My fingers trembled as I rested my back against the icy wall and my heart pounding like a war drum in my chest. I still heard her voice shattering, desperate and shattered. The words echoed inside my head like a prophecy that I had no idea how to fulfill.

I pressed my eyes shut, fighting the burn at the back of my eyes away. But tears overwhelmed me, running their path down my face. Hailey had every right to hate me. I hated myself too. But what killed me was in her eyes—not hate, not anger.
It was sorrowful.
And under that, terror.
