"Let them in," Link said, waving his hand. The butler nodded and stepped aside, allowing Caitlyn and Vi to enter the room.
"Bring some tea and pastries," Link instructed casually, and the butler left without a word.
"Make yourselves comfortable. We're all familiar with each other, no need to be formal," Link said, gesturing for them to sit. Caitlyn hesitated, but Vi plopped down on the couch without a second thought.
Vi picked up an apple from the fruit bowl on the table, glancing around the lavish room. "Pretty fancy place you've got here. Hard to believe a big shot like you used to pretend to be a small-time reporter."
Caitlyn, sitting beside Vi, frowned slightly at her bluntness but said nothing.
"Fate works in mysterious ways," Link replied with a wry smile. "You never know whether tomorrow or an accident will come first."
"Anyway, let's cut to the chase," Link said, pulling out two documents from the side and sliding them across the table toward Caitlyn and Vi.
"What's this?" Caitlyn picked up one of the documents and began to read. The contents were detailed, but the more she read, the more her eyebrows rose in surprise. By the end, her eyes were wide with shock.
Vi, noticing Caitlyn's reaction, picked up the other document. But the dense text made her head spin, and she quickly set it down with a grimace.
"Mr. Link—" Caitlyn began, but Link interrupted her. "Just call me Link. No need for formalities."
"Alright," Caitlyn took a deep breath. "Link, this idea of yours is insane. Having the law enforcement agencies of Piltover and Zaun swap roles, letting the people of one city protect the other—do you have any idea how many people would oppose this if it were made public?"
"Reform always comes with growing pains," Link replied calmly. "Besides, this could be a groundbreaking experiment for both cities. I've also included performance evaluations, public satisfaction surveys, and oversight from Janna and House Ferros. If this succeeds, the animosity between Piltover and Zaun could disappear within three to five years."
"But why us?" Caitlyn asked, pointing to the section of the document that mentioned her and Vi. Vi looked back and forth between them, confused. "What are you two talking about?"
"Link wants me to go to Zaun as an enforcer, and you to Piltover," Caitlyn explained simply. Vi's eyes widened. "What the hell? Is this some new form of torture?"
"On the contrary," Link corrected her. "This is reconciliation."
"Vi, your parents were killed by enforcers during the Night of Ashes."
Vi's expression darkened.
"Caitlyn, your mother died in Jinx's attack on the council."
Caitlyn's face paled.
"I chose you two because both of you have lost loved ones due to the conflicts between these two cities."
Link's cold tone made Vi clench her fists, ready to lash out, but Caitlyn quickly held her back, shaking her head subtly.
Link smiled faintly at their interaction. "Let me ask you this: do you know the root cause of the tragedies you've experienced?"
The question left both women silent. Link continued, "Why were Vi's parents killed by enforcers? Because they led a riot across the Progress Bridge. But what drove them to do that?"
He looked at Vi. "They wanted a better future for their daughter. They wanted her to escape the poverty and suffering they endured. They wanted her to grow up away from the toxic mines, to live a dignified and prosperous life. But what stood in their way?"
"Piltover's wealth and power, and its exploitation of Zaun," Link answered his own question, turning to Caitlyn. "Piltover's elite monopolized the wealth and treated Zaun like a dumping ground, stripping its people of their future."
"And what drove Jinx to attack the council?" Link asked Caitlyn.
Caitlyn's lips trembled, but no words came out.
"Aside from Jinx's personal reasons, the biggest factor was Piltover's oppression of Zaun. If Piltover had treated Zaun with respect, if its people had been allowed to live with dignity, free from pollution and poverty, none of this would have happened. Jinx would never have been born."
"Vi, what would your life be like if Jinx had never existed?" Link asked.
Vi opened her mouth but said nothing.
"Caitlyn, what would your life be like if your mother were still alive?"
Caitlyn's face darkened, but she remained silent.
"Since neither of you wants to answer, I'll do it for you."
"Vi, your family would be whole. You might have become a bar owner, a bodyguard, or a famous fighter. You'd go home to your parents' nagging and dote on your little sister."
"Caitlyn, your family would still be intact. You'd continue pursuing your passion, occasionally butting heads with your mother over your career or marriage. And when you came home exhausted, your mother would be there to greet you with her usual mix of scolding and affection."
"But that's just a dream. Reality is far crueler."
"You've directed your anger and hatred at the 'enemy' in front of you, but you've never stopped to consider the root cause of it all."
"Now," Link tapped the wooden table in front of him, "this is your chance to change things."
"Vi, you'll become Piltover's enforcer. Caitlyn, you'll take charge of Zaun's law enforcement. Together, you can address the root causes of your tragedies and ensure no one else suffers the same fate."
"So, what's your answer?"
Link waited. Vi closed her eyes, leaning back on the couch in silence. Caitlyn took a deep breath, steadying herself, and met Link's gaze.
"If we agree, will things really get better?"
"That depends on how you handle it," Link said with a shrug. "I'm just giving you the opportunity. What you make of it is up to you."
"Then I accept," Caitlyn said, picking up the document. Link turned to Vi. "And you?"
Vi opened her eyes, glanced at Caitlyn, and picked up the file. "Let's just hope I don't screw this up."
"As long as you put your heart into it, you won't," Link said with a satisfied smile.
Caitlyn and Vi exchanged a look but said nothing more.
"By the way, as a reward for your cooperation, I have gifts for you."
Link pulled out a letter and a talisman from his pocket.
"The letter is for Caitlyn. The talisman is for Vi."
He handed them over. Caitlyn's hands trembled as she recognized her family's crest on the envelope. Vi, however, looked puzzled as she examined the talisman.
"What's this?" Vi asked.
"The talisman will guide you to a long-lost family member," Link explained.
"And for Caitlyn," he added softly, "it's a mother's deepest confession."
