Chapter 11 - OLD ONES

The night passed by agonizingly slow, she only managed to fall asleep after laying awake for the better part of the night.

She missed him terribly. She had gotten used to his presence, she could always see him with just across from her, but he was around no longer. Well, he was going to come back but still…

Knock! Knock! Knock!

Her heart skipped twenty beats as the banging against the door echoed through the whole room. She rushed to the door, pausing to catch her breath before she threw open the door.

She was destined to be disappointed as the person she was expecting was not there at all, instead it was The Council Of the Old Ones. She was surprised at the honor of the visit, just as she was about ushering them in an individual opened his mouth to speak.

"Good morning to you, Darla. This old one is certain that you're quite surprised at our visit. It has come to our notice that you have a guest in your house, a man to be precise. We were also taken aback because we didn't take you as the type to raise wild men, and shockingly enough after we had waited for you to bring to us so we could scrutinize him, you did not.

That's fine too, we just want to let you know that if you want to continue raising this man you're going to have to bring him to us. You're going to have to provide an explanation for this thoughtless action of yours! The other members of the community would not take us any seriously if we do things this lawlessly!" The old man said with a complacent expression on his face.

She observed all their faces and she saw excitement in all their eyes. Turns out they planned to crucify her today, she thought.

She looked disdainfully at this congregation of senile fools.

Then she laughed. How ridiculous!

They were really putting on airs like they truly were her elders.

Not only did they travel all the way to her house to spout a mouthful of bull crap, they were even trying to intimidate her.

These group of senile idiots really took her for a paper tiger, did they think she would concede, or compromise?

Seeing as she was not responding to them, another Old One took the initiative to continue.

"Darla, you see, the development of this domain is quite tasking and expensive, therefore having unknown people that don't even contribute to it's growth is even more detrimental. Well, we're not asking you to chase away your guest, but you also very well know how precarious it is if we invite in the wrong person. The other domains have been reporting signs of burglary and our domain has been relatively safe, we wouldn't want to be the one inviting our doom.

Besides, this man of yours has been reported to look dangerous. But if he does prove to be unarmed, he has to do his part to be of use to the community, I hope you understand." The man said ending his words in a suggestive tone.

Even though this man sounded like he meant well, like he harboured evil intentions like the rest of them.

Subtly implying she was keeping a thief? If anyone else hears him they'd directly conclude she was also a thief.

She couldn't hold her peace any longer.

"Considering the fact that they specially created a council for the lot of you while also looking at your age, I had genuinely believed you were a group of sages. Now I see how wrong it was to conclude based off of mere hearsay.

In your own idleness, you took the initiative to visit me this early just to let me know you needed more of my money? Have you forgotten how this domain came to be? Or of whom's effort it came to be this developed? How strong the security of this community is, you all know! I won't take the struggle to remind you of the past, but I'll do well to remind you that the only reason this domain is thriving well is all attributed to the efforts of my family! The only reason this domain is not destroyed is because I saved all your puny loves! I singlehandedly ensured that the lives of each and every one in this community was thriving while your council of senile fools were off reaping the fruits of my labour!

And raising men? You have the guts to mention this to me? I know you know very well which one of us here is raising men! You all must have been living quite comfortably this days that you have forgotten some important things!

I'll be magnanimous this time but the next time you find yourselves idle and think that you can come make a show off your authority in front of me, remember that it would not take me too much effort to have you carted off into where you belong. I don't think anyone would mind having the Dead Ones instead of the Old Ones!

Very well know your place!

And if I discover that anyone of you calls 'my man' a wild man, let it be clear that his family would discover just how many 'wild men's he is raising.

Restless senile idiots!"

She was totally enraged!

And they even came to her putting on airs of righteousness.

How stupidly ridiculous!

The Council Of Old Ones had been left astonished at her rebuttal, they probably thought she would have given them some face, but she tore it all apart without regret.

They couldn't even muster words at this point and they knew everything she said, not one of it was a lie.

And she remembered, "And you, Elderly one", she called out sarcastically to another Old One, "you can tell your son that his services are no longer needed."

She knew they placed Shane by her side just to monitor her actions, she allowed it because she thought their actions weren't overboard and she still considered Shane a smart one, but turns out they didn't know their places and now she was not going to tolerate any of their foolishness.

Thinking of how productive she would have been if she hadn't entertained this stupidity this morning, she was further annoyed. She wasted such a good morning.

She glared at them and decided not to waste her words on them any longer, she slammed the door in all their faces.

Walking back into her room, she slumped onto the bed sobbingly as she remembered past events. Those foolish ones just stirred up unpleasant memories she'd buried deep within.

Wolf.

How she wished he was around, present.

She missed being in his comforting hands.

Wolf, I hope he's fine, she thought.
